Ok. So I'm 37 years old and have always been an avid gamer. I am also a married man with a mortgage, car payments and a job. My gaming is a hobby that is well deserved. Perhaps more than the ones who insult adults for gaming and have their games handed to them by mommy and daddy. Here's the thing... My generation is the first to grow up with console gaming so there is no comparison to an older generation. No one told me at a certain age I was supposed to stop liking gaming. The story and subject matter is mature. I'm not playing children's games. So I think that trying to insult an adult for gaming is one of the weakest insults you can drop. It doesn't bother me but I have heard it a few too many times.
The reason I bring this up now is earlier I was in a Vault of Glass raid team with what I thought were mature teens/ young adults. We were fighting Atheon and one of these douche's friends pops in and immediately starts insulting the group and calling us kids. So I said, "Why don't we focus on talking about the raid we're in for now?". The douche starts getting smart so I mention the fact that he came in insulting us and calling us kids when I'm in my 30s. That's when the lame insult comes into play. And then the arguing starts. Douche's friend tells me to shut up so douche can keep going on about how cool he was for hitting level 32 in the first week of the Dark Below. Had I been thinking clearly at the time, I would have called him out on that supposed 32 in first week comment. I know that no one reached that level in the first week.
There is nothing to support the insult that adults shouldn't be gaming. Last I checked, over 50% of adults played games in one form or another. Even if it's on their phones. So to all the kiddies out there who use this insult, it makes no sense. I've just gotten it a few too many times now and had to speak out.
How many of you are adult gamers out there? Have you been insulted for revealing your age? At what age exactly was I supposed to turn my nose up at gaming? I didn't get the memo apparently. How many of you think this is a totally reasonable hobby for adults? Do you ever lower your age to avoid criticism? Why should we feel like we have to just because there are ignorant, immature kids out there who use their parents as an example for the average adult? I know quite a few people who game with their dads. Does that make their dad a loser?
Please feel free to comment on this matter. I really want to hear from the adults out there so I know I'm not crazy. Let's put this ridiculous insult and way of thinking to rest. And if you're a kid and comment on here, it shouldn't be negative since you have no experience in the matter. You will be shamed.
Edit: I'm so glad to see so many people responding! Hopefully this will spread. I've had some great discussions with you people. Thanks and keep it up!
Edit 2: Still going strong! The word is spreading. Thanks so much everyone. So much insightful discussions and comments. Except for the one troll.... But honestly, I expected nothing but comments like his. Thanks community for showing positive support.
Edit 3: I'm so humbled by all of the responses and discussion in here. I didn't expect even 20 comments but, over 500?! This is great. With all of this respectful discussion going on I would like to think someone at Bungie has noticed. I'd like to hear from someone with Bungie. Let us know what inspired them to go into this field, how old they were when they started gaming etc.
I never intended for kids in general to take grief from this forum. If I were to make negative comments about all younger gamers I'd be no better than the kids that insult adults. You friendly young gamers know who you are. I've defended quite a few in here.

3 RisposteHad a kid tell me one time that I sucked in pvp, I'm 40 and he had a crappy lagging connection. I message him and he invites me to his party. When he and the rest of his 13 year old friends finished all their high pitched squealing, I tell him to bring two of his friends over to my fireteam and we will do a rumble match with my two clan mates. After all their screaming about wrecking old people, they got destroyed. They stayed in after the first match, but 2 minutes into the second they all left. About a minute later I get a message calling us cheaters, when we did nothing of the sort. They really had no idea how to play a real one on one match up, and got owned. I didn't use profanity, but we did tea bag each of them every time we killed them just to prove the point that they were nowhere near as good as they thought they were and shouldn't be tea bagging. It just pisses people off.

I'm 43, and most of the people I play with are between 30 and 45, I also have a few friends I play with who are in their 50's and 60's and one who is 72 (he's not very good, but damn, does he try). In my group of around 30 people I play with, 4 (I think) are under 20. Don't play with squeakers until they have proven themselves to be mature.

I'm 27, married with two kids. I played with some college kids the other night. Great time playing POE with them. They threw some jabs at me but out of fun. Ended up playing for four hours. I refuse to play with kids that are not mature. One of my good friends who's retired I play with. We have a great time talking about whatever while we play. I grew up with SNES, Super Nintendo etc. gaming is my hobby and just lets me kick back. I love destiny so I play when I can. Wife lets me and I appreciate that she doesn't grip about it

2 RisposteThis is why I joined LFG sites that allow you to choose the age of fellow players (favorite was the100.io). After getting enough people on my friends list to run raids continuously I have stopped messing with younger gamers and will more often times than not boot them from party. Not saying that I single out younger gamers but if you can't shut up about having a gally since week 1 or how you have run VoG hard infinity times with your mates yet still die on the first round of the confluxes, then you are guaranteed to get booted from my party and your gamer tag perma banned on psn.

4 RisposteI'm 37.and my wife is 35. We both work and we have 3 kids and one grandson. We are both gamers. I remember teabagging when I first started playing these kinds of games. Yesterday I saw kids doing it, and I thought when did this come back in style.

Any specific group of people has a subsection of assholes, or people who take it a step too far. I would know, because I'm pretty sure my voice sounds higher pitched over the mic. So I get a lot of homophobic comments; it just makes me laugh now. So hey, anyone want to Raid with me?

I hope I'm still gaming when I'm past my thirties, otherwise I've wasted a lot of time.

6 RisposteThis forum is full of over-privileged lil brats. The forums have become very toxic for older gamers. Most don't even read or comprehend the topic or post that you apply before insulting you. I'm not saying all are bad but the majority of today's generation are not the sharpest tools in the shed. I avoid most of the underage kids on Destiny by the sound of their squeaky voices on the mic.

I may be only 20 years of age however i plan on gaming my whole life its fun and when done in moderation or with self control causes no serious harm to your body. Few things 'fun' anymore dont degrade your body or mind
-
1 RispondiI honestly think people like this should be called out. I'm 30 I have two kids and a wife and a full time job. I don't have time for that kind of crap. I play to have fun and chill. Good luck out there, man :)

Yeah im only 12 and my dad has been playing ever since it came out
-
11 RisposteThe same happened to me and it really knocked my confidence and decided not to play raids because of this. I was always worried that I was not good enough and would let other raiders down. I, like you, put my feelings on this forum and got fantastic response and now have lots of true friends who I raid with frequently and they are very considerate, kind, helpful and very patient as I am 62 this year. There are a lot of excellent mature guardians out there and I have joined dad's of destiny which is just fantastic. Just enjoy yourself and ignore the immature minority.

3 RisposteAge doesn't have any effect on maturity, I was actually on your side until you embarrassed yourself with the dickish replys although nice way to fit into the "kids today" "get off my lawn" stereotypes
-
Excuse me but I have never insulted adults for gaming or have met anybody else my age that insults adults for gaming. My point is is that why would you address every kid on a gaming forum for insulting adults for gaming if not many of us do insult them.
-
Don't let it bother you. There are plenty of 30 plus playing this game and I even game with 50+ adults. The younger generation doesn't understand the evolution of gaming and that it is about having fun not who has the highest k/d. If your on xboxone add my gt above I'll get you in with some adults

2 RisposteHello, I am 51 and play Destiny sounds day one. Hard to find a group of people who will play the game for the fun instead just getting as soon at level 34 as possible. Played with clan members but there was to much bullshit. But there are of course enough young serious players there but they play more with people from there one age. The way they play is a little bit different then how I play. There reactions are faster so I play more on tactics. My son is 16 and plays more with his friends than with a older guy like me. But I think a mixed group is interesting because of the different play style. And by the way, I play computer games sinds the first ping pong game came out on television.
