How Luke Smith Destroyed Destiny

On November 30th, 2017, Luke Smith and Chris Barrett (Game director and Project Lead for Destiny 2 respectively) released a public statement entitled, “The State of Destiny 2” amid the overwhelming amount of criticism and frustration from both the media and players surrounding their precious franchise since its launch. If you read their statement and found yourself unimpressed by it, you’re not alone. In fact, its likely that if you play the game (or used to), found yourself further enraged by their response. How did things go so wrong so quickly? How is it that Bungie still doesn’t know what the hell they’re doing after four plus years of developing and publishing Destiny? Well, for one, we need to scale down Bungie’s identity as a whole and focus solely on the men responsible for the major decisions regarding the game up until this point: Luke Smith, Chris Barrett and CEO of Bungie, Pete Parsons. The entire team of incredible developers at Bungie cannot be held accountable for doing their jobs while under the direction of these three men...

Looks to me like the problem is the CEO, Pete Parsons. Because any sane CEO would have fired the other two for driving the franchise into the ground... But seems to me that he's very happy with what they've accomplished... As I see now with small changes they want to improve, like a shader collection, raid loot, these are completely irrelevant and it seems what they refuse to touch is the core of the problem, the lack of the RPG... That's something they don't wanna touch. It's almost as if somebody bribed them to destroy the franchise. Like "that thing was too fun, shut that thing down. Then make D3 and steal their money again". If somebody doesn't take over Bungie right now and turn it to the right direction, it's gonna be the end of it, because I don't know which community is gonna buy anything from them again. The console community is happy with D1 and the PC community was conned...

As long as Luke is lead, this game will stay dead and the player base will continue to drop off. I have no idea on WTH this company was doing letting a man that has never had any experience being a lead run a sequel. This is one of the dumbest things this company has done yet. I say yet because they keep making themselves look foolish every single day that goes by. Luke had no business being lead. He should of been left creating raids and the game would of been a hell of a lot better off.. But when you got the 3 Stooges praising each other, what can you do but laugh at them for killing this game. Yeah yeah little Bungie fans, it's not dead yet in player base but as far as a game being a (quality type of game.) They are an embarrassment and think they can lie their way out of this one that the player base is laughing at them... Along with IGN, Game stop and other companies for being caught not just once, but twice lying to their player base and it's not even close to being over yet.
LoL
OP is correct. It's time to call for some of these tools' heads. Luke Smith is a prime example. Chances are he is at least one person behind removing things from D2 that were in D1. You planning on selling us back private matches in a DLC? Maybe the second DLC will revert PvP to 3v3 and 6v6 and bring back raid and strike specific loot for a mere $30? The third and final DLC might even give us half of the rest of the things we're asking for. Are you bringing back Thorn? Or did you decide against it because you are too inept to remove the final round bug? How stupid do you think your customers are? You deserve everything that is happening right now and more. Gamers, we need to remember these people's names. It's not enough to not buy another Bungie game. If you see these names connected to another company in the future, don't give that company a single red cent.

See, If you don't listen to your own game community this will quickly kill your own game, besides destiny 2 seems very strict. And I know 1 time shaders sucks, good thing I didn't get this piece of shit called Destiny 2. I recommend nobody to buy this shit once Destiny 2 population reaches 0 Luke Smith will realize what shit he has created and might as well forget the 10 year plan.

                • But he did good for destiny 2 from the shareholders pov. He used as little resources as possible and absolute minimal effort for everything. Maximizing profits for all as it did sell well to begin with. Only problem now is the dlcs probably wont sell well as everyone knows destiny 2 is a laughing stock.

Baring crucible, I think vanilla D2 is in many ways far better than vanilla D1 ever was. The problem is that D2 didn’t build upon D1Y3 - or more accurately, didn’t build upon the state of the game following D1Y2

                    • Well. Honestly the main problem is. They tried to make a game that would be too many things to too many types of people. Their "three types of gamers" concept is provably just flat out bullshit. There are as many types of gamers as there are types of game on the market. There are a lot of people who play puzzle games who could never excel at a shooter, shooter games that could never excel at puzzle games, button mashers, platformers, tournament style games like Mortal Wombat and Khajiit Fighter, there are button mashers, explorers, "break your controller games" like dark souls... and what constitutes different "qualities" of gamer are vastly different on each. In the case of Destiny. They tried to appeal not just to "casual/core/fanatic" gamers, they tried to appeal to pvp fanatics, exploration gamers, think things like fallout or elder scrolls. They tried to appeal to casuals with ease of acccess and the sweaty bastards who aren't having fun unless their boobs are in a vice, they tried to get in platforms they literally tried to drag bits and pieces of the entire gaming industry into their game.... And as a result, they failed spectacularly at ALL of it. Here's one place to start. There are people who won't agree. But as a rule of thumb, any game that has pvp, needs to be pvp almost exclusively. If the game is not entirely focused on PVP combat, then pvp and PVE physics need to have a clear wall dividing the physics of each arena. I can easily imagine a PVP only destiny based around a hero shooter like Overwatch, where you play characters like Zavala, Ikora, Cayde, Osiris, Yor, Toland, Eris all characters balanced with specific combat skills and styles. Call it faction wars or something. Then you could have a game based in the same universe that is only PVE. Totally dividing PVE and PVP is a big step in the right direction for what Bungle wanted to do with this game, but as long as crucible is what they imagine to be their primary draw, the game is going to fail eventually. Personally. I've always been a supporter that Crucible should just operate off the core physics of each weapon. This much impact, this much stability, this much range, so on. The "intrinsic" perk is the only perk that effects anything, so, high impact gives you your HCR, but is balanced by being relatively slow firing and hard to control. Light weight makes you more mobile. So on. Things like ordinance and hcr and armor piercing just do their thing for PVE, they aren't factored into PVP at all.. And just like that, the whole situation is fixed. Everything is balanced at last, and it ceases to matter if perks are balanced because you're only using them to plow through adds in strikes and patrols and so on. And here's a big thing. For PVE?... Nothing, should make attempts to be balanced. It's a gun. It kills things. If guns were about balance, we'd still be using muzzle loading flint lock pistols.

                          • Let me present a counter argument. Don't hate me. I feel like we're angry and ignoring the good decisions by looking at the situation as half glass empty instead of half glass full. I've been a day1 player and spent over 4000hrs in D1, so I know what I'm talking about. As a veteran, I understand that people wanted more of D1, however, what we're looking at is Destiny2. So the philosophy and design decisions are different. I guess we have to adapt. If you remember, Bungie did polling to check what fans wanted from D2. 50% wanted more of D1 and 50% voted for absolutely fresh start and a new game. So, either way, half the community would have been pissed anyway. Lets give credit where it's due - D2 is a polished and streamlined game. Story and visuals recieved an upgrade. Raid design (lavish gold theme) is new and we haven't had something like underbelly in the last 4 raids. The stupid grind fast is gone and I regretted and hated myself playing some content over and over again. Even after grinding for thousands of hours, I still didn't get the God role Eyesluna I was grinding for - exactly why random roles are bad. I feel PvP is better than it used to be. Remember the terrible lag and the madness? It reduced drastically. Slow TTK is good bcz if I wanted fast run and gun style games, I would be playing other fps games (but slow ttk brought team shooting which is horrendous, I guess it's double edged sword) and skilless shotgun kills are thankfully gone. Gameplay is primary weapon focused, so needs some skill atleast. Meta is little diverse. Good decision on moving shotgun and snipers to heavy/power slot. I agree that we don't feel powerful enough so it needs to be addressed (super cool down timer adjustments? - I guess they are indirectly addressing this through Masterworks) Some decisions were definitely bad.. Token/reward system, team shooting meta, slower pvp, no light level increase nor special perk weapons from Prestige raid (so no incentive to play Prestige), removal of so many pvp modes (why? where's fan fav mayhem) and private matches etc. We had amazing looking gear by the end of Age of Triumph with ornaments. How did we come from there to here? Overall, I think Luke Smith and co. did a decent job. Yes, some decisions were bad and controversial but doesnt warrant changing the leadership. Destiny1 wasn't perfect. I guess we're giving too much value to nostalgia. People complained day and night on forums and reddit about D1 issues and imbalanced pvp throughout its span. Also, we had a phase like this during D1 too. Dry content, millions left the game and a pissed off community (I guess before or after crota Dlc), but we all know how it turned out. So, given feedback, I'm hopeful that Bungie can make a come back again.

                            • The only way to instigate change is to hit their wallets...STOP buying their product. As long as they're making money they won't change their business model. It's basic economics, supply and demand. If you want to get the attention of their bosses in order to cause a change of command you'll have to cause a noticable change in their bottom line because that's all Activision execs are concerned with. When the little line on the spread sheet takes a nose dive then they'll notice because that's all they pay attention to is data. They could give two sh*ts about the feedback forum much less actually read it.

Anyone who wishes harm or dismay on someone because they lack the brain capacity to understand the chain of command should go join Isis with their anti-humanitarian attitude in hopes that you get blown the -blam!- up for being a stupid -blam!-.

                                        • They created a weaker, watered down version of the original that made 50% more at launch across all platforms. Digest that. D2 made 50% more at launch than D1 did. Luke Smith, Barrett & Parsons we’re all given raises and performance bonus’ from Activision as Destiny joined the Activision $1Billion dollar club. D2 is shit from a player perspective but the bottom line is that it made money. Get your head around the fact that player enjoyment is secondary when companies make games. Bungie is in it for the payoff. Bungie is not about creating innovative genre leading games. Once you come to terms with this find another game to play.

All the changes we're complaining about were done intentionally to slow player progression. They had meetings about this. Managers signed off of the changes. There would have been daily stand-up and scrum meetings discussing how far along they were in accomplishing these objectives. We, as a fanbase, need to understand that Bungie knew exactly what they were doing when they did these things.
