Something said by awful people who support other awful people to feel better about how awful they are. Its a way to disregard blame by saying "everyone does it."

  • What does that even mean

  • It means you feel like a shitty person and you're trying to cope by saying everyone's just as shitty instead of trying to change whatever it is about yourself that makes you feel so shitty. Maybe instead of trying to post the philosophy of teenage angst in the Offtopic section of a video game forum you should just try therapy.

  • Actually I feel great. You sure it’s not yourself? Already doing therapy and I’m done with the teenage era of my life, so maybe because you’re the only one here who tried “insulting” me, it might actually be you.

  • No, she’s right. Most of the time saying “there’s no good in the world” is a coping mechanism for people who don’t feel like they’re contributing any good to the world.

  • It’s not a coping mechanism. What your saying…That’s an assumption based on no facts or input given by the OP. Do you know what he’s even referencing? She is only correct partially. People may use it as a coping mechanism but that is not it’s original purpose. The purpose it was given for was revelation of our sinful nature in the Bible. I’ve lied, and you’ve lied and the OP has lied…everyone in the world has lied before, lying is wrong is it not? No one is perfect. Yes people do good things. But the good things we do don’t make the bad things we do

  • This feels kind of offtopic. Not the forum, like offtopic from the discussion. The op isn’t saying “people make mistakes” he’s saying “nobody is righteous”. i.e. Nobody is moral, everyone is bad. Even when someone’s doing something good, it’s just for their own gain. We like to think we’re good people. If for some reason we feel like we’re not, we try to justify it. Sometimes we try to convince ourselves we are good after all, other times we try to say that other people are worse. Saying nobody is righteous, or good, is usually that second thing. But let me emphasize my usage of the words “most of the time” and “usually”. I’m not assuming anything about the op. I’m just pointing out the most common reasons for saying things like “there is no good in the world”.

  • Okay interesting. Let’s look at definitions👀 🙏 The Webster’s 1828 definition. One thing I like about this dictionary is that many definitions including “righteous” was influenced by the Bible’s definition. And the OP is referencing the Bible The first thing it says in the definition is “purity of heart” question let’s turn this into an analogy. I’m in court…I have robbed a taxi driver at gunpoint to get alcohol money. That is wrong. In my belief (and the OPs) every man is born with a sin nature including myself and anyone who is a Christian. Since we have sinned we are held accountable by God (the judge) Now we may do good things. But does that mean we are no longer accountable for our wrong doing? Now I’m in court facing trial and the judge says “what do you have to say for yourself?” And I say “look at all the good I’ve done, I’ve helped people, fed the poor, gone to church, won’t you let me go?” What will the judge say? “Just because you have done good things does not mean you can get away with the bad things you have done” My point: when we do something wrong, that wrong just can’t be righted. We have done something wrong and we are accountable. Everyone has done wrong. Thus they have sin in them according to the Bible. And until we are judged we carry that sin through our entire lives. This is the Bible’s point of view. Which I believe to be true. I’m the Bible though you can be washed of your sin through accepting jèsus Christ as your savior. The OP didn’t say “no one has ever done good” he’s talking about the heart. “Are our hearts clean?”

  • If something is quoted out of context, especially when that quote is old, then one must consider the modern day definitions of things. And on that note; Dictionary.com: 1 Characterized by uprightness or morality 2 Morally right or justifiable To be righteous is to be good. To do something good for the sake of doing good. To say that nothing is righteous is to imply that nobody does anything out of good will alone. There’s always some ulterior motive. Thus, Gobbo’s response is a perfectly acceptable assumption. If you walk into a room, and randomly claim no one is righteous, this is the response you’re going to get. Origins of the quote don’t mean a lot if the definition’s shifted over time. If he was trying to just give some lesson from the bible he should’ve either explained himself more, or gone somewhere where discussing the bible is commonplace. Or, at least a forum where religion isn’t a bannable offense.

  • Is your heart though morally right??? Looking at the Bible’s perspective the heart is desperately wicked as the Bible says.

  • People are complicated. I don’t think any person is wholly good or wholly bad. Morality isn’t the nature of the world, it is a construct of society, and it is just as complicated as the people who made it. The soul isn’t wicked, nor is it good. People aren’t righteous or unrighteous; actions are.

  • Sorry bro I have to disagree. But it’s opinion ya know. I believe in the Bible because it has proven accurate to me, and I’m sure you have reasons for your belief.

No I wasn’t trying to be all cynical. I’m aware of what I can and cannot affect around me, and I’m happy. But I guess I left it open for interpretation so I got what I asked for. Have a nice day!

  • Open interpretation doesn’t mean correct interpretation.

  • True, but I can’t stop people from having opinions. But I will correct their facts any day.

  • Opinions can be corrected just like facts. Because opinions many times rely on facts. an opinion can change. Having an opinion can lead to morally incorrect things. So sometimes attempting to change an opinion is the right thing to do. Does it always work? Definitely not.
