-godwinslaw!- = Natzi's You know what I mean. I am sick and tired of grammar -godwinslaw!-. Yes, grammar is important, but to an extent. One does not need perfect grammar in a post on an online forum for a video game. As long as the idea they are trying to convey is understood, they have achieved their goal. Users online that tend to correct one's grammar indicates a lack of rebuttal in an argument. This happens all of the time, you can see it everywhere. Lack of proper English grammar does not indicate lack of intelligence. Here is the discussion I had with one of these grammar -godwinslaw!-: Him:
When the only impression people can get of you comes from the words you put on screen, yes, bad grammar and spelling means your opinion is worthless. That's just the way it is. Soon this generation will complain that it is stupid for doctoral programs require strong writing skills.
Me: Explain why bad grammar and spelling means an opinion is worthless? Where is the correlation? See, look at it this way. You are able to use spelling and grammar. I am also able to use spelling and grammar. now if i type like dis it proves nothing. I am still able to use correct spelling and grammar, I just might choose not to. That doesn't make me any less intelligent. If I have the ability to use correct spelling and grammar, and choose not to, I'm still just as intelligent. It's just a choice. If I use bad grammar, you may think that I'm unintelligent. When really, all I'm doing is not using it because I don't feel like it. I still harness the ability to. As long as the message someone is trying to convey is understood, that's all that matters. Him:
If a five year old tried to convince you of the value of a geopolitical stance in broken English, would you take them seriously? The same principle applies in every day life. If a person is unable to convey an idea in an intelligible and intelligent fashion, there is no reason to take them seriously. If they choose not to, they are being lazy, and are also not worth a second thought.
Me: First off, that's a bad example because I wouldn't take any 5 year old seriously on that topic because they have no idea what geopolitics even is. If the stance one was taking made sense and their idea was agreeable, yes I would take them seriously. If the fellow has English as his second language and isn't good at English grammar, does that all of a sudden make his point/opinion worthless? No. It doesn't. If some very intelligent person from another country is trying to convey an idea that you probably couldn't even understand has trouble with English, that doesn't make him any less intelligent. Lazy? Being lazy doesn't mean you're not intelligent. Being lazy doesn't mean that they aren't worth a second thought. Why would someone take the time to use proper English grammar if the idea they are trying to explain is explainable without it? That just takes more time and effort. Have you ever heard the quote, work smarter not harder? In fact, I could probably argue that being lazy leads to more intelligent creations. The guy that was too lazy to wash his clothes invented to washing machine. The guy that was too lazy to walk invented the automobile, or the bicycle. I'm not arguing that grammar is useless, because it is very important to properly send ideas across to other humans. I'm arguing that it doesn't need to be perfect to illustrate a message. I'm arguing that if one doesn't use proper grammar in a post (in an online forum for a video game), it doesn't make them any less intelligent. Maybe lazy, but also smarter. You can spend your extra minutes spell/grammar checking your post while the other man is already done and the post is understood by everybody. The only reason I'm trying to use proper grammar is because I'm afraid that if I don't, you will call me out and instantly deny my thoughts without reading them first. Him:
I have already stated my position, it is immutable. So effectively you are just arguing for the sake of argument, a futile and foolish pursuit.
Me: I am not arguing for the sake of arguing, I am genuinely trying to talk to you. Please read my post and tell me what's wrong with it? But, nope. This is exactly what people like you do. You either read my post completely, realized you can't argue back because I'm right or you didn't read my post at all. Having an immutable position illustrates an unintelligent man. Not being able to admit when one is wrong shows a thick skull. Being able to change one's opinions shows the ability to grow intelligence. Denying facts when they are laid out in front of you for no reason does the opposite. All in all, the only reason I formatted this nicely and tried to use proper grammar is to keep the grammar -godwinslaw!- from instantly denying my posts without even reading it. In the end of the argument I had with this fellow, he did not even say anything about my reply. He just told me I was arguing for the sake of arguing. He also stated that his opinion won't change. Having an unchanging opinion indicates a lack of growth in intelligence. One must be open and able to admit one's faults to learn more. It seems that the fellow read my reply and realized he had nothing left to refute. Edit: He also muted me which typically (not always) indicates giving up on a topic. Hm.
