It is absolutely absurd that we STILL can't choose the game mode in Crucible.
Absurd and unacceptable. This is a AAA game, made by pioneers of online gaming, in 2018. Having a choice was possible in D1 but isn't now? Huh?
Above and beyond that, a huge part of why people depart matches early is the lack of choice. As soon as Shaxx says "Countdown," I know that at least one person is going to leave the match immediately.
There really aren't that many game types in Destiny. There's no reason we can't choose the mode we want. If a certain mode ends up with no one in the queue, it will be because it was bad game mode. (Yay for democracy!)
Edit: Some people are making the seemingly logical point that Bungie won't introduce choice into Crucible because forcing people into a single queue artificially inflates the number of players in said queue. While this is true relative to the game's [i]current[/i] player population, lack of choice is part of the reason that a lot of D1 players left the game and something that will turn off new players. Bungie shouldn't be throwing in the towel and focusing only on [i]manipulating[/i] the current PvP population- they should focus on [i]growing[/i] the current PvP population.

Bungie painted themselves into a corner with a lot of decisions, this being one of them. A ton of guardians stopped playing because they didn't like the original D2 crucible design, including the asinine removal of game mode choice... ...and as a result, the player population is no longer high enough for Bungie to put game mode choice in D2. Their shortsighted eff up is the very reason they can't fix their shortsighted eff up.

So control and clash are the only two game modes in QP that I get, I am shooting people and from time to time I am capturing a flag. Big whoop, nobody wants to play Supremacy, and you can choose Rumble. Breakthrough is garbage imo and not as fun as it was meant to be, but a creative game mode.

1 ReplyIt was a nice feature in D1, but I understand why they did this. It artificially boosts the number of players in the playlists by bottlenecking everyone into only a few choices. Shhitty tactic, but not surprised considering how much of a joke PvP is. I have no idea WHY Bungie can't model the success of the Halo franchise for PvP. I miss the "Headshot Only" game mode (forgot the actual name) and pre-selected load outs.

Destiny 1 mode choice and matchmaking felt infinitely better. Both connection and skill were considered. Matches felt exciting and fair. Also. There was pure connection trials for the hardcore. Something for everyone. Why can’t we have all that in D2?

I mean I can explain to you why we can't do that and it would be the same reason as to why it's not going to change, but it's also not going to change how you feel about it. Oh well.

3 RepliesIt's not that they can't do it. It's what it leads to. Think about it. What would happen if you could choose game mode? The game lobby would be splintered into multiple sections, leading to even worse matchmaking and even longer wait times. Hugely popular games can offer morer choices simply because they have the population to back it up.

This IS Bungie. Stupid decisions are easy and immediate. It just took them a little longer to get up to "absolutely absurd". Don't worry, they passed absurd and have gone from rediculous to sublime. In fact, Bungie has gone plaid.

Unfortunately this company makes the game for themselves (which many hardly play). They have the bewildering philosophy of designing not just the game but how we play, experience it. Until they drop this 'we want you to play the game our way' philosophy we are going to continue to have these frustrations. They literally have become one of the worst developers in the industry, no other company does this.
