Is anthem really that bad?
Anthem really gets a bad wrap, but I played through almost the entire campaign and I don’t see the issue everyone has. Sure, the story could be better written and the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more, but the gameplay rules.

They should have leaned more on the open world for post game replay value but instead it’s just a “match” with 4 players but there’s nothing all that compelling to do. I look forward to see how the overhaul they’re currently working on turns out.

Know that the story is literally the only content in the game. Aside from the equivalent of 3 strikes from Destiny for the endgame. And all the weapons are basically the same. Gameplay is amazing though, and the game looks glorious, but that’s the only good thing about it

If you’re a scrub casual like me and just enjoy a simple campaign as space Iron Man then yes; Anthem is great. Hopefully the reboot update will actually make it a great game for all!!! [spoiler]Sorry, all out of salt.[/spoiler]

The gameplay is ok; but really all it came down to in combat was gunning down bullet sponge enemies, the power combos made that better, but even that feedback loop became repetitive. It was fun, heats my ps4 to the surface of the sun, but it is fun... just very mediocre in its execution; and it reeks of EA managing it. lots of bugs, connection issues, and it just had not enough substance to drive it forward- it was trying to be mecha alien destiny, but you got a big publisher like EA who rushed a historically poorly run developer, with ridiculous timetables and... it was a hot underwhelming and unfinished mess... the final boss- [spoiler]a total tease, started out awesome, then you fight him in a grey room, then a green room and then a red room, and he dies... very little difference between the instances.[/spoiler]

4 RepliesIt’s not terrible, it’s just mediocre in my opinion. The flying is fun (although I hate the cool down mechanic). The shooting feels bad though - like your bullets have no impact. Using your skills is fun though. Overall I found the story really predictable and poorly integrated into the gameplay. The game for me was fun for a few hours but got really repetitive. By the time I finished the main campaign I was well and truly bored with it. And for a game that’s meant to have a lengthy “end game” you want to play for hundreds of hours that’s bad. I haven’t touched it since it released. It may be better now I don’t know.

Nah it's a fun game. Not what it was hyped to be by any means, but if you can get past that its fine.

No, it wasn't that bad, it was just a victim of the hype and promises that the developers made themselfs. It is an enjoyable game and would have been seen as decent but lacking if it "just" released. But it was Bioware's next big thing and thus expectations were high and they did not meet. I played it and enjoyed it but it was norhing special like we expected it would be therefore it failed.

1 Reply[i]It’s not an awful game, which is part of the reason why a lot of people are so hard on it. It’s hard to play Anthem without mourning the squandered potential of the IP. The flying, the shooting, and the abilities are fun fun play around with. The 4 Javelins feels unique, which is good. When I stopped playing, the loot selection was woeful, and the whole entire way loot worked felt unsatisfyingly ( you had to wait until returning to Fort Tarsis to get any loot ). The world of Anthem is vast and beautiful, it’s also a pain to navigate in multiplayer ( 1 character rushes ahead, and another person isn’t moving fast enough ) and can feel very samey due to a lack of bio-diversity in its various regions. I liked ( most of ) the NPC’s, although a lot the quests and missions felt very basic. You ( I ) definitely expect more from BioWare. Same with the story, which was okay ( especially for a games as a service game, think Destiny quality story telling ), but because it’s a BioWare game, you expect more. The End Game is virtually non existent, so it fails as a Game as a Service game. But I feel it works well as 10 hour action/adventure, third person shooter game.[/i]

Yes, it is that bad. The story has no intrigue and there's no incentive to keep grinding after you knock out the main campaign. The combat and movement mechanics are great but the game doesn't come [i]anywhere close[/i] to being as good as it should be. You need more than gameplay in a loot grinder.
