Outriders game first impressions

So putting aside the hour or so I spent trying to get my HUD to show up in game (eventually fixed it but man what a shit show...) I can say with honesty Outriders is very much just another attempt to catch a "Destiny"- like fandom. But I can confirm what we all knew to begin with; this game is absolutely not a "destiny-killer" so stop asking if it is- it's not. Destiny will kill itself. Edit: as Kelly eloquently put below; the game has far more in common with a game like mass effect then Destiny. Frankly the game feels a bit like what Andromeda should have been, if that makes any sense at all. The gameplay is fairly linear, not much open exploration just a wobbly wobbly line that traces through the environment. Lets start with the obvious, frame-rate issues, uninteractable objects and characters that were previously interactable in the Demo... Got to fight some bloody snaggletooth mutant dogs and that felt honestly like a mere annoyance until the big one showed up and proceeded to give me a thrashing. However with the right combination of Devastor Skills- the "Boss" murder-monkey became a piece of cake as well. I'm currently playing at world tier 6 and have noticed some increases in difficulty. The game overall does a pretty good job of making the player feel OP at the sametime as keeping the game challenging. human enemies thus far have presented theonly real challenge thus far due to the variety of tactics they employ. Blood-Monkeys however swarm the player; changing up the pace from cover shooting to run and gun. Playing as a Devastator I have found that cover ain't my jam and I spend most of my time in the open at close range smashing faces with rocks the healing mechanic of my class being close range kills. Found a nifty green sniper rifle and blue assault rifle, but the auto shotguns have to be my favorite, gear drops regularly from encounters, and the loot game has not proven to be too bad either, but I have yet to find anything above the blue "unusual" category... perhaps in time. What I played so far has been good, I'll let you know what happens. Don't click the spoiler unless you actually want a spoiler.
Update: GIANT. SPIDERS. and freaky bird dudes, 🐦 also a boss battle inside- that's right- inside a Volcano with a massive carnivorous Lava worm spider thing, pretty cool, and I unlocked crafting. Also received a reward rifle that fires explosive rounds and inflicts weakness on enemies
Not sure why people called a 3rd person looter shooter with no live service plan a destiny killer. It's going to last as long as borderlands 3 did probably.

    • I’m enjoying the game so far. I like how you can swap mods on other gear and even raise the rarity of them from green to blue to purple so you can keep a gear piece you like relevant. And the rarity of Legendary gear is what the rarity of D2 vanilla exotics should have been. Very hard to get, which adds to the mystery and excitement. Almost all of the side quests are pretty much the same, though. Go in, shoot enemies, take cover, fight an Altered or two as bosses, then realize your entire quest was for nothing or it made things worse. Though the bosses are really cool. I like how the Altered have unique abilities, which makes them feel like a major threat. And the giant enemy spider is definitely my favorite boss so far. Class customization is neat, too. As a Technomancer, I want to upgrade my healing and cryo turret baby. Luckily, there’s a skill tree just for that. I enjoy sending in my turrets to freeze enemies and then sniping them from afar or unloading on bullet sponges with my Tool of Destruction. Story is generic, but I do like the characters and backstories to them, even if they aren’t all that deep or complex. Knowing how these people lived keeps my interest. Though the story really tries to be overly edgy at times, with the constant spouting of the f-word, the ending of quests being dark every single time and even the exposition at the beginning cursing. So far, 8/10 for me.

I like the way the gameplay feels but it’s a cover shooter that tells you to play aggressively. I feel like those are opposing things. I feel like I can’t play the way I want to, which is more calculated and careful as opposed to running around being all dodgy and aggressive. The game also desperately needs matchmaking per mission because while you can play solo, it’s clearly not meant for it and boss fights solo are arduous trial and error things that quickly becoming more annoying than fun. I’d rather just not play than replay the same thing a dozen times trying to beat it. I don’t enjoy that. I just want a fun universe to run around and experience. I don’t care about that kind of challenge.

        • It’s a pretty sweet game. I’m liking it more than I like cyber punk. Never thought I’d say that but man cyber punk was a pretty big disappointment. It’s not that cyber punk sucks but it’s nothing like what I thought it would be especially on ps4. Game looks like total crap on ps4 and runs horribly still.

        • Everything I'm hearing about it has been really good. People say it's a lot of fun. But they don't see themselves playing the game much after a month and the servers are bad right now. If they can update the game monthly with content and if they add a pvp element to the game, like capture the flag with some loot. It has more potential. Bungie has killed destiny. People that still play the game just don't have a life and don't know what else to do with it or what to play. But the game has been terrible for years. A lot of us, myself included stuck around just cause we didn't know what else to do or play. More stuff comes out each year and each time more players drop off from this one. The forums are still more entertaining than the game ever was. D1 was bungies prime. D2 was like a bad drug addiction. Some kicked it, others still need their fix. But most of the player base today are new players that are current junkies.

          • There's ups and downs, but the downs are pretty severe. Like... there's a solid foundation for a decent game here, but I don't see Outriders as something you'd WANT to invest a ton of time into in the long term. The story is also rather blah. I think the game will have its devoted fans, but it's not for everyone.

            • The game is really fun, it has stuff that I've been wanting destiny to have. (Like dismantling multiple stuff at the same time). Though, I wish we could jump or ledge grab

              • I played the demo. It looked interesting to me but I'm cautious about pre-ordering these days. I'll pick it up eventually, after issues are dealt with.
Or I'll get it on sale or used disk.
• I just played it. Best way to describe the plot would be ‘if Borderlands bit a big chunk out of Mass Effect Andromeda’s story’. Also, the faces some characters make and their screams are so bad, it’s hilarious.
