Ok. So I'm 37 years old and have always been an avid gamer. I am also a married man with a mortgage, car payments and a job. My gaming is a hobby that is well deserved. Perhaps more than the ones who insult adults for gaming and have their games handed to them by mommy and daddy. Here's the thing... My generation is the first to grow up with console gaming so there is no comparison to an older generation. No one told me at a certain age I was supposed to stop liking gaming. The story and subject matter is mature. I'm not playing children's games. So I think that trying to insult an adult for gaming is one of the weakest insults you can drop. It doesn't bother me but I have heard it a few too many times.
The reason I bring this up now is earlier I was in a Vault of Glass raid team with what I thought were mature teens/ young adults. We were fighting Atheon and one of these douche's friends pops in and immediately starts insulting the group and calling us kids. So I said, "Why don't we focus on talking about the raid we're in for now?". The douche starts getting smart so I mention the fact that he came in insulting us and calling us kids when I'm in my 30s. That's when the lame insult comes into play. And then the arguing starts. Douche's friend tells me to shut up so douche can keep going on about how cool he was for hitting level 32 in the first week of the Dark Below. Had I been thinking clearly at the time, I would have called him out on that supposed 32 in first week comment. I know that no one reached that level in the first week.
There is nothing to support the insult that adults shouldn't be gaming. Last I checked, over 50% of adults played games in one form or another. Even if it's on their phones. So to all the kiddies out there who use this insult, it makes no sense. I've just gotten it a few too many times now and had to speak out.
How many of you are adult gamers out there? Have you been insulted for revealing your age? At what age exactly was I supposed to turn my nose up at gaming? I didn't get the memo apparently. How many of you think this is a totally reasonable hobby for adults? Do you ever lower your age to avoid criticism? Why should we feel like we have to just because there are ignorant, immature kids out there who use their parents as an example for the average adult? I know quite a few people who game with their dads. Does that make their dad a loser?
Please feel free to comment on this matter. I really want to hear from the adults out there so I know I'm not crazy. Let's put this ridiculous insult and way of thinking to rest. And if you're a kid and comment on here, it shouldn't be negative since you have no experience in the matter. You will be shamed.
Edit: I'm so glad to see so many people responding! Hopefully this will spread. I've had some great discussions with you people. Thanks and keep it up!
Edit 2: Still going strong! The word is spreading. Thanks so much everyone. So much insightful discussions and comments. Except for the one troll.... But honestly, I expected nothing but comments like his. Thanks community for showing positive support.
Edit 3: I'm so humbled by all of the responses and discussion in here. I didn't expect even 20 comments but, over 500?! This is great. With all of this respectful discussion going on I would like to think someone at Bungie has noticed. I'd like to hear from someone with Bungie. Let us know what inspired them to go into this field, how old they were when they started gaming etc.
I never intended for kids in general to take grief from this forum. If I were to make negative comments about all younger gamers I'd be no better than the kids that insult adults. You friendly young gamers know who you are. I've defended quite a few in here.

2 RisposteHello, I am 51 and play Destiny sounds day one. Hard to find a group of people who will play the game for the fun instead just getting as soon at level 34 as possible. Played with clan members but there was to much bullshit. But there are of course enough young serious players there but they play more with people from there one age. The way they play is a little bit different then how I play. There reactions are faster so I play more on tactics. My son is 16 and plays more with his friends than with a older guy like me. But I think a mixed group is interesting because of the different play style. And by the way, I play computer games sinds the first ping pong game came out on television.
-
I feel you on this one. I had created a clan which i am no linger apart of due to a falling out but, there was this one kid did the same thing you mentioned without the kid comments. Come in amd started talking about how much this team sucked instead of being a positive and helpful portion of the team. Luckily for me im usually leader of my ventures and kicked his little yappy self and blocked him from returning. I joined a new clan entirely full of wonderful people who can talk calmly and play with the perfect amount of game communication and idle chit chat. Im not in my 30's i just turned 24 feb but, i firmly believe that playing games is for everyone. Games should honestly be for those who can personally afford them. When a child is handed things it makes responsibility non-existant. Im no better than most at all but games in most cases relax me and help melt away a long day. Give a sense of adventure i know ill never have and keeps my creative juices flowing. Its helpful to keep up thinking power and helps your mind stay reactive. Personally when my child grows up ill prefer him play outside but, that dont mean daddy wont play some games with my boy. The fact someone could insult someone not only on a video game but, over internet only shows that they do not feel good about who they are. They probably get made fun of hardcore at school and are ridiculed as losers. I dont worry about people online i like playing alone most of the time but me and my 43 year old friend play destiny together often and he is getting really good at it his grimore is even higher thanine now at over 3100 mine is close but i am usually a single character user so grimore means nothing to me. Anyways keep gaming big man its a hell of a activity amd hobby. Happy gaming.

Well I'm 13 and I still play games with my dad. People who take the mick out of others just cause they're "too old to play video games" is ridiculous. If I ever came into a game with you, I would respect you for how long you have been gaming :)
-
Yeah my dad doesn't give a fûck, he loves playing Halo I think if he knew that if he was gonna die tomorrow I'm for sure he would say "Let me kick some ass on BTB before I go." Or something around there haha
-
3 RisposteYour awesome :) I may not be a adult, but I get insulted by young kids quite often too. They tell me that I should get off a "guys game" and go clean the house or something. Well, I deserve to play a game just as much as anyone else. In fact, my parents stopped buying me games years ago. I pay for my own games, Xbox live, and dlcs. These little kids need to shut it down.
-
2 RisposteI'm a teen. And I play destiny with my dad. I don't think it's really possible to grow out of gaming. There's never been an instance where I've thought to myself, "hey, this guy has played video games longer than I have. Time to go make fun of him!". The people that go around saying that adults shouldn't game, are idiots. As long as you don't say I'm too young to play battlefield, I'm not going to complain about you playing destiny.
-
1 RispondiYou had me until edit 3. No grown ass man calls out how many replies like a tween. :D. But agree with all before that. 37 year old gamer for life here.
-
I'm not 37 yet, but I like playing with mature players, especially the 50+ gamers. They are experienced, and don't act like 4 year olds.
-
I know it's irrelevant to the issue but a handful of players did reach 32 in the first week. Those players were either streamers who game for a living or no lives who game because they have nothing better to do but it did happen.
-
Ive been fortunate enough to not have had a run in with anyone insulting me. But I do think about it and sometimes worry about feeling foolish. However, I've come to the realization that there are A LOT of older gamers out there. I play with people even way older. I'm a 28 gamer who is loving destiny and the community. I've actually made a group of friends that I play with through the forums and they ages range from 9 to 34. The 34 year old being the 9 year olds father which I think is even more awesome. The other people in the group are mostly teens to young adults but everyday we join a party together and go do random missions together and its great. What I find most interesting is that it doesn't make you childish for playing. I actually am on my way to being a new father soon and actually own a diner, am trying to build a catering company, and sell specialty sausages to local restaurants. So be assured that it is OK to be a responsible adult and a child at the same time
-
2 RisposteI might only be 14 but i can relate because most fireteams i get into are squealing 2 year olds yelling at me making stupid insults like " your dickless " or go shove a pineapple in your ass just for not going outside that much and using a hezen vengeance and not hoc or gjally. I just wish that this generation of kids wasnt -blam!-ed up with little spoiled rich brats

I'm 43 and started with the Atari 2600 and the TRS-80. I've turned in some these kids for being disrespectful and cursing at me for not being as good as they are. Unfortunately I stay away from PvP on Destiny because of these instances. It's a hobby, not my life. The eyes and reflexes don't work like they used to either. I feel ya brother....wish there was a better way to deal with it!

1 RispondiI respect everyone until they disrespect me or friends of mine

5 RisposteMy parents owned an arcade in the early 80's. I was 7 when I started pumping quarters into video game cabinets. Donkey Kong Junior was my first love. My mother played Defender and kicked ass at it. I was pretty much born into it. Haven't dropped it since. I owned every Nintendo console, then every XBox console. I'm a gamer, always have been, always will be. I'll still be playing in the nursing home at age 65... granted they have high speed internet. I enjoyed this post. And I'd buy you a beer right now if I could.
-
2 RisposteI'm in that boat with you man. I havent had any younger players get smart or insulting on Destiny with me yet. I dont feel like age should matter its a human to human issue. Those who feel like they have to belittle others in a setting like online gaming... pretty sad to have to validate your existence or importance that way. Maybe they werent hugged enough or maybe they havent gotten a proper street style @&& kicking for disrespecting someone. I say, game on. Enjoy yourself bro. Those sad pathetic "gamers" who talk trash, you can do anything to them to get even they are already low enough on the spectrum of losers by trash talking in a game where 90% is team effort. If you want to get a glimpse of real social retardation, play Call Of Duty Black OPs II. Cant even have fun playing that anymore. Be good or be good at it.
-
5 RisposteI love seeing adults play video games! It's a lot better getting stuck in a lobby of nature adults than a lobby full of squeaky little kids. Plus most of the adults I know are a lot better at video games than any little kid I've seen.
-
1 RispondiI am 13 but I like to raid with adults more because most kids are so annoying. They sing and won't stop talking. But they don't talk about the game just random stuff.
-
1 RispondiKeep gaming, man. Im 22 and will most likely play video games until i die of old age while playing "Battlefield 47" or something like that with my playstation 14.

1 Rispondi43 and still rocking like Mr Rock who lives in rockanory

2 RisposteI am 70 and I play games since the Atari. My experience with kids in Destiny has been all positive. One kid now friend asked me my age and when I told him he said: "no u don't !" Lol

2 RisposteI'm only 15, but I would never insult an adult gamer. Ever.
