It really isn't bad here in England, I've never felt oppressed because of my philosophies, but I hear the American population is only about 10% atheist. What's it like? Do you actively feel voicing your opinion publicly will result in some form of condemnation?

2 RepliesMarx, whatever they may have told you up to this point: Don't believe them! They are plants by the religious extremist and fundamentalist forces in the government to make the USA appear forward thinking and progressive. They, the religious extremist and fundamentalist forces in the government, run everything. Atheists are extremely oppressed in the USA. We are corralled into ghettos, we have no rights, we are constantly monitored, we are forced to work in hard labor camps, and spend the rest of the time either not working or sleeping in re-education camps in attempts to brain wash us. I hear them coming for me now, singing 'Glory Hallelujah' as they come up the stairs. Tell the UN Marx, tell them that atheists need help, tell them of the crimes they are committing here. Science save me.

8 RepliesNot at all. Unless "My parents made my 15 year old self go to church on Sunday waahhh!" counts for being oppressed.
-
I live in a cultural bubble in the San Francisco bay area. People are pretty chill about different philosophies here. However I have known quite a few mormons around here who were pretty intolerant of atheism.
-
From what I can tell, not that much; but it doesn't mean that they aren't oppressed. Hell, I see more Christians oppressed than Atheists, but that's just on the internet; which is a whole different story.
-
60 RepliesPlease, most atheists here are dumb teenagers that deserve being oppressed for their lack of common mentality.
-
Not at all
-
Why not Canada?

5 RepliesEdited by Orion: 8/29/2013 12:29:58 PMWHAT?! Blacks and Native Americans were (still are to a much smaller extent) oppressed. Hundreds of millions of Native Americans and Blacks were murdered in cold blood. And it took hundreds of years to give them respect and equal rights. Atheists in the U.S aren't oppressed at all. I would say at the most they are at a slight disadvantage. But that's only if they're being jerks about it.

3 RepliesIf anyone has reasonable suspicion you're an atheist is the workplace, you'll face negative treatment from your white co-workers and bosses. You could even end up fired over it, with the excuse being that you're not a "team player" due to the way your co-workers treat you. Unless you are able to conceal your religious affiliation, you will never get elected to a public office, and you will face heavy scrutiny in the military. I won't even get into how you might be treated outside of work.
-
2 RepliesOhohohoh its more than 10% I'll tell you that. Oh and umm how would someone put it... >land of the free. No one cares about religion.
-
2 RepliesThey aren't as long as they don't walk around saying "I'm an atheist and all religions are for people with small brains" like too many atheists are.
-
2 RepliesThe problem with America is that someone will act like an asshole about their beliefs and then claim they're being oppressed when people tell them to piss off. This applies to atheists just as much as theists, but like you said there's less atheists here. So when they ass off they have more people annoyed with them.
-
Not very oppressed. A lot of it depends on the area of the country one is in and one's family.
-
I don't go around boasting that god is fake. There's a rule called "hate and be hated". Other people can believe whatever they want. I only have a problem with it when we start hearing stories of parents who let their child die because god doesn't accept of medicine.
-
6 RepliesIt depends on where. Many places wouldn't give a shit, but others would. Announce you are atheist in the Bible-Belt and forget about getting a job. They wouldn't say it outright, but there would always be someone a little more qualified than you, regardless of how qualified you happened to be. Also, announce you are atheist and forget about serving in ANY public office. I don't think there is even a school board member that is openly atheist. I mean, look at the swearing in ceremony for any elected official. Every one of them have to put their hand on a Bible and swear on to god that they aren't lying.
-
I oppressed your mom 3 times last night.
-
Oppressed? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
-
Yes, I do, especially with people over 30. They can't fathom how anyone could be happy or find meaning in their life without there being a God.
-
3 RepliesWhere I live not at all, and I am pretty much in the capital! Most of my friends are atheists, but no one really cares about other people's religion haha not the main topic here lol
-
I live in the Bay Area so it's k.
-
It is odd, because it is socially unacceptable to voice your views if you are atheist, but it is also frowned upon to voice your christian views, and has been taken out of everything except government. I think that it is just that no one wants to know what eachother thinks.
-
5 RepliesAtheists seem a little more "abuseive" than the Christians.....
-
From what I've seen of American culture, Atheists do get shunned and picked out as 'hating their country' and such bullshit. England. The land where religion doesn't define if you're a nice person or not.
-
1 ReplyI'd wager most people in the US are... They just say the oppositeo n Census papers and such...
-
I don't remember hearing about families that kick out and cut off their children for being religious. That's something that is a very real concern for young atheists.
