What Do You Do?
Been a while since we've had one of these threads and I see a lot of new faces. So, what do you do for work? If you're a student, what do you plan on being when you graduate?
Bonus points for posting something interesting about your job or an entertaining story from work.

1 ReplyAlright so here's the deal, I'm 20 and I have no idea what I want to do. I know it should be something I like, but as weird as it may sound, I just don't know what that is exactly. I just wanted to ask anyone it would concern, around what age do you feel you should have your career figured out? I feel like i should have it sorted by now but that's not the case and its been seriously stressing me out. Any answer providing any sort of help would put my mind at ease and be greatly appreciated.

1 ReplyMy current major is criminal justice. I plan on going into forensic work, perhaps csi. I'm open to many options looking forward. I also am taking computer science classes alongside my criminal justice classes. I wouldn't mind going into a programming field, gotta love technology.

12 RepliesCurrently laid off from the job die to health reasons but I can start right again as soon that's solved. Nurse in an elderly home. Specifically: Taking care of the ones who are in the final stages of Alzheimer. Its a tough job and I've seen many colleagues come and go because the job was too hard mentally and physically. Can't blame them. The job is hard. I personally love it and adore the "patients". The love and friendship you get from them is why I love it so much but it can be heartbreaking at the same time. You can't help but grow a certain bond with some of them and when they die one, it really tears you apart. And that, for me, is the hardest part about it.

3 RepliesI'm an Industrial Hygienist. I evaluate occupational disease exposures at various workplaces. Think of all those mesothelioma commercials. Something interesting about my work is the variety of the places I see and things I evaluate. For example this week: Monday-Noise survey at a cheese manufacturer, Tuesday-Metal fume and paint vapor survey at a metal fabrication facility, Wednesday-Noise, carbon monoxide, particulate, and isocyanate vapor/skin contact survey at a vehicle seat manufacturer (think John Deere and Harley Davidson seats), two office days. It's nice to travel and see American Manufacturing first hand. I've seen things I'd have never expected to see in my life. That new Disney Avatar theme park? I saw all of that being made and now they are working on Star Wars.

Doing a double degree; Bchelor of Commerce (unknown major, as of yet), and Bachelor of Science (major in electronics). It's only week 2 and I'm already bored out of my damn mind. My 3D printer arrived a few days ago though, so building and tuning that has helped with the boredom. In all honesty, university is a total waste of time for me. I was making $1500 USD per month with minimal time investment (often less than 5 hours per week, pretty good for a high school student living in a foreign country), and thoroughly enjoying myself while I was at it, when I lived in Tokyo. And my income would only grow from there if I had stayed. My business would have evolved and I would've been able to deal in much higher volumes, especially after taking on an employee or two.

1 ReplyProbably go into the navy learn to weld then once I get out go to graphic design school, get a job on a oil rig welding and do graphic design on the side, then save enough money to race in the Dakar, mint, Baja 1000 and all those kinds of races and hopefully make a living off racing eventually
