So I am kinda confused about the materials you can collect like spin metal, helium filaments ect….what's the purpose of collecting them? When I go to the quartermaster the only option is for me to buy them with marks but why would I do that if I can just get them for free by collecting them? Is there any way to get glimmer or other rewards from collecting the materials?

2 RepliesIt can be confusing at first, and I think it's still very much a WIP. Basically, you can buy with marks of you don't like farming (patrols, daily story, that kind of thing). I don't see the appeal, personally, as if rather buy legendary stuff with my marks. But some players raid and get sweet legendary weapons that way, so there is less impetus to buy from tower vendors. Also, sometimes you just wind up with lots of weapons and armor, and want to upgrade it all quickly. Marks help do that. Hope this helped!

Yeah it used to be better where you could actually just turn in your mats for marks instead of the opposite, but in pretty sure bungie took it out because of how easy it was to just do farming runs for spinmetal or relic iron.

Collecting them takes a lot of time. As you progress you'll need more materials more often to level things up. By all means collect if it's easy, but level up your reputation so you can purchase them in bulk.
