My first exotic was Red Death - from a random engram, probably from patrolling. I'd heard the name but really didn't know anything about the weapon. Didn't even like pulse rifles. But... first exotic - so I used it constantly, adapted my play style to accommodate pulse rifles, and got it fully upgraded. Back then I was mainly playing the lighter end-game content, and didn't have multiple characters or nightfall bonuses etc. so this took a while. This was all happening right before Dark Below hit - and when it did, I bought the Red Death upgrade from Xûr and slowly ground through maxing it again. I earned the shit out of that weapon - [b]and it would have been no different if I'd bought it instead of getting it randomly.[/b] How you get weapons doesn't matter - how you use them does. Every famous guitarist in the world has fans who all rush out to buy the same guitar he/she uses. So what? It's just a product - bought, found, stolen, won, or gifted, it's just a thing you acquire. What matters is where it takes you. Some of those fans will go on to be better players, some won't. Some will take up boxing instead. TL;DR - this constant return to questioning 'earned', 'Xûrned', etc. is a Sisyphian exercise in futility. Get gear however, use it your way, end of.

I think the debate is stupid, but query: did you just buy a thunderlord? If so, you probably only got this one because Destiny seems hellbent on giving repeat exotics.

Luck. Luck is also a factor when it comes to buying from xur. You are lucky if rngesus is on your side. Same with "earners". Luck plays a roll if you get a legendary or exotic at the end of a match. Nothing is earned in destiny. Only high scores are earned. And upgrading gear is earned
