Could you tell me what that nature is? Couldn't find a definition of MMO online that fits the bill. Edit: and I mean, really, what do people generally think defines an MMO? How do we know what the majority of people would call an MMO and what they would not? How do you decide what definition is the "official one"? Can you define what an MMO is with a universally accepted description, some sort of official way?

mmo is simply how many people are on the server. destiny already has role playing aspects so it would be a rpg. it is also a first person shooter. when it comes to fireteams there can only be 6, however how many can be at the tower and world exploration would determine if it is a mmo even if only for the social aspects. if they have raid/event content with more than 6 player groups (like 20+) then it would be a mmo for sure. it is pretty much a m(m?)orpgfps.

IMO i think a mmorpg is an open world with servers and character progression and everyone running around at the same time EVERYWHERE at all times. no separation whatsoever. Destiny is similar to gta more than an mmorpg.

highkingjt, then by your definition wow would not be a mmorpg. they have instanced areas where not everyone sees each other just like destiny, just with more people. normally you only see a lot of people in cities, much like the tower in destiny. so it is much more like wow than gta in almost every aspect.

you mean the social hubs like the tower in destiny? i'm not being a smartass by the way. i am just pointing out the DEFINITION of a mmo. wow is not a moba, moba stands for multiplayer online battle arena. like spartan assault. battlefield 4 is a mmo, but would not fit into your definition of a mmo. you are confusing mmo with mmorpgs.

  • Wow idk why you are spouting all these definitions. I am not confused at all. Regardless of what you say destiny is not an mmorpg or an mmo sorry kid.

  • mmo means massively multiplayer online, not a genre. It refers to the number of current connections to a remote server.

Are you, like, a little bit crazy? I never said Battlefield 4 is an MMO. You might want to check your eyes, maybe get glasses if you think it's not in the head. MMO is not a genre, but rather a definition for specific types of games where you have a lot of people on the same server, like in WoW, TERA, whatever MMORPG you can think of. Battlefield is not an MMO, and for the sake of all that is holy, I sincerely hope nobody is so god damn stupid they would think that.

  • I think he exaggerated a bit with the "at all times", think he meant that the majority of the world is not instances. Granted, WoW has a lot of outdoor instancing in the vanilla world since Cataclysm... not sure how much there is in Pandaria. Most of those affect people only for the start of a zone, though, or in specific smaller areas of a zone

  • it was introduced in wotlk, they just changed the entire world around in cataclysm.

  • Yeah I forgot, I actually started playing a little before WotLK came out. Icecrown had some, and then that red dragon zone that was some "blight" whatever if I recall correctly (I have a very bad memory lol). It wasn't that extensive though. And still not as extensive in the Old World after Cataclysm hit.

actually it was even in starting zones. you would have different numbers for the different instanced areas and sometimes had to coordinate with people in your group to join the right instanced area. it would be like "undercity-1, undercity- 2, etc". it's just that most people didn't have that kind of coordination with their guilds and friends to notice i guess. although i'm not sure if that would be considered instanced area, but it is the exact same thing as what destiny does. only less people per area. they are predominantly on the same servers, so it would probably be considered a mmo.

  • Thats not an mmo, mmo simply means massively multiplayer online, its not a genre. It refers to the number of concurrent connections to a remote server, nothing else.

  • I agree, MMO alone is not a genre but a prefix to a genre that is used when appropriate. What do you mean by "concurrent connections to a remote server"? Does that mean like how an MMORPG like WoW has a lot of people in a single server who can interact or do you mean something else? Btw, did HighKingJT edit the "RPG" after the MMO after your reply? (since it says MMORPG now)
