Here is a little data I gathered during my exotic engram farming for May and June. As a solo player I was very excited about the new Exotic Engram and fusion system from the April update. This felt like the path to the pinnacle for me. I was at respectable 313 before the update, but thanks to the new system I am now at 334.9.
It wasn’t long after the update I became frustrated. I had a streak where I got nothing but Heavy and Helmet engrams. Needing other weapons and armor to increase my light I was annoyed. Like many other guardians I also became suspicious that they ninja nerfed 3oC or messed with the algorithm for drops.
I looked for other posts, saw similar questions, read some info that others had put together on Reddit and the like, but I could not find much current info -post April update- that answered my questions. To satisfy my own suspicions and for fun I tracked my 3oC usage, drop-rate, and engram type. Here is my abbreviated findings.
Through May and June I used 256 3oC and received 49 Exotic Engrams. For and average of 5.22 3oC/Engram. The longest streak I had was 15 3oC in a row before the Engram dropped. I had 2 instances where I only used only 1 3oC. Here is a breakdown of the engram type I received.
10 Primary
8 Special
7 Heavy
5 Helmet
10 Arm
4 Chest
5 Leg
A couple other observations I found.
During May I used an average of 3 per day while in June I used closer to 5. In May I acquired 24 engrams while in June I got 25 -lending some support to the theory that the more you use them, the less potent 3oC become.
I almost always allowed a 15 minute gap between usage of 3oC. However on one occasion I killed the Taken Ultra at the Citadel on my way to the Gatelord. The Taken Ultra dropped an Exotic. Thinking there was no way I would get anything anyway, I used a 3oC and very quickly killed the Gatelord who dropped an Exotic as well, so using them very quickly doesn't eliminate the possibility of an Exotic drop.
I had several streaks where I got a large majority of one type of engram. That said, I found no correlation between gear light level, available gear slots in personal inventory, use of exotic gear or any other predictable way to manipulate the Exotic RNG algorithm. However I do think that what you have equipped can factor into the algorithm, I just can’t find a way to manipulate it. I could be wrong though.
Any other guardians out there with similar stories or questions?

I do ultra knight then jump to regicide double boss's a three of coins for each but die between so I keep the check point then of to black garden three statues. Some times I get 3 exotics through one run of this some times only one. It's 15 minute cool down on the boss you use the coin on. Not the actual coin.

I think this is a great example of applying the scientific method for the benefit of the greater good. As for those who complain that exotics are supposed to be exotic, I might say that that perhaps should be the case... if this were dark souls or Diablo. This is not so. Destiny is a pub/casual game with the added bonus of also having an extreme competitive side (see exhibit A: Trials and exhibit B: /fire teams/ of lagswitching douches in IB on ps3) The fact the destiny is able to cater to such a hardcore group and casuals alike is basically saying that bungie is trying to make a Pokemon of fps's. That's not easy. If the quest to get necrosis or the old exotic bounties was like trying to capture a level 90 mewtwo, then not many people are going to get them. But we all know that any of us who played pokemon were probably able to get it. And since destiny has no trading/sharing system like Pokemon, the added factor that many of them require completing events that need a fairly large group of coordinated people in order to get a fairly guaranteed exotic through raids or nightfalls, and the fact the because there is surely a large large number of "weekend warriors" who can't put as much time as they want to into the game, it really only makes sense that there should be a compromise to cater to the people that want to play the game but simply can't make time for raids and "gitting gud". And if you think that's whining, I would be willing to bet you are one of the elitist tea baging trials and crucible people I used to meet in my days on ps3 xD Good day Sirs!

24 RepliesI hope they take 3 oc out the game exotics should only be gained from the hardest activity's not something you get for killing a yellow bar on patrol. When you have no exotics to chase the game becomes boring quick so bungie please take 3oc out the game totally.

I pop one everytime I use the previous and receive an exotic every 1-5 used....

Edited by Diamond D Nice: 7/16/2016 11:28:04 PMI always kept 30Cs active. Since April I've gotten one primary, two specials, 4 heavies and about 40 armor pieces. I'm 100% sure my account has something about it that prevents primary weapons dropping at a normal rate. like I think it's bugged. Even in iron banner primate don't drop often for me. Because even since vanilla destiny primaries (blues, legendaries, exotics) just don't drop often.

1 ReplyI find these posts funny. To me I always have one three of coins on. Always! I get 3-6 exotics a day. They drop all the time. There is virtually no cool down, it might be 1 minute. You can kill the hive ultra or the cabal ultra out side the ship on the dreadnought then run straight in and kill the ultra Knight and get an exotic off both of them, so however long that takes to run ( 1 minute +-). You want exotics just have one equipped all the time and profit. This is my experience. Oh ya you can get 2 exotics to drop from one three of coin as well.

likey licky nipple time.

I got 2 exotic drops off one Taken Champion at Citadel on Venus. Only time that happened. Other than that I farm Hive Ultra Knight on dreadnaught and get maybe one exotic every 4 to six 3 of coins. I usually pop 1 and fight Ogre or Cabal champion in front of Cabal ship then pop one more before heading to Hive Ultra Knight over hole in ceiling. In an hour of playing i usually get 3 exotics at least.

Here's what I got: 12 helmets 6 gauntlets 8 boots. 2 primary. Both primaries were bad juju, and all of the armor was the same 2 items on a cycle.
-
8 RepliesHere's what I got last month: 46 boots Nothing else.
-
2 Replies10 primary lucky. I always get heavy or special.
-
1 Replythat is A LOT higher drop rate than what I get. Mine is 1 exotic per 13.5 3oC. This was over a 5 week period since I started playing again. Before I quit playing 7 months ago the drop rate for me was 1 exotic per 6.3 3oC.
-
2 RepliesI just want to know if they continue to stack up when you exit the game or if they go away like a vanguard streak, etc would. Let's hope not!
-
Don't know if it's just me but before the June update I would get an exotic engram every 5-6 3oC. Since the June update seems like one every 10-12 3oC.

5 RepliesEdited by boi: 7/16/2016 2:09:16 AMIn the past 3 weeks, I've received 9 Exotic Helmets 4 Exotic Gauntlets 2 Exotic Chest Armors 5 Exotic Boots 5 Primary Exotics 6 Special Exotics 3 Heavy Exotics Total : 34 Engrams BUT, with Legendaries, 2 Legendary Helmets 13 Legendary Gauntlets 12 Legendary Chest Armors 14 Legendary Boots 11 Legendary Class Armors 2 Legendary Primaries Total : 54 Legendary Engrams Total : 88 Engrams
Wow, a random spoiler!
This is just an assumption but it seems that every other match or ultra I kill, I receive an exotic. So every other time I use a 3oC and I tend to get exotics fast. But I also do it at the very end, as it seems that the drop rate decreases over time after I use it at the beginning of the match.. I'm pretty sure they nerfed it. I think they expected people to grind exotics until they reached 335, rather than doing the things they set for the players. It's a little silly, since we're bound to do it anyways. Edit: kinda mistyped which messed up my calculation lol

Thanks. For writing all that down, and for sharing it. Great information

Primary exotics drop for me along the rate of 1 per 50 (possibly more) 3oC used... and when one does drop 8 times out of 10 it's an effin monte carlo... or a jade rabbit. As for special the drop rate is some what better but it's almost always a zen :/ (seriously I have 1 on my hunter and 1 on my warlock plus 4 in the vault all dropped at 335) heavy exotics are a mix of either thunderlord, dragons breath or super good advice. Of course armour, boots and gauntlets drop for me much MUCH more, so when I do finally get weapons it's normally something I have :(
-
3 RepliesI also had a poor drop rate, until I started drinking Metamucil, eating my prunes and bran cereal. Now my drop rate is the shit.
-
1 ReplyIt makes me happy to see a post with intelligence to it now and again.
-
This is stupid and a waste of time. 3oc will be gone in year 3 anyways or stay dropping year 2 exotics.
-
I believe it's random.

7 RepliesI know this isn't the place to ask but while on the topic of drops. Crucible rewards package faction reward package and vanguard reward package have not dropped over light level (297) when I was trying to help my brother get back into the game. I played on his character telling him how easy it is to level up and that happened. None of those dropped over his current light level. Does any one know why or have any info on that?
-
5 coin drop rate is exactly what I get too. I never wait between unsuccessful uses, just farm black garden. People get very angry whenever I say this for some reason.
-
I used 20 three of coins only to get one exotic
-
3 RepliesI just started a new character not long ago, a level 20 Titan. Is there any chance of dropping year one exotics? Or is it a waste of 3oC
-
I don't farm nearly as much as any other people posting and here of late I'm lucky to get 10 3oC a week to farm. I do have a good drop rate but I have terrible luck with what I get. Out of the last 25 engrams I've opened, 24 were armor and probably close to 20 were gauntlets. 😐 The other one was a heavy weapon. I've only ever got like 3 or 4 primary ones ever and two of them were the Regime which I already owned from upgrading a legacy engram lol.
