This post was made in support of ingame LFG and why it's a better idea that optional matchmaking for endgame. Many post I've seen have called for optional matchmaking due to the fact that people are incapable of finding a group quickly. (which is mostly by their own merit but we'll get to that at the end) Let me point out one big problem with endgame matchmaking. Communication. Go run strikes, PvP, weeklies or 28 PoE and you'll find no one uses their mic. Well this isn't a problem for a strike, weekly, or 28 PoE because the mechanics don't elude too far from "kill everything in sight". Now you run into problems when you try to argue that you can do the Vault of Glass with no one using their mics. How would you tell your matchmade teammate that an oracle is behind him? That your running relic? That your swamped in Vex and need help? That a Minotaur is behind your teammate? What planet you got teleported to? That you don't know how to run relic? And then he can't walk you through what to do because he's not using his mic. How do I tell them a gorgon is coming? Or that now is a good time to jump or that it's not? You see, without mics, the Vault would be nearly impossible and you'd spend more time wiping than you would have spent making a group. Another problem I see happening is being matchmade with AFKer's, underlevels or someone who isn't using the proper weapons for the activity. Obviously I don't want to play with them so I have two options: Leave or tough it out. Toughing it out will result in wipes because of him. Leaving would defeat the purpose of matchmaking wouldn't it? To save time. And let's say there's a way to kick him, now you have to wait for someone to be matchmade in which will take who knows how long. When if you had just took the time to choose or make your team off of LFG, you wouldn't have played with said player. Checkpoints...how would checkpoints work? Would I be matchmade into the first available group? What if I wanted to do the whole raid? I'd have to back out and start over and hope I get matchmade at the start of the raid. But then I've already defeated the purpose of matchmaking: saving time. Will everyone who uses matchmaking be subjected to the start? Well then if I get disconnected, I have to restart the raid, then I really have wasted more time than I would have been using doing LFG. Would there be a filter for a checkpoint? Well then, we're one step closer to an in-game LFG. No doubt someone will say "Well just don't use it, problem solved." This is inherently and purposefully ignoring the problems with matchmaking. If you read nothing, read this: Now what Bungie should do is make an in-game LFG. This will benefit the whole much more than matchmaking. Or even a lobby where you can provide a description of yourself and weapons to have someone invite you to a party or the fireteam. In conclusion, wether you see it or not, optional matchmaking for higher level content will result in much more difficulties than LFG. If your priority is simply getting a team faster with no regards to how good they are or their credentials, then be my guest, support matchmaking. But if you want a way to find a team full of capable players that meet any prerequisites that you might have, I think it's best that we as a community think of something more elaborate than matchmaking.
Also a guide to getting a team quickly using Destinylfg.com. (Note: This is for PS4, the mechanics might be a little different on other systems) •Go to destinylfg.com and fill out the boxes accordingly. •Make sure you provide any helpful information in the description box but keep it short. (Example: Can run sword. Have max Gally. Done this activity before. Experienced. Etc. Also, make sure your the right level, this will directly affect how fast you get a group.) •Make sure you click the "save my information text box", this will make listing you so much faster. •List yourself and wait for invites. Normally (for me) invites take about 30 to 120 seconds. •If you haven't gotten any invites, list yourself again. •If you decide to make a group, don't send messages or friend request. Send make a chat and send invites. This is superbly more effective. •Never use #recruitment, their full of idiots. If you make a group, it will take you approx. 4 or 5 minutes. If you join a group it should take half a minute to about 2 or 3. Hope this helped.
Disclaimer: Optional matchmaking could work for the following: •Nightfalls •32 PoE •Dailies •34 PoE What it wouldn't work for: •Vault of Glass •Crota •Trials of Osiris •35 PoE Edit: LFG or Ingame LFG, (not #recruitment) Pros: •Communication is much more likely. •Filters are available so that you can find a player with a specific skill set. (i.e. Swordbearer, Relic holder etc.) •Allows me to find a certain type of player. (I.e. Someone already with the Eye of Osiris. •Allows me to find a certain class of player. (i.e. If I want a Hunter, Warlock and Titan for Skolas, I can get them or if I want all warlocks for the Trials of Osiris.) •Group is more likely to be successful if it's premade. Cons: •Some elitism. •Takes a bit longer for some because not everyone knows how to use it effectively. •Must use a third party website (This con is eliminated if it's ingame.) Optional Matchmaking Pros: •Gets you a group faster. Cons: •Communication is less likely if any at all. •No filters of any kind. •Possibility to be matchmade with underlevels. •No kick option (And if there was a kick option, it would promote the same elitism you see in LFG) •Possibility to be matchmade with someone who isn't experienced in the activity. (Problem is compounded if they don't have a mic) •Bad matchmade groups (i.e. A group full of all Titans for the Trials or all hunters for Skolas.) •Complicated checkpoint solution. List will be edited as suggestions come in. Edit: Keeping a diary of how long it took me to get an invitation for my all non-matchmade activities starting on June 14, 2015 to prove to some of you, your simply using LFG wrong. But I still support an ingame LFG. 6/14/15: Trials of Osiris-49 seconds 34 Prison of elders- 13.3 seconds 34 Prison of elders- 2 minutes and 52 seconds 34 Prison of elders- 1 minute and 6 seconds 6/15/15 Trials of Osiris- 1 minute and 3 seconds Trials of Osiris- 1 minute and 10 seconds Trials of Osiris- 53 seconds

I've posted these issues and more with end game matchmaking on many posts, they still believe it'll work. It's going to be a mess, and very low completion rate. As long as it isn't forced on me, I don't care. I say give them optional matchmaking if they want it, it won't help them beat it any easier. It will only allow them to enter it with a full team. Here are some issues I see with matchmaking on end game content. Host has terrible connection. (Can't switch host) Group wipes once, player leaves. Match made group has class balance issues. Group has minimum level requirement. Group is under geared. Players don't use mics. Each player has their own strategy. Playing solo in a group. (Doesn't listen to instructions) Gets desired loot, leaves group. Doesn't get desired loot, leaves group. Afk player. Players don't speak the same language. Player disconnects, slot is filled by matchmaking. Player can't commit to time needed to complete content. Player gets checkpoint and leaves. (Would there even be checkpoints?) Player needs to switch characters. (Slot is filled) Player needs to run to the tower. (Slot is filled) Multiple players trying to lead the group. No one can run sword for crota. No one can run relic in VoG. Players don't know the boss fights. Trolls.

      • This guy has a brain. Thank you. LFG is probably the easiest thing to use to find randoms. The people saying they can't find a group or it's taking them forever to find a group are probably doing one of the following: • Posting once and just waiting for messages or invites • Refusing to message/invite others because their GT or PSN is too long. • Ignored messages or invites from others because the others didn't have Ghorn. There's probably others, but I'm not going to dig too deep. If OMM does happen I'll just join into it to ruin the fun. You can't kick me then.

        • Matchmaking. The key word is optional. And it should be allowed in every event. I prefer finding able bodies on my own, but some people can't. So, afford them the opportunity, please.

        • The reason for no matchmaking is because your playing with people you don't know they could be good or they could suck.or you get people you find in strikes who sit there afk to let you do all the work.although they should put in game lfg so you know can see there rank, weapons, and class

        • First: As long as it's optional it's fine. I do have some things that I prefer to solo because it tests me as a player. Second: The whole mic problem you were talking about holds less merit than a bucket of water with a hole in the bottom. If you need to talk, then you get on your mic and say something. The other person doesn't need a mic to hear your voice.

              • "Takes a bit longer to find a group" is an understatement. I had an hour to play the other day, and 40 of those minutes were spent trying to find a group. I will deal with all the cons in random matchmaking in a heartbeat if it means I can play the damn game.

Wait, all of those problems are ones that people requesting OMM are willing to deal with, how would optional matchmaking affect players with plenty of friends at all? It WOULDN'T. All you people against it are just bitching for the sake of bitching. OMM would benefit players who can't easily find raid, nightfall, and PoE teams. The same issues you have stated above are also apparent in the -blam!-ing LFG anyways, so OMM would make everything the same, but quicker and easier to access.

                  • You bring up good points. Yes, it'd be optional.... But what's the point of implementing it if it'll end up wasting more time than it saves. Saving time is the whole reason people want MM, so if it doesn't do that, why have it at all?

Optional matchmaking for any event in Destiny is detrimental to players who have friends in their fireteams because... because... BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO SCROLL BY THE OPTION AND AVOID CLICKING IT !!! What a horrible mess that would be.

                  • I think that optional matchmaking should exist as an unbiased way for casual players to find games. Granted, your odds of success are probably reduced by playing with randoms, but there's already LFG sites for finding groups with specific requirements and expectations. The elitists and hardcore players can find fellow guardians like themselves, and everybody else will at least have an way to find a group where there's no discrimination such as needing to have a certain weapon or a microphone.

                  • Do people think that matchmaking vog or crota would be bad because people don't have mics? I'd just load in then start a party, invite everyone in about 20s and it's now exactly the same as lfg... Randoms in a party doing a raid.

                    • very well thought out.. 1) if its optional and you have a team, it would not affect you. 2) if its optional and you use it with no mic, yes it will decrease chances of completing, so leave and join again. 3) if it happens, you could still use lfg to find a more organized team. 4) check points system may have to be reviewed to allow this.. so many people leaving and joining at certain areas.. enable check points if you complete two check points?? Just my thoughts on it.. i may only use it when bored to help out, but its nicectochave options. If players wantcto gamble on it, let them.

                        • I hear what your saying, and I think you bring up some good points. But the thing is, we're talking about OPTIONAL matchmaking. That means that you don't have to use it if you don't want to. I can completely understand why someone might not want to, but if people want to try ot, then they should be able to.

I ran a 34 Arena with 2 guys who didn't use mics. No problem. If you can play, you can play. Everything doesn't take communication. Maybe vog. Maybe Crota. Maybe 35 skolas, but the simple solution is if you're using a Mic when you hit matchmaking they'll match you with ppl that have their mics plugged in and ready to go too. The way matchmaking is now they already match u with ppl who use the same weapons/shaders/emblems etc so it's no reason they wouldn't be able to add an option of "mics only" matchmaking... Sidenote. Lol @ a team full of warlocks for trials. That's such a cheap idea smh. Lol @ a team full of titans not being good for trials. (That team would wreck with a defender & 2 strikers or even all strikers) And all hunters for The Arena would do just fine considering they could all go invisible for everything.

                                • If u want a perfect fire team for a raid or PoE, u shouldn't matchmaker. That's why matchmaking is OPTIONAL. Matchmaking would be only for people who do not have the resources to put a team together, yet still want to play the game they paid money for.

Imagine if matchmaking wasn't on for crucible. The amount of time between mat he's would be horrendous. Everyone who has friends or teams great good for you. The MAJORITY do not and need MM. End of argument. Optional MM does. Not. Hurt. Anyone.
