Bungie’s Broken Security Policy: How a Hacker Stole My Destiny 2 Account, and Bungie Refuses to Help

Introduction: A Nightmare for Any Guardian I have been playing Destiny 2 since its release, investing thousands of hours and significant money into this game. Like many dedicated Guardians, I’ve grinded for god rolls, chased after raid completions, and built a legacy in the game. However, in early 2025, my worst nightmare became a reality: a hacker compromised my account, linked it to their Epic Games profile, and Bungie refused to help me recover it. What follows is the full timeline of how Bungie’s refusal to intervene has left me without my characters, my progress, and my account—despite clear proof that I am the legitimate owner. I’m sharing this publicly to warn other players and hopefully force Bungie to take action. The Hack: How My Destiny 2 Account Was Stolen Like many gamers, I have accounts across multiple platforms. My Steam account was unfortunately compromised, but I was able to recover it quickly by resetting my credentials. However, during the brief time the hacker had access, they linked my Bungie account (#5218) to their own Epic Games account (notmaleniaa). Once I regained control of my Steam, I discovered the damage had already been done: ✅ The hacker had full control of my Destiny 2 account through Epic Games. ✅ They renamed my profile to something ridiculous. ✅ They started using my account to ‘sherpa’ players to the Lighthouse (most likely for money, breaking Bungie’s own ToS). But then things got worse. The Login Battle: How the Hacker Destroyed My Characters Once I realized what had happened, I started logging into my account repeatedly to kick the hacker out of the game and interrupt his access. What happened next was a desperate struggle: 🔄 Every time I logged in, it forced him out. 🔄 Then he logged back in, kicking me out. 🔄 We went back and forth like this multiple times. Realizing that he was losing control of my account, the hacker decided to retaliate the only way he could—by permanently deleting my characters. 🚨 He started deleting my characters one by one, wiping out years of progress. 🚨 Each time I tried to log in, I could only watch as my hard-earned Guardians disappeared forever. 🚨 Before I could stop him, my entire account was gutted. This was not a mistake. This was an intentional act of destruction, enabled by Bungie’s broken security policies. Bungie’s Support Response: “We Can’t Help You” Desperate to stop the hacker, I immediately reached out to Bungie Support. I sent them multiple messages explaining the situation, providing all the proof of ownership I had, including: My purchase receipts from Steam, showing years of DLCs and expansions. My linked PlayStation and Xbox accounts, proving that I have played on multiple platforms and that the Epic Games account was the only unauthorized one. Screenshots showing my original account details before the hacker took over. Bungie’s response? “Due to mandatory security policy, Bungie is not able to remove connected platform accounts from Bungie.net profiles under any circumstances.” In other words: Bungie refuses to unlink the hacker’s Epic Games account, meaning they still have access to my account. This is despite the fact that: ❌ The Epic Games account was never mine. ❌ I can prove ownership of my Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation accounts. ❌ The hacker used my account for unauthorized activities, violating Bungie’s own ToS. Bungie had the power to intervene—but refused. Epic Games’ Official Response: “We Can’t Help You” After Bungie refused to act, I reached out to Epic Games Support to report the fraudulent account that linked itself to my Bungie profile. My request was simple: ✅ Ban the Epic Games account that hijacked my Bungie.net account. ✅ Unlink my Destiny 2 account from this fraudulent Epic Games account. Translation: “Because the Bungie.net account does not belong to us, we cannot help with this issue. Please contact Bungie Support.” So now, I’m in a loop of incompetence: 🚫 Bungie refuses to unlink the hacker’s Epic Games account. 🚫 Epic Games says it’s Bungie’s responsibility. 🚫 I, the rightful owner, am left without my account while a hacker exploits it. This proves beyond any doubt that only Bungie has the power to fix this issue—but they refuse to help their own paying customers. What Needs to Happen I’m not going to sit silently while Bungie refuses to take responsibility for protecting its players. 1️⃣ Bungie needs to allow legitimate account owners to unlink unauthorized accounts. 2️⃣ Bungie needs to offer account recovery support for players who have been hacked. 3️⃣ Bungie needs to take security breaches more seriously instead of telling paying customers to "figure it out themselves." I will keep fighting until I get my account back. If Bungie continues to ignore this issue, I will escalate it further, including: Filing a consumer complaint against Bungie for failing to protect account security. Exploring legal action for lost purchases and digital assets. Bringing this to gaming journalists and content creators to expose Bungie’s failure. Bungie, this is your last chance to do the right thing. 📢 To everyone reading this: Please share this post, spread the word, and help make sure Bungie can’t keep ignoring this issue. Let’s make some noise.

  • Account security is our responsibility. Bungie also doesn't store our login information.

    • Bungie isnt ignoring the issue. Their stance has always been account security is the player's responsibility. They also require all accounts to be authenticated to turn off cross save and to delink an account.
They started using my account to ‘sherpa’ players to the Lighthouse (most likely for money, breaking Bungie’s own ToS).
Well, if the TOS is broken, Bungie will just ban the account so you may want to consider that. The right thing is subjective. Their policies are the right thing according to their legal team. Your failing to secure your steam account and it getting compromised is not Bungie's fault. Trying to hold them accountable for that is not going to hold water. Even more so when most of these "hacks" that end up with accounts being added are cause by people using recovery services.

      • Man that sucks. I hope something can be done because that's so much time and money put into something.
