Faith is not religion. Religion is more of a combination of faith and passion/compassion. I heard religion defined as "A matter of convenience to convey the space and time of humans in the cosmos" which has also been used to describe architecture, word for word. Take it as you will.

2 RepliesTo follow a religion, you must have faith; to have faith, you need not be religious.

There are three levels of faith regarding the nature of the universe: >Does the universe exist? This is debatable, but we pretty much have to assume so if we want to get anything accomplished. >Did the universe come from something? It's not reasonable to say it came from nothing, but there isn't any basis to say that it had to come from something, so it either always existed in various incarnations or something created it. In the case of the latter though you get stuck in an infinite loop: what created the creator, and what created that creator, if a creator doesn't have a creator because it is eternal, why can't the universe itself be eternal too? >Where did it come from? Athiests say: "lets put our heads together and find out, oh and that vacuum energy stuff sounds pretty cool". Thiests say: "lets assume the creator is a sentient being. Lets also assume this being made it with us in mind. Don't forget to assume that he looks like us too, or that he will preserve our consciousness after we die to either forever eternally saturate us in his love or torture us for doing things that feel good."

5 RepliesEdited by Ad Hoc: 11/18/2013 7:54:22 PMI probably agree, but it's different than what you're saying. I'm not sure, but I'm willing to bet that every person has at least a little faith in a higher power. It doesn't have to be conscious, just an inkling- a feeling of something more. There probably isn't, but it's still a interesting part of the human psyche. Maybe it's a defense mechanism to shield ourselves from difficulties, I don't know. But as they say, "there's no atheists in foxholes".

3 Repliesi believe this thread is shit.
-
5 RepliesAssuming you're talking about this from solipsist's point of view. I would argue that blind faith in a diety is a different kind of faith than trusting that your senses are correct about the world around you.
-
7 RepliesAgreed, a lot of people forget that faith means trust.
-
But that's incorrect.
-
6 RepliesNo. I simply don't believe in things. I lack that thought process. Perhaps the better word to use is "confidence." I have confidence that something will/will not happen based on my knowledge of the situation and of past events; but I don't believe. Belief implies faith, and faith implies acceptance without evidence.

6 RepliesI tried this thread once (although I put more effort into it). It didn't go well. Fedora's can't handle this.

I think your "has" should be turned into "needs"

29 RepliesMost theists fall into an Abrahamic religion, ie Christianity, Judaism or Islam. These are monotheistic faiths. Given that there are THOUSANDS of gods to choose from in the world, the fact that you don't believe in 99.9999% of them makes most theists almost as atheistic as me.
-
I don't believe in anything.

2 RepliesEdited by Mister Sparkles : 11/18/2013 5:19:30 PMNo... Atheism is a lack of belief/faith... There is a difference between trust and faith. Only stupid have faith in beliefs.
