Are you joining from the destiny app? There's a high chance they're using discord or party chat to communicate

They should, maybe they tried, it's also possible you have network issues that block you from using game chat so you might not hear them

The consistency of which I can’t hear people is staggering. Yday I joined 2 raids, could communicate and we cleared both with no issues. Today, I have been trying to raid for 3 hours with no luck, jumping from one lfg to the next.

This happens sometimes. Where I can here other ps and pc players but only the pc players can hear the Xbox players. Usually just have them type their call-outs in chat

You should try using discord instead, might have better luck there

I have discord. How does the discord chat work with the game? Do you need to be invited, like psn party chat?

You open discord on your phone/computer, find a group then add them all to a call or join a voice channel
