Could someone explain the mindset behind the people who use this? What drives people to the loadout over every other gun combination in the game? Ease of use? Overall efficiency? Genuinely curious, as it's appearing more and more now.

3 RepliesHand cannons have high damage per shot, range and freedom to shoot precisely during jumps and slides. Shotguns are close range ohko killing machines.

5 RepliesThat type of loadout covers medium long to point blank ranges. Hand cannons also have high damage per shot making peek shooting a viable counter to most play types. Pair that with some of the roll combinations that can be put together and you end up with a very powerful weapon class. People run hand cannons because they are effective, simple as that.

6 RepliesThe ability to play VERY fast. People are going to say ease of use but fusions beat pellet shotguns there. Shotguns have some really high play making potential, so they’re fun to use and work very well when they’re in the hands of a good movement player. They’re also pretty easy to use against lower skill people who walk tightly around walls without thinking. Handcannons are the best guns for people who can hit their headshots in the air and on the ground, if you aim well they also have great play potential for 1v1s. They also pair well with special weapons due to upfront damage, which again lets you play fast.

8 RepliesEase of use combined with effectiveness. HCs are the easiest to use primaries in any (popular) PvP shooter. They also function as a soft or hard counter to literally every primary in the game. Shotguns give you instant OHK, or shot + melee kill damage out to about 8 meters on pellets, 12 on Slugs. Since Specials sustain themselves, Shotguns are the easiest to do this with since their kill range is so close to the source of ammo. There's also this weird stigma around Fusions and Automatic weapons as "unskilled," and pulses/scouts as "camper's guns." People gravitate away from those because of it.

It promotes fast pace gameplay and with the movement destiny provides its pretty easy to see why good players would go all in.

1 ReplyHand cannons are good because they have high damage output which means high outplay potential, plus they are the only primaries that are consistent in air at range. This just makes them fun to use and it also makes them very unique and strong. You cant be as aggressive and flashy with any other primary no matter how hard you try. Shotguns are the same, one hit kill with a pull of trigger without requiring the aim of a sniper although I don't think this means they take "no skill" like a lot of people seem to believe, it's just a different type of skill. Maps in destiny are very small so it is helpful to have a shotgun although they are getting worse and worse as they get nerfed in every season.

3 RepliesDamage per shot. They play amazingly. Pve or PvP. Spraying auto rifles just feels dated & the ttk vs the amount of bullets being thrown just mathematically does not make sense. Shotguns buy you wow moments in PvP of which is the point of PvP. It is pretty hard to have wow moments with smg’s, sidearms(of which I would actually put second behind shotguns), fusions or gl’s. I have always been mediocre in PvP.. And when I started playing fps games, I used the ol auto rifle… But as I have spent time in the game, hand cannons just feel good. Each pill of the trigger has intention. The feel of playing with one feels better than any other FPS game I have played. Is it annoying? Only to those that hate playing/dying with them. Saying all of that… I hate strong aim assist, forced metas and the very thin pool of weapons that negates most of the world loot pool. There are viable options in each category.. just have to play and pair everything appropriately and a lot of trial and error.
