A Defender's Guide to the Crucible

You've played hours of crucible on your titan, jug shotgunning like the meta incarnate, FoH on one person. You've even tried sunbreaker for a couple games. But if you really want to have a good time, the defender is the best option. Now, if you want the most out of a defender in crucible, it's gonna depend on how you want to play. Believe it or not, you can play an aggressive defender, just as much as a defensive one. The exotics I recommend that are defender specific are No Back Up Plans or Glasshouse (Offensive ONLY). Saint-14 is an okay option, but most crucible players worth anything will still see you. The only time I've had use of it was when I put it into places where once you start going that way, you can't stop yourself, aka in front of portals, down holes, etc. Anyhow, the idea for aggressive bubble play is that your super basically overpowers you and your team and buffs them in some way. Whether it makes you tougher or hit harder, aggressive play likely won't benefit from armor. Unless you use it to help make a push and you use it as a means to take cover, it's a bad choice for anything outside objective games, since armor makes the benefits stationary. Now keep in mind what you can do with the other two. Blessings is always a good choice if you don't know what you want to use. But, keep in mind that with weapons like Event Horizon, in the Spindle archetype, while weapons of light is on, it's consistently one shot body to all guardians (don't know if a certain level of armor saves you, but I've always hit OHK with it). Now, that's just the super. If you don't want to use the super primarily, get yourself backup plans and memory of felwinter. Now, if you'll get your favorite shotgun, please. Now, make sure you run unbreakable and relentless for your force barrier. Yes, if you were wondering, the strongest PvP ability at a defender's disposal is the force barrier. With all this active, you're quite strong and a very formidable opponent. Teamshot is really the only way to take one of these guys out before they skate to you and put a slug into your face. Now, take a pick in grenade. Defenders actually have great grenades. They not only have spike grenades, which are starting to see more play recently so hunters can feel at home, but they also have a sticky grenade, and a grenade that will take away supers and abilities. You heard me right. TAKE AWAY SUPERS. Master those things, and you'll have a tether at your side at all times. So yeah. If you're a titan looking to enjoy yourself a bit, change it up, and maybe find yourself a new favorite setup (I've fallen in love with backup plans and felwinter). Hope you found this helpful. Edit: Obligatory "We're trending". Obligatory confetti poppers for first time trending
🎉🎉🎉🎉
Edit 2: Because people are all trying to defend (haha) armor of light, lemme just say that armor is best used in objective game modes. I exclusively run armor on my bubble if I'm playing control, because a bubble is a very powerful thing and can almost guarantee a point, but I couldn't really think of a specific way to run it, soooo, yeah... Also, real quick, I know that other exotics such as Armamentarium work well, having double nades with your super, but these loadouts are meant to take advantage of the things defenders have to offer at the maximum, which mostly involves using defender specific exotics. Don't get me wrong, double suppressors or mag nades are always fun. But like I said, those are generally useful for any subclass you're using, not just defender. These are just suggestions, keep in mind. I wouldn't want anyone to only use these. Explore the subclass! Reply with your own favorite loadout! Make up your own new one!

  • Was a fine post till you started hating on armour of light, so what if you only should use it for objectives, isn't that the whole point of a bubble to put it down and defend a place, I won so many Osiris games because of armour of light and idiots trying to charge me in my bubble thinking it's blessings

    • Do not listen to this man! All you need is: Armamentarium for double magnetic or suppression nades, matador, And Armor of Light. Sit on B flag in control and just start wrecking.

      • Great post. I will try the gauntlets soon! The biggest challenge I see as a bubble bro is keeping your bubble around. When you die, your bubble goes away and everyone who could take advantage of it now is screwed. So all you can to stay alive. Weapons or blessings can swing the entire tide of a match. This is the part I screw up a bunch lol. If you run armor I highly recommend armamentarium and suppression grenades. It can work even on clash, skirmish and rift. You have to be aggressive in and out of your bubble. I had several matches where I pissed the other team off enough that they charged into my bubble to kill me. A suppression grenade screws their jumps and grenades, and you and one other player can mow them down. Keep one in reserve for anyone on their way with a super. If a blade dancer charges you, drop a suppression grenade in your bubble and back out of it. It can shut down their super while it keeps the explosion and effects inside so you are free to step back in and stomp.

            • One time a stormcaller walked into my Armor of light bubble. It didn't end well for him. The enemy in front of me just ran away after seeing that.

            • Step 1: Equip No Backup Plans. Step 2: Equip Matador. Step 3: Acquire hate mail. And that's how you play Defender in PvP.

                • Trust me when I say the only way to play bubble titan is with amour of light. Exotics to run are Crest of Alpha Lupi or Armamentarium and what ever weapon you want with a shotgun. And always run the suppressor grenade. Bubbles if played properly will generate 5-6 orbs each bubble. Blessing and weapons are actually pointless when running a bubble in pvp. BTW an amour of light bubble popped over a blessing or weapons bubble will equal a death for the person dumb enough to think they can beat an amour of light bubble. Or for anyone stupid enough to enter one.

                    • No Armamentarium for recommended Exotics? Defender probably has one of the better grenade list for sub classes. It's always fun to Suppress people out of their Supers.

                        • Armor is very viable for aggressive play. Pop it on top of enemy team and go to town with shotgun/melee. Choke points are excellent, someone will super the ward titan backs out and use primary, also guardians tend to flock to the wards like moths to flames, hard scoping or just waiting for it to disappear. You can challenge them with skill but sometimes it is best to let your team charge in with supers Leroy Jenkins style.
