Ok. So I'm 37 years old and have always been an avid gamer. I am also a married man with a mortgage, car payments and a job. My gaming is a hobby that is well deserved. Perhaps more than the ones who insult adults for gaming and have their games handed to them by mommy and daddy. Here's the thing... My generation is the first to grow up with console gaming so there is no comparison to an older generation. No one told me at a certain age I was supposed to stop liking gaming. The story and subject matter is mature. I'm not playing children's games. So I think that trying to insult an adult for gaming is one of the weakest insults you can drop. It doesn't bother me but I have heard it a few too many times.
The reason I bring this up now is earlier I was in a Vault of Glass raid team with what I thought were mature teens/ young adults. We were fighting Atheon and one of these douche's friends pops in and immediately starts insulting the group and calling us kids. So I said, "Why don't we focus on talking about the raid we're in for now?". The douche starts getting smart so I mention the fact that he came in insulting us and calling us kids when I'm in my 30s. That's when the lame insult comes into play. And then the arguing starts. Douche's friend tells me to shut up so douche can keep going on about how cool he was for hitting level 32 in the first week of the Dark Below. Had I been thinking clearly at the time, I would have called him out on that supposed 32 in first week comment. I know that no one reached that level in the first week.
There is nothing to support the insult that adults shouldn't be gaming. Last I checked, over 50% of adults played games in one form or another. Even if it's on their phones. So to all the kiddies out there who use this insult, it makes no sense. I've just gotten it a few too many times now and had to speak out.
How many of you are adult gamers out there? Have you been insulted for revealing your age? At what age exactly was I supposed to turn my nose up at gaming? I didn't get the memo apparently. How many of you think this is a totally reasonable hobby for adults? Do you ever lower your age to avoid criticism? Why should we feel like we have to just because there are ignorant, immature kids out there who use their parents as an example for the average adult? I know quite a few people who game with their dads. Does that make their dad a loser?
Please feel free to comment on this matter. I really want to hear from the adults out there so I know I'm not crazy. Let's put this ridiculous insult and way of thinking to rest. And if you're a kid and comment on here, it shouldn't be negative since you have no experience in the matter. You will be shamed.
Edit: I'm so glad to see so many people responding! Hopefully this will spread. I've had some great discussions with you people. Thanks and keep it up!
Edit 2: Still going strong! The word is spreading. Thanks so much everyone. So much insightful discussions and comments. Except for the one troll.... But honestly, I expected nothing but comments like his. Thanks community for showing positive support.
Edit 3: I'm so humbled by all of the responses and discussion in here. I didn't expect even 20 comments but, over 500?! This is great. With all of this respectful discussion going on I would like to think someone at Bungie has noticed. I'd like to hear from someone with Bungie. Let us know what inspired them to go into this field, how old they were when they started gaming etc.
I never intended for kids in general to take grief from this forum. If I were to make negative comments about all younger gamers I'd be no better than the kids that insult adults. You friendly young gamers know who you are. I've defended quite a few in here.

Im 16 and i have respect for everyone until they give me a reason to hate him in your situation i feel bad knowing you had to deal with this

I'm 13 and if I'm going to ever say kid I need to know their voice pitch to tell and most of the people I play with are adults and I don't act like that said douch. What was that so called "lame insult"?

24 RisposteModificato da Busty Bailie: 5/26/2015 3:53:45 PMLook Im 14 but I was taught to respect adults. Im mature. Depending how you are I can adjust my personality to be joky or serious. Im a respected young adult, I make A-B honor roll and my teachers really like me. If I disrespected my teachers or parents, I got disciplined(Which never happened because I would loose my Xbox to) . So now its a habit to respect adults. Kids and teens alike should always be respecting adults, whether stranger or family.

I'm only 18 but I can understand how hard that is to hear. I doubt anyone can blame u for playing games as ur hobby I have been playing games all my life n I don't intend to stop as I get older I like playing with adults they are more mature n helpful even more than a lot of kids my on age so I say keep on ignoring them n play to ur hearts content gaming is meant for everyone to have fun n relax together

I can't stand when things like this happen. I have nothing against kids who want to play a video game, but insulting adults who play is absurd. I'm only 18, so I can't speak for any adults who play Destiny, but these kids who do nothing but play for the enjoyment of enraging those older than them should be reported more often. During raids and crucible, the adults I meet are some of my greatest online friends. They haven't missed the train when it comes to modern gaming. They just ride in the caboose, and that's fine by me.

1 RispondiModificato da LilBlkCloud: 6/13/2015 3:42:44 AMYou and I are the same age. I never tell anyone my age unless it's just the two of us chatting, never in a group. But it shouldn't be that way. If it wasn't for our generation, gaming wouldn't be mainstream now. And a lot of these little shits will be thirty in 10 years, and you and I both know they won't be hanging up their hobby. They're disrespectful little assholes, narcissistic as hell. It's a repugnant generation with some good apples, but altogether quite bad.

I'm 20 so not exactly old but I find I have much more fun playing with older gamers because they always have interesting things to talk About like stuff that's happening in the news or just general issues... I find the younger community Is not really my favourite..

24 RisposteDude you realize that that people who are insulting this post all come from the same clan. I find it hilarious they are so bent out of shape over a post. Whats even funnier is can't stop the rock is bumping his own post countless times just for attention

1 RispondiI agree with you, I tend to play with my old man, I'm 15 and believe I am mature. Nonetheless I couldn't agree more, and it's a shame that these "immature kids" don't know better. How would they? Anyway, I'm glad to see people, especially not teenagers, but older folks like yourself make yourself heard sharing your opinion. Not only kids play games, it's 'bout time people start understanding that. Have a lovely day man! - A fellow Guardian, and a Burning Ranger as long as I have my ghost.

1 RispondiI just don't really like how many adults don't watch their child's tone or how they insult other kids/ adults while their parents don't really care. Remember, it hurts the child in the end for the one who keeps talking trash is going to slip up and insult his boss/anyone else. I am sad to hear how many pre-teens/ teens act like this all the time. :(

1 RispondiI am 15 and I feel that any one any age if able to play video games should take advantage of playing video game as long as you are not purposely bringing others down or making something fun no longer fun as a result of your actions. I also think that people can use video games as a tool of distraction witch can result in the procrastination of more important things. Additionally NO person no matter if they are in their 60's and have fun and are able to make the experience for others better should be able to play video games. Secondly I prefer to play with older more matured people as a result of the immature people that make video games less fun and harder to communicate just because a bunch of noobs are not able to finish something the first time. Take control of your feelings and act accordingly, do the right thing, help out, respect others and the choices others make no matter what age. I believe that you were treated wrongly by a immature young adult and that you should not be treated that way. That goes for any one who has been treated this way. I hope that people would just be respectful, communicate better, treat others well, and be respectful. I play on PS3 at Davisfm95 for those of you that feel the same feel free to add me if I can take you as mature and respectful, -davisfm95

I started readin this but gave up on the 5 sentence

It's not just kids, other adults judge me for playing video games all the time. Screw them. Do whatever makes you happy.
-
I am a firm believer that no matter how high a level of what gear they have; all squeakers are just bad players in general.
-
I'm 14 and I don't care if your old or not. As long as your nice to me and my friends we won't have any problems. You could be 65 and playing games, I don't give a damn.
-
I'm not young, but not that old and bought the game my self after I saved my money for the summer but I find a lot of older gamers who think they are instantly better than you because there older and I get called a lot of things becUse I'm not good at pvp or I mess up or something. Like its fine if you older and play destiny but don't pick on younger people in their older teens and ealry 20s

20 RisposteWhy do you care what an idiot immature kid thinks? Get over it. At least you didn't fall for the bait and drop out so loud mouth could join in your place.
-
15 RisposteAs me being a female gamer I honestly believe that this is nothing compared to the rubbish I go through when playing CoD, or any game that has online features.Though I can relate to you on this subject just ignore the kid. They do have a wonderful mute button! :)
-
56 Risposte"And if you're a kid and comment on here... You will be shamed." Alright, that's also a way of thinking that should 'be put to rest.' Adults are no better than kids. There are the kids in CoD that shout obscenities, and there are the older people who troll kids or call them squeakers because somehow that teaches them a lesson. There are immature people everywhere. There is hardly a correlation between age and maturity. The arbitrarily defined term 'experience' is one way older people tell themselves that they're mature. It gives the illusion of maturity. While I admit I was a dumb kid back in Halo 3 and Reach, I couldn't help but notice the masses of older people insulting kids. MLG-hardcore gamers are the worst offenders.
-
If someone makes up fun of you for playing video games, then they aren't smart at ALL. I play video games all the time (mainly Destiny and Halo) but I also happen to be a pretty decent guitarist, who makes his own lyrics and music and I've only been playing for a good 7 months. You're not a loser if you game :)

30 RisposteSo.... much......reading.......my.....head......hurts. :). Well I'm 24 and I still say fukk the little teens. Keep up the gaming.... best stress reliever out there besides getting laid and high. -_-

Honestly this is my take on this: In the game, practically anything involving real life has nothing to do with the game, and therefore, no respect should be expected simply because of an older age. That being said, should people drag real life into the game, then real-life matters can take play. However, so long as we are in the game, I will judge people based on their experience in THE GAME ONLY. I don't care what you have achieved in your real (and honestly more important life) but we are in a different world while playing, so people are not to be treated or judged by their real-life age or achievements, but rather in-game play time, achievements and experience. As for the assholes who began to insult your real-life matters, that is unnecessary and can be treated with an appropriate counter.

I dont really get the whole "Youre an adult so you have to hate everything that you used to love now" idea. I mean, some things, sure. I dont like teletubbies even though I loved those little bastards (and their vaccume) when I was little. But why cant I like those little foam dart guns any more? Or coloring? I flipping love coloring, dammit. Why am I not allowed to color anymore? Or cartoons? You telling me what I can and cant watch anymore? Spongebob is for everyone! But videogames... A lot of videogames are rated M. Which I think means you gotta be 18 to get them, right? Theres a ton of videogames for adults. Videogames arent just a kiddy toy like those colorful rings you stack up on top eachother. Like saying you cant watch movies any more as an adult.
