How long did it take you to get good at Crucible?

Not gonna lie, I'm getting face rolled. Lucky if I can manage to pull even a .6 or .8 KD. The level of suck that I'm experiencing is astounding. It's all rather depressing really, since I feel like I'm bloody useless. I'm trying to remain positive, but at times I feel (and likely wrongly so) that if I had an exotic primary, it might even the playing field a little. I know this not to be true, since I watch players like My Name is Byf, and he absolutely wrecks people using Hawkmoon, TLW and Thorn with regular legendaries. I know I'm doing (a lot of) things wrong, like not being able to judge how far away a player is to be in shotgun range (invective is my best shotgun right not sadly) and it just seems like I'm completely outgunned when it comes to the exotics I'm running up against (which is more likely due to me not landing consistent headshots). The learning curve certainly seems kind of steep for noob players so far. Any advice would be appreciated. Update 25 JUL: Well, I tried my first Rumble match today, and while it wasn't quite as bad as I thought it was going to be, my performance was still as bad if not worse than I expected heh. Went 7-9, but everyone was getting destroyed by this guy using Thorn and Felwinters Lie (His ending score was around 23-8 or something) I'm trying my best to not get discouraged, trying to remind myself that everyone started somewhere, and this isn't like BF4, a game I'm much more comfortable with. I'll keep plugging away, but I don't think I'll be getting Thorn any time soon hah!

Practice, and quality of practice, really are the most important things for growth. Things like aim and consistency of aim will just come with time. The part that you can work on improving right away is tactics. Play a few games each day, an hour or two or whatever you can manage. When you play a game that actually challenges you, get a recording of it, learn from your mistakes and improve on them. Make each death a lesson, essentially. And when you get too frustrated(it will happen), just put your controller down and go do something else for a while. Edit: I should probably give some more direct tips as well. 1. Pick your fights. If the enemy has the first shot and your health is already low, or if there is multiple enemies and you're alone, just run. Back off to cover, or lead them to a teammate 2. Stat wise, discipline takes first priority, and intellect comes second. In a small gametype like skirmish, maxed discipline means you will have a grenade for nearly every engagement. This is a huge advantage, obviously. 3. Avoid Control. Clash too, but not to such an effect. These playlists are cluster-blam!-s, and it's very easy to get caught up in the enemies momentum; or worse, caught up in your team's momentum. Rumble and Skirmish are the best playlists for both individual skill, and map awareness(including enemy spawns).

play some games where you try only to die as little as possible. Don't even try for offensive kills just move with a group of the randoms on your team and try to die as little as possible only defending yourself. When you get used to not dying as a first rule then you will start to realize you were also getting kills while not dying.

        • In all honesty, you shouldn't worry about being good at a broken game. All you need to be "good" is an exotic hand cannon, and a high-damage, far-reaching shotgun. Even with the incoming "fixes", that will still be all you'll need as far as gear goes.

Took a while to get used to and it was horrendous trying to do the thorn bounty after the fusion nerf. stuck with thorn, red death for quite some time until the first time I went 9/0 and found my beautiful messenger I don't use anything else maybe no land just to screw around. but now I hold a 1.0 on my titan and hunter and 1.2-3 on my warlock Oh and advice don't go running into choke points they are filled with shottys be aware of your surroundings and your mini map and keep your ears open for supers each one has a distinct sound and move with teammates much easier to take some players down but if you hear a blade dancer run

It takes a while to get used to Destiny coming from other shooters. I have been here since beta. And although I'm not a great player I hold my own and have consistently gotten better. Couple tips I can give is avoid 1v 2 situations like the plague. Don't be afraid to avoid gunfights in which you are at a tactical disadvantage. Learn the maps and use your radar. Lastly, slow down. Usually if I am having a bad game its because I am running around like a chicken with its head cut off not paying attention to what is going on around me.

                    • To be honest I always played by myself and sucked big time. Started playing with better people in fireteams saw how they played, played more cautiosly and now I'm just as good if not better in matches than they are. It took time but I can say I'm definately able to consecutively go 1.5 + kd most every game.

                    • It took me a month or two. When I first started, I was terrible and my main goal was to not go negative. I got good by not using exotics until I was already decent. I used Scouts and Snipers primarily. Stayed in the back, and engaged people in battles I knew I could win.

                      • Coming from a halo/cod and fighting game background, it wasn't a terrible transition. I tend to prefer staying mobile so the plethora of movement options in destiny is something I find appealing. I will not consider myself good as long as I know there's room to improve.

                          • Red Death. Get good with Red Death and run with it. Also don't be too aggressive. You don't have to run along like a mad man so leave that to the truly elite. I was a .6 player 4 months ago. Now I'm at 1.02 and moving up every day. The past two months I am a 1.5 player, which would put me in the top 15 pct I would assume. When you are playing and run across the heavy look and see the timer on it so you know when it's going to come up and not wait for the announcement so you can stay close to the area. Do the same with special. All in all RD is great for the health regen after a kill. Play cautious. I'm not saying to camp but don't run wild around the map. Watch your radar and understand it. These are a few tips off of my head that will help your experience in pvp.

                            • Try to avoid the temptation to rely on exotics too much. With Bungie changing everything up every now and then, you don't want to rely to much on a specific gun or gun type only to have it changed later.

                              • Hey man, I feel your pain. The majority of the time I've been on Destiny I have been a terrible PvP player, but I've been adamant about getting better and finally am feeling confident in myself. Couple tips from someone who's been there and is finally a decent player: 1. Always use your radar! If you see red, prepare yourself and face that direction or seek that enemy player out. Rely on your radar. It will guide you. 2. Yeah, I definitely feel like using an exotic primary helps, A LOT. But there are other rly good legendary primary weapons you can use, like Red Hand for example! 3. Remember to reload AFTER EVERY KILL. Can't tell you how many times I was killed because I had to reload my weapon. Reload reload reload. Make sure you have a full clip before your next encounter. 4. Patience. Don't rush an enemy unless you are sure you can take 'em down. This is more useful in small team tactics. Chances are the enemy knows you're coming so make sure you have back up. 5. Don't beat yourself up! Keep playing crucible and you will get better. Hope this helps!

I think at this point I have about 400 hours in PVP, including every Iron Banner except the first one. I had not played PVP since the days of Quake, so I was usually at the bottom 1/3 of the board at the end of a game, .3-.6 usually. Now I'm usually top half, with a k/d .9-1.5, which means average, but of course the many many crappy games I played means my overall average appears lower than that, because that's how statistics work. And I'm 49, and my reflexes are slower than they used to be. Anyway, you really have to practice, learn the maps, and most importantly, learn how people move on the maps and where they are likely to look for an opponent when they are looking for you. It's just experience. And don't stop playing because you aren't doing well. Just learn from your mistakes and don't worry about losing or not being good at it. Have fun in PVP,, keep playing, and you will improve before you know it. Hope that helped. EDIT: Oh, if you don't mind getting your ass kicked but improving faster, play late at night, when the more experienced players come out and play. Watch what they do and how they move, and how they get you. You will improve very fast, but will get killed. A lot.

                                  • I was good at Crucible ever since Beta and still am good now. I took a two week break and my friend invited me for Trials yesterday and still carried when j was still rusty. No matter how much rust I accumulate, I'll still be good. The secret really is have tons shooter experience in your belt. I don't think about what I do in the game, I act purely on instinct. So every time I pull a clutch of 1v3 in Trials my friends are like "How to hell do you do these!?" I just don't know, I just do. Primal instinct.
