Edit: thanks for all the replies and insight into the fallen. Thanks to XxxM4ast3rkill3rx for referring me to myelin games youtube channel. It's been very eye opening about all the lore behind destiny. I've started hunting for the ghosts/SIVA clusters so I can fill out the lore and start reading everything all over again.
So I was at the Reef, studying Variks (he's my all time favorite character since The Fallen are my favorite faction) and he said something that got me thinking: what if The Fallen are actually not bad guys, but potential allies?
This is what Variks said: "The Great Machine. It is mine too, Guardian"
The "Great Machine" that Variks is referring to is The Traveler. Now, we know that The Fallen have attempted to "attack" the city multiple times, the most famous battle is The Battle of Twilight Gap, where all the houses united against the city. What if The Fallen weren't actually trying to overtake the city, but seeking the protection of The Traveler? Now, it is known that certain Fallen like the Captains view humanity as inferior, but perhaps some of the others may feel otherwise.
Another thing that Variks said is also intriguing: "Do you think the Great Machine has noticed what we did? Will it speak to me again? Tell me where the great Eliksni have gone?"
I wonder what he means by this. However, he does seem to have a quote that potentially contradicts this whole theory, depending on how you interpret it:
"One day soon I'll tell you the story of how our world ended. I'll tell you the story of the Great Machine."
Could possibly mean: "Well were once a proud race and then The Traveler came and -blam!-ed us"
Or it could be interpreted as: "We were once a proud and noble race, we discovered The Traveler and came unto our own golden age. Until The Darkness came and destroyed our homeworld."
The second interpretation falls in line with some of his other quotes, which would support this theory. However, the most likely interpretation is the first one.
I know I'm probably grasping at straws and just to clarify, I haven't fully unlocked all the fallen related grimoire cards yet (haven't done WOTM yet), so this is just something I thought about based on a couple of quotes.
Let's discuss.

1 ReplyEdited by Haffoc: 4/21/2017 7:50:38 AMThe fallen attack the city because they want the Traveller back. Some, at least, think we stole The Traveller/Great Machine. Skolas tells us
Always remember that we came to this star in hope. And remember that we were denied! Remember the City of the Death of Children, the City That Docks, which claimed for itself the Great Machine that might have saved us.
It's unlikely that many of the fallen would ally with us, Skolas goes on to say
Remember the City of the Death of Children, the City That Docks, which claimed for itself the Great Machine that might have saved us. Remember the City that even now sends its ghouls to murder our Primes, starve our ether, and leave our young to die gasping. Curse that City and its name. The curse is just.
Variks also gives us the following
Why do the Guardians get the Great Machine's blessing, was it like that before the Whirlwind, were there Fallen heroes crowned in Ghosts who strode the battlefield fearless and full of Light?
So it is clear that the Traveller gave the fallen a golden age similar to ours. When the whirlwind happened chelchis, kell of stone, stood before the maw to buy the fallen time to escape. He is quoted as saying "where is the great machine? Where is the great machine?". This was possibly a rhetorical question the way some people call out to God in times of need.

Everyone pretty much figured out like months ago that the great machine helped out the eliksni like they did with us, but the hive attacked the eliksni and the traveler was forced to flee, we know this from numerous sources such as grimoire and weapons like the Doom of Chelchis.

Will tell you story of how Great Eliksni fell, one day soon, Guardian...

1 ReplyIt's the second one according to myelin games

I recall having a discussion with someone and they said that the traveler was originally the fallen and they wished to have it back to protect them from the darkness. So with all of the quotes and theory you have here it would most likely be the second interpretation. That they were a proud and noble race, the traveler came to protect them and gave them there golden age, but then the darkness came and destroyed it all.

The fallen have downgraded to savages and Pirates and none of them are sane, and those in power go hungry for it. They were trying to take The traveler back from us but we destroyed all of their leadership and they don't understand what to do and now the only want to survive and wait till the next leader gets cut down. And the splicers see themselves as machine gods so they do not need the traveler anymore sooooooooooooooo..... pretty poop allies

6 RepliesYou ready for an unnecessarily long post about the history of the Fallen, just for you (because I got bored)? The Fallen had the Traveler before we did, they had their Golden Age, and then the Darkness came. The Eliksni version of the Collapse is the Whirlwind. It's said in the "Doom of Chelchis" Scout rifle that Chelchis, Kell of House Stone, stood against the "Maw". It's theorized that the Maw is Oryx, as Oryx and the Hive chance the Traveler (especially Oryx, as it caused the Zyzygy (or god wave) to destroy what small piece of their long-lost home on Fundament). The Traveler arrives on Mars, and Ares One is sent to Mars, as seen in the very first cutscene. Humanity's Golden Age occurs, human lifespan tripled, Mercury became a garden world yada yada yada. The Darkness comes, the Collapse happens, now we're in the Destiny we play in-game just further in time. The Traveler goes to wherever (I think near the fertile crescent) and the Titans of the Firebreak(?) Order build the walls to protect the City against the Fallen, whom I think have just arrived in the system searching for the Traveler. The House of Devils attacks all six sides of the City's walls trying to reclaim the Traveler, and four orders of Titans are commanded to hold the line; not one order broke. This was the Battle of Six Fronts, and also Saint-14's crusade against the Fallen. Some things may have happened in between, im not sure, but then Twilight Gap happens, where all of the Fallen houses (except House of Wolves, who was intercepted by the Queen on Ceres resulting in the Reef Wars) attack the City again, trying again. (By now, I've forgotten why I am writing this but oh well). Then Ghost revives the Guardian some time later, we single-handedly destroy 3 Houses (Devil: we killed the Archon and Sepiks Prime, Winter: we killed their Kell and an Archon that was stolen, Servitor presumed to be destroyed, Wolf: all who followed Skolas and Skolas's minors like Peekis), and the surviving Devils finally find what they've been looking for; SIVA. The Devil Splicers use SIVA as a new "god" of sorts, as the Fallen use Machines as gods (evident in Servitors and how they call the Traveler "the Great Machine"), and the Guardian teams up with Lord Saladin, Shiro-4, and Tyra Karn to destroy SIVA, blow up the Replication chamber, and eliminate Aksis in the Perfection Chamber. By now, it's almost too late to be allied with the Fallen, but, as evident in one of the new AoT cards, Prince Uldren is said to have somehow made a truce with the Kell of Kings, and we only have small glimpses into their power.

Uh no, the majority of the fallen are pirate scum who hate us because they think we stole the traveler, until the events of d2, the fallen and hive were the only enemy races to straight up go to earth and kill innocents The ones that don't hate us are in the minority, big time, I think variks is the only one who doesn't hate us, and the fallen that agree to work with him are simply agreeing to not attack us, not changing their minds and coming to their senses about what really happened with the traveler

3 RepliesAlready confirmed lore that the Traveler visited the Eliksni world and made them strong like it did with us, but when the Darkness came (as far as we can tell it was Oryx and his brood) the Traveler fled as it always did and the Eliksni were destroyed and reduced to the Fallen When the Fallen came to our system they were upset that the Traveler had paired with another species and they tried to take it back by force, believing that we had stolen it from them. The Fallen actually love the Light and despise the Darkness, but in their misguided attempts to live under the Light once again they have made themselves our enemies are now accidentally helping the Darkness destroy the Light They could be our allies if we could only make them realize that we can live together under the Light and forget all the horrible things both humanity and the Fallen have done to each other

3 RepliesWow! Something actually got you thinking? Your parents must be proud!

1 ReplyWell whenever I do the Taniks strike variks says that I'm challenged.
-
Yes that is what the fallen are attacking us for. They want to eliminate us so the traveler can support them again
-
The fallen were originally how we are, followers of the traveler who's technology and lives were enhanced by its power. now the fallen followed the traveler because of how it left them, so he says it's his machine too he means in the past
-
Well that's why they're called fallen.
-
1 ReplyThe whirlwind was the event that destroyed the Eliksni, which was some kind of event that caused the traveller to leave them. Some claim this was their version of the collapse with the darkness arriving but the way it's positioned seems more like their own actions caused the traveller to lose faith in them.

I like it when purrs at you

It's in the book of sorrows

8 RepliesVariks is also my favorite character, and the Eliksni are my favorite faction as well

Is this post really old? If not, this has been all but confirmed for a very long time (except for the not attacking the City part, as they most certainly did, but just to take the Traveller back).

10 RepliesIf i remember correctly the traveler first helped the fallen and then abandoned them
