The reason Elites in halo CE have blue blood is because they have two hearts.
Human blood is red because hemoglobin, which is carried in the blood and functions to transport oxygen, is iron-rich and red in color.
Elites, having two hearts, don’t need hemoglobin so their blood stays blue.

I always just thought it was because they're blueberry flavored.

Edited by Pie: 3/12/2021 7:12:06 PMThat might not be 100% accurate and I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain.
🙄
....huh?

Aliens don’t have to conform to human biology. But if they did, why would having two hearts mean the blood suddenly doesn’t have to carry oxygen around the body? I’m no expert but oxygen has to get from the lungs to the rest of the body somehow, so unless Elites breathe through their skin then it has to be carried by the blood to the various parts of the body, indicating a need for haemoglobin, regardless of the amount of hearts there are. Unless there is something specific about their blood that means it can transport oxygen without haemoglobin, or there is a haemoglobin-like substance that just is blue rather than red, but they both lead back to my point that aliens don’t need to conform to human biology. What probably happened is that the designers made an aesthetic decision and then the marketing team decided to make it look like a well-thought-through process instead of a generic “hurr durr aloen blud iz blue an green” one.

4 RepliesMore likely scenario they picked blue just because. Grunts breath methane which makes no sense at all because methane is not an oxidizer.

4 RepliesCan we get a hematologist in here to fact check? Mb even a phlebotomist? I think as others have pointed out, blue is just a cool color. I still speed run CE so I have to double check but I think their (Elites) blood might be purple or a darker shade of blue. I know grunts have blue blood for sure. Do they have two hearts as well?

what exactly is the correlation between two hearts and blue blood. how is this a detail?
-
2 RepliesI'd assume an oxygen binding protein similar to hemocyanin would give the oxidized blood its blue color because oxygen still needs to be bound to blood cells for transportation throughout the circulatory system. Whether or not there are multiple hearts is irrelevant. Earthworms have five pairs of heart-like circulatory pumps and their blood is red due to erythrocruorin. You may read more into the subject by Googling respiration, respiratory pigments, circulation, globins, and metalloproteins if you are interested in delving a bit deeper. Most of it should be reliable since it's not been perverted by politicization unlike COVID-19. It's not radically changed over the course of a few months and flooded with disinformation from all sides.
-
Well that doesnt really make sense cause they still need oxygen right?
-
1 Replyand the reason there’s no blood in halo 4 or 5 is because people have one heart but the new games have no soul

Uhhh. Sure I'm not a professional but I don't think 2 hearts makes you not need hemoglobin.
-
Actually, I think the Elites had blue blood because Rule of Cool. You can have multiple blood pumps (hearts) but you’d still need a protein to transport oxygen molecules to your individual cells...

I think they made that after the fact
