So first off I understand the basic premise, people pay those they wish to support. I will also say that I don't watch any streamers, the closest thing I do is watch Planet Destiny videos to learn things about the game. Finally, let me say that I have no qualms with how these streamers make a living, if they can swindle hard earned money from idiots... more power to them!
With the guest appearances on Bungie's reveals though I've come in contact with a few live streamers, such as Gathelion, Triplewreck, and the God awful Professor Broman (my opinion), and decided to tune in during their streams.
For example, while I was watching Gathelion he simply was eating lunch and people were non-stop subscribing and tipping the man. All he did was munch away and say, "thank you "x"! ... WELCOME TO THE RAPTOR PACK!" every time someone gave him money. One guy even gave him $250 tip... For the 30 min. I spent watching his stream, the dude must have made over a few hundred dollars. Some people with actual jobs don't even make that kind of money.
Now I'm 24 years old, so I'm not that old, but I feel so out of place with how people now a days spend money on their entertainment. Has this really became what people value and consider as "entertainment?" I remember watching that episode of South Park about Pewdiepie and not really understanding it, but when I actually was part of the whole phenomenon, the episode makes a whole lot more sense. Why would people in droves, spend their hard earned money on these things? Again, I'm not complaining, good for them being ok with exploiting dumb people and making it lucrative, I'm just trying to understand the motivations behind the phenomenon. Any ideas?

2 RisposteWhy do people go to the movies? Or subscribe to Netflix? Or go out to concerts? Entertainment, plain and simple. You can watch Twitch for free if you want but if you enjoy what you're watching and have five bucks kicking around why not subscribe to the guy or send a tip just to support the stream. As for the people who spend hundreds of dollars or more, that's their money and they and do with it what they please I guess. Not my place to judge their motivations or financial situations. At one point I was subbed to Goth, Broman, and Broman's brother Tearex. Now that Goth and Broman's channels are getting bigger than ever thanks to the Bungie reveals I only sub to Teawrex because I want to support his stream and see it grow also. And he's a good streamer who streams a better mix between PvE and PvP.

2 RisposteThe real question that needs to be asked is why do you care what people spend their money on in the first place? You spend half your post mentioning how you don't care and it doesn't bother you when clearly it does. Otherwise you wouldn't have been compelled to make a post about it. How about other grown ups spend their hard earned cash on what they want and you worry about you? (I don't watch streamers and never have. I'd rather play the game. But I don't care what people spend their money on)
-
I doubt that many of the people donating such large sums are earning at either an average or subsistence level. It's hard to understand when you are at the other side of it, but to some people $250 is a suprisingly throwaway amount of money. When you think in terms of $250 being a "cheap" tailored shirt, or half a days wages, or what you're going to add onto your next consultancy bill just as undefined "expenses" then why not chuck a sum like that the way of a streamer? I'm not in that position myself, but the fact is gaming is an expensive hobby, not all gamers are poor.

1 RispondiSo your saying that your trying to stream and not having droves after droves of people watching and need tips on how to get people to watch? Or have I misread again?
-
21 RispostePeople support things they like, plain and simple. Do you have to buy a certain brand of food or clothing? Why do you support that company? Are you dumb for shopping at a certain store? What about eating out? Do you have to eat out at all? You do those things because you like them and therefore you support them in some form or fashion. I support about 5 streamers because I like them. I pay them for entertainment, like you pay to see a movie, or comedy show. It's pretty simple, really. Is everyone at a concert "dumb" because of how they chose to spend their money on that entertainment? Of course not.

Well if you only tuned in for 30 minutes I can see why you would be confused. Most streamers of Goth and TripleWreck's stature ( by which I mean popular ) stream for 8 - 12 hours a day. It is what they do for a living. In the case of Gothalion, he also makes YouTube videos and does other things like charity streams. He is very involved with his viewers both on stream and irl. He is one person that always supports the community from which he is representing. Goth was a very big part of the BL & BL2 community before switching over to Destiny full time. To get the full feel for why people support him I recommend tuning in for at least an hour or two. Twitch does not pay streamers. Any money that goes to the streamer is given after they have proven to Twitch that they have a concurrent viewership and "quality" content in the form of a $4.99 monthly subscription that is optional to the viewer. This comes with the minimal perk of an in chat emoji that is created by the streamer. Any other perks are purely added by the streamer themselves in the form of a giveaway or play time with them. Now as to the absurd(?) amount of tips that some streamers are given by viewers. Think about it this way: Lots of people, including myself, use Twitch like TV. It is a primary form of entertainment for a lot of people. When someone is giving you quality (objective obviously) entertainment, it just feels like the right thing to do would be to return the favor. In this case it just happens to be monetary favors given to the streamer. Some think that streaming is not a "real job", but I ask what really qualifies as a "real job"? Comedians stand on a stage and tell jokes, yet make a killing every night they sell out a venue. Actors memorize a script and look good in front of a camera for a few hours. Hell, there are people paid to sit and very loudly judge people in a competition (i.e. X-Factor or the like) just because people recognize their faces. My point is, people will give money to things they enjoy.

Pretty sure there is someone who has donated over 4k on triple wrecks stream

Modificato da tacoface1996: 5/7/2015 7:36:43 PMTrue, I don't get why someone would give $1000 dollars to someone for playing a videogame..... Maybe a couple bucks if they're really entertaining, BUT $1000, like c'mon, you could do so much more with that......

Now that I know it makes people mad that these guys get donations, Im going to be sure and give one of them some cash, out of spite. Today. Maybe triplewreck for dealing with that troll..
-
8 RisposteWell, I partly understand. Without their subscribers, these guys couldn't do what they do. The subscribers don't want their favourite streamer to stop streaming, so they continue to subscribe. What I don't understand are the guys that regularly tip $50+. I was on a stream a couple months back and someone donated $1000 to the streamers. That really did blow my mind. If you have $1000 to donate to some dudes on the internet, you have too much spare cash. Give it to a charity or something. Overall, I guess I see nothing wrong with giving some spare change to a channel that you enjoy watching. $5 to subscribe to one channel is nothing, really. They can't do it without their subscribers. It just gets weird when I see big donations being given. I think other places could use your $100 more than a streamer does. You also watched the stream at the 'wrong' time. The people subscribing weren't subbing, due to being entertained by him eating a sandwich. They're probably long term viewers that decided to subscribe to him at a moment that may seem strange to a non-viewer.

2 RisposteModificato da Otter Ruin: 5/7/2015 6:08:04 PMWell, I subscribe to Gothalion, and this is my rationale. I was a follower of his channel for months before finally subscribing. Five dollars a month is not that much of a sacrifice to me. I enjoy his stream for a couple of reasons. One, it helps facilitate a greater sense of community. The raptor pack you so eloquently mocked is a great following. I have met some great people through interactions on his stream. Second, I love the music he plays during his stream and enjoy the banter that ensues from him playing with the community. I usually have his stream on while I'm playing, or when I need a destiny fix and am not able to play. I support him the same way someone who buys a cd instead of illegally downloading music supports the artist. I enjoy the content of his streams. He plays other games, even ones I have no interest in, and I still like being a part of it. I don't really appreciate the broad insinuation that anyone who chooses to spend their money differently than you is an idiot. Sincerely, A 25 year old with disposable income

1 RispondiNever understood this shit myself. With youtube, it's not like a subscriber ACTIVELY parts with their money. If they click a link or ad, it's not going to take $5 out of their wallet directly. But I see people give money away just to watch someone play video games? WTF??? What in the world possesses someone to give money to just WATCH something that's already free? It's like paying for a subscription to pornhub when you watch the videos free anyways.
-
Only stream I catch now and then is Neebs Gaming on Thursday nights and they play random games. I follow their channel because those guys make some really funny animated shows on youtube (BFF's, D&A, etc). I've noticed there's one person that donates $250+ every time. I've wanted to throw a few dollars at them since I enjoy the content they create but I guess some people have way more disposable income that I do.

You should see my counter strike purchase history. People spend money on what they like and there will always be people who think it's weird, stupid or pointless. Buy a $600 pair of headphones and people will say wow what a waste. Buy $200 shoes and people will say the same. Spend hundreds on a game and you'll get the same response.
-
I have donated to less popular streamers before.

Because they're stupid, and they don't understand the value of money. It's still a more sustainable model than people paying Google to show adverts that everyone blocks, though.
-
Especially some of the female streamers. Either that or some of the viewers would rather pay with their pen0r.
-
Modificato da traces8: 5/7/2015 5:47:39 PMI'm officially old because that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Im suppose to pay to watch someone to play a video game I own myself over my computer. I obviously don't understand and in all honesty I have no interest in understanding. Now excuse me I have to go watch Matlock after I finish yell at those kids that are on my lawn.
-
Crazy right? You know what's even crazier? The fact that people were paying $100 to watch an overhyped boxing match. People do with their money what they like. What seems like a waste to me doesn't mean it's a waste to someone else. People like to support the things they like to keep them going. It's really not that hard of a concept to understand.

I know, it makes no sense to me either...
