Awesome job Obamacare....

Going to be fined nearly $700 and miss out on a massive chunk of my tax return because I don't have health insurance and don't want it. F'ing ridiculous.

    • You could go get a minimal plan... Instead of acting like an illegal immigrant and going to the ER when something serious happens and skipping the bill.

        • Why wouldn't you want insurance? You could be one bad fall from a $100,000 surgery. And thats on the low end.

Prior, the only people who could get coverage had to do so via employer, VA (which is still screwed up), or Social Security, if not, you are screwed if you were not in perfect health. (Even acne could be considered a declinable pre-existing condition.) Even still, coverage was expensive because many healthy people were not putting in money, and those needed treatment went to the ER costing taxpayer money anyway. Now everyone can get care regardless of conditions and expenses, and appointments are much cheaper, but the cost won't go down unless everyone contributes. If only sick people get it, costs would be astronomical which is why there is a mandate to buy healthcare. Even "healthy" people would have no excuse to go to the doctor for checkups since they would be cheaper and possibly save a lot in the long run if something minor turns serious. Is it perfect? Hell no! But lets ignore some of the Republican cry babies refusing to look at it, even if they initially created it. Should it be repealed? You would piss of millions of Americans who can finally get health care, plus repealing it would do literally no good unless you can get an alternative everyone can agree on first. At this point it is much easier to fix it than to replace it. (Fixing something to make it better? Blasphemy! If a house has a broken window, tearing down the entire house sounds like a great idea instead /sarcasm.)

Obamacare is a colossal failure as it currently sits and needs an almost complete rework before it's even close to acceptable. But I'm not gonna sit here and feel sorry about your tax returns when a big reason my premiums are so insane is because of millions of people "not wanting insurance" until they're sitting in a hospital getting treated.

                            • Helpfull hint. When doing your taxes. On turbotax site, you can select all the months where it asks if it wasnt affordable and not have to pay a fine. Done this past 2 years. Its 400 a month for me. Which is affordable, but coverage sucks. So choose to not get it. My employer insurance sucks and is higher. On a side note, my father's insurance on him and my mother went from 70 a week to to over 250 a week and is going up again. That is thru his employer too.

                            • Well that's way cheaper considering you'd be paying 500+ a month just for you. I'm really glad my job offers healthcare. That sucks man. Somewhere in these forums I can see max laughing maniacally at you. That's compassionate liberals for ya! Laughing at others misery. They loove to do that.

It really isn't that bad at all, I think most people just don't fully understand how it all works. You can set up a high deductible plan with a low monthly cost and offset the cost of your premiums with a HSA, which is collected pre tax, so it actually works out to be a tax cut of sorts. If you are a generally healthy person and can refrain from using your HSA; you can just let the HSA grow for life and once your reach 65 it functions just like an IRA. Furthermore once the HSA reaches 2 grand, (mine anyway; some won't have an amount restriction) you can then start investing it and all returns on your investment are tax free.

                                • Just put my info into the 2017 marketplace calculator and this is what I got.
Based on the information you provided, your income is equal to 493% of the poverty level. Financial help through the Health Insurance Marketplace is only available if you make 400% of poverty or less. An estimate of your cost for unsubsidized coverage in 2017 is provided below. To find out your actual amount of financial help and to get coverage, you must go to Healthcare.gov or your state’s Health Insurance Marketplace. Estimated financial help: $0 per month ($0 per year) as a premium tax credit. This covers 0% of the monthly costs. Your cost for a silver plan: $1,288 per month ($15,459 per year) in premiums (which equals 12.88% of your household income). The most you have to pay for a silver plan: No maximum (before accounting for a tobacco surcharge, if applicable) Without financial help, your silver plan would cost: $1,288 per month ($15,459 per year) You may pay more if your insurer charges a higher rate for tobacco use. In most states, insurers can charge a tobacco surcharge of up to 50% of your total premium before the tax credit. The tax credit cannot be applied to the tobacco surcharge.
$1300 a month with a high deductible, seeming totally reasonable.
