This does not involve cheating or manipulating networks, consoles, ... in any way.
This trick simply involves a single specific weapon perk.
First off you will need a scout rifle with the shoot to loot perk, preferably with a high firerate. As far as I know you can only find this on green scout rifles, possibly blue ones too but I haven't found any yet. Either way it doesn't really matter as you will only need it for a few seconds.
Basically what this perk does is you can shoot ammo to pick it up. Why is this so good? Because you can shoot ammo boxes multiple times before they disappear and get more ammo each time you hit it.
This is why a fast firing scout rifle is recommended.
Using this method, you can get 8 rockets per heavy ammo box and 4-5 from heavy ammo dropped from enemies.
Note that you can't shoot the actual ammo box before it is opened, you must let your teammates open the box so you can shoot the actual purple ammo that drops on the ground.
Shoot the ammo as fast and as many times as you can and you'll get 8 rockets every time.
I have not tested this a lot on machineguns but it doesn't seem to be very effective, only giving a few extra bullets per shot.
This method is extremely effective in Skirmish and Doubles because you generally have more time to switch guns, shoot the ammo, ... and you're pretty much invincible with 8 rockets in a 3v3 or 2v2.
It's a little but tougher to pull of in Control or Clash because there's more enemies to prevent you from safely doing the trick but if you succeed you can get up to 24 rockets per game and that's just from 3 heavy ammo drops. This isn't including heavy dropped from enemies so you could get much than that.
Sidenote: This is also helpful in PvE. If you see a purple ammo box simply switch your gun and get maximum heavy ammo from every purple ammo box. No need to use synths when you can use this instead.

i wouldn't say this is really useful, because if you're facing someone with a k/d over a 1.5, when you die all those rockets will be theirs. Someone will be guaranteed to have a super or they'll get lucky and then those rockets will be used against you

I believe this is a cheap tactic for PvP. I dont do it. I do use shoot to loot in PvE. I expect it will be patched now. Thanks.

2 RepliesWhile technically this isn't cheating or cheesing, I'm sure it's not the intended intention of the Shoot To Loot perk and I wouldn't be surprised if the Sandbox Designers fix this with the next update now that it has been made common knowledge.

3 RepliesEdited by Meat: 2/11/2015 11:09:24 PMIt's also a really good way to get banned quickly. Bungie swings the hammer on that shit. Edit: idiotic posts like this are also what draws attention to the exploits and encourages Bungie to fix it.
-
You really put the tag competitive? This is such a sad thing to do. Hopefully Bungie patches this. You really think you are supposed to get 8 rockets from one heavy?
-
76 RepliesFunny i just made a post about cheaters like you.
-
Uh yeah... This is the game devs/play testers fault, same with every other damn thing in this game (cough-VoGSniperPlatforms-cough). Classic example of don't hate the player; hate the game
-
Dang, people are gonna call you a cheater, but good find. It's definitely something they should patch.
-
I have a blue shoot to loot scout rifle that goes up to 294 damage
-
Edited by SnakiestOrc7366: 2/11/2015 10:51:54 PMI have a blue Scout (Naraka SR5) and Sniper rifle (Hieracon LR5) with shoot and loot option.
-
I have a blue scout rifle with this perk. I forget the name but the sole purpose of it is to be able to shoot ammo to loot it. I don't like rocket launchers so I don't plan on trying this but it's not cheating IMO.
-
3 RepliesStep 1: allow opposing team to get ammo Step 2: kill opposing team Step 3: pick up the ammo you need and save the rest
-
Yea, "unlimited". Haha, sure
-
Or you can use that OP gun called the Thorn, and kill people just as fast..
Nerf
Edited by cjnusn: 1/30/2015 11:47:03 PMWell that's new

1 ReplyYou've got to be careful with this. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a bannable offence. Manipulating heavy ammo in crucible is very dodgy ground.
-
1 ReplyI'm positive their is a cap on heavy ammo in pvp.
-
lol at all the anger in here You should be glad I shared a method which has been around since Day 1. I don't even use it that much , feel free to check my rocket kills (only works on rocket launchers).
-
4 RepliesWtf, how can you NOT think this is an exploit? The perk is just supposed to let you pick it up from afar, not pick it up more than once. You're exploiting an error that causes the brick to not disappear immediately after you get the ammo the first time.
-
5 RepliesPatch. It's not supposed to work more than once. If you picked up like 3 heavy ammo crates that's fine for near infinite ammo, which does give the same feeling, that's fine. Exploiting the system, nope.
-
Or your can just use VoG or CE boots that give more heavy ammo? I get 8 anyways because of my gear.
-
2 RepliesEdited by BlueJacket1975: 1/25/2015 4:35:06 PMWell, THAT explains one of the single biggest causes of me swearing in the crucible ("How the bleep does ANYone get THAT many bleeping rockets?!?")
-
1 ReplyHonestly, not sure why others are so against this idea and calling it cheating. You are using the game mechanics exactly as they were laid out. There's a reason why legendary and exotic guns don't have this perk: because it would be heavily sought after. People usually end up dismantling their uncommon, and sometimes rare, guns that have this perk and it's forever lost to the higher players. There's a rare snipe with shoot to loot and I hope I come across it someday.

1 ReplyEdited by Orbital Drop Shock Trooper: 1/26/2015 6:20:21 AMThis needs a patch. Also it should be shoot once to loot one ammo pack. This is multiple ammo packs within the ONE ammo pack due to multiple shots. I'm not saying it's a glitch but it is way too exploitative in a PvP setting. Heavy Ammo is already abused in the Crucible. This needs patching.

2 RepliesAlready knew this but,.....for all the people crying, devs r suppose to play the game all of it and test everything they make. So if they didn't do there job its on them. Its not an exploit the game gives u instructions to play that way( pretty sure it was intended for pve) so why not. Hard mode crota is gonna be fun now
-
5 RepliesAlthough I hate cheating, exploiting and all other bad habits I have to agree, this isn't an exploit but rather taking advantage of a perk It's in the game and fulfils it's mechanism, so is in fact legit. It's very handy to know, especially for nightfalls if you can sit back and pick ammo up without exposing yourself
