tl;dr: exotic armor can change its inherent element association with an elemental mod.
The community seems to want a change in the exotic armor elements. At the extreme that exotic armor is affinity free. That suggestion will likely not happen as that would be an excessive mod screen while looking for the mod one wishes to socket. It’s like trying to find one item in a maxed out vault of 500 items.
I’d suggest that exotic armor still drops with a random affinity but at the cost of one of the mod slots you could change the affinity to something else. It adds a bit of a cost to making the exotic more universal so it’s not a one and done drop situation.
Example:
An arc exotic armor piece would have its three mod slots. One for abilities and two to slot the secondary mods for guns etc.
At the cost of one of the secondary slots you could change the affinity to void but that limits you to only one void gun mod. If you leave the armor to it’s randomly rolled natural affinity then you have the two gun mod slots to use freely as you wish that compliment that affinity.
Hopefully Bungie would see this as a a way to make armor more flexible while not removing all reason to chase after exotics after acquired the first time.
