Luke Smith destroys his own MtG analogy with weapon re-issuing.

Now, I've never played Magic but I do sometimes play the Pokemon TCG for fun, and I believe the formats work the same. TCGs rotate out cards every year, which brings in new cards from new sets and rotates out the older sets. This lets them make new cards without having to worry about op combos with older cards (Shiftry and Forest of Giant Plants lol). The "weapons as a deck of cards analogy" falls apart at even this basic level however. I'm not comboing (if that's a word) my weapons with each other. My Astral Horizon isn't giving a damage boost to my Gnawing Hunger. My Spare Rations isn't giving my Apostate infinite ammo. Weapons exist as they're own separate... entities, if that makes sense. Some of these new perks do work kind of like that (namely Sympathetic Arsenal) but it's not really the same thing. And now on to the re-issuing. TCGs periodically re-release old cards, whether as a legacy set or as a part of a new set. However, ANY OLD VERSIONS OF THOSE CARDS ARE STILL USABLE. My Professor's Letter from 8 years ago is still usable in the Standard Format. There are some cards from 20+ years ago that could be used again if new versions of them were released. Destiny fails miserably at this. My new Night Watch with Rapid Hit and Explosive Payload is exactly the same as my old Night Watch with the EXACT SAME ROLL. The only difference is a fancy sticker and an arbitrary power number dictating how long you get to use it. And to add insult to injury, these "new" weapons have the same perk pool as the old ones, not even a refreshed perk pool. The old weapons NEED to be infusable into the new ones. TLDR: The MtG analogy doesn't work based on Bungie's recent actions.

  • I’m not saying this out of support of sun setting, but to be fair, mtg does the same thing. Sometimes historically rebreaking the meta by accident when they bring back old cards

    • Luke Smith is completly incompetent. He keeps trying to make this game like other games that are nothing like this. Magic, mmo's... Destiny got some mmo elements but you can't compare it to real mmo's. Problem with L.S. is that he's not capable of seeing Destiny as a game in it's own right and trying to build on that world from that standpoint. Seeing the potential the game has and to bring that to the surface. He's not creative ore good enough to steer this game into a right direction for THIS game. So he just tries to copy what other games do not seeing what it's doing to this game and this community. That's a lack of quality as a game director. No ideas of your own. Try to do what other games do. He's not a real gamedirector. He's a gaming journalist. The wrong leadership is killing this game. It's completly mindboggling how Bungie put this man in this seat and still keeps him there.

        • Here's the thing about analogies in a business sense: They're cheap attempts to fool people. Just marketing smoke and mirrors. You should never use an analogy that not everyone can relate to. I don't play card games, his comparison means nothing to me.

            • Destiny isn't an MMO. It's not massive, and it doesn't have basic staples of the genre: - a half-dozen or so classes which are in themselves fully customizable - stat-stick gear that you can play specific activities to grind - diverse enough enemy types that each have to be dealt with their own way - semi-frequent massive updates(not just changes and bug fixes) to parts of the game to keep up with player demands - deep and engaging endgame content - a simple leveling system Destiny needs to have its own identity going forward.

              • Using a Magic Card Game reference is the stupidest thing to do in the first place. By using it, Luke is assuming that every Destiny player plays Magic Fun Time and gets his reference. I have been playing Destiny since D1 Beta and I do not get his reference. The only card games I have ever played are with a 52 card suited deck for poker, black jack etc. I don't understand why he is trying to make Destiny like the Magic Get Together or World of Warcraft (Which I've never played either.) I want to play Destiny. If I wanted to play those other games I would just play those other games. I'm so confused, what in the h*ll is going on around here???? ps. I am not knocking anyone who plays Magic or WoW, I just have never played them and have no interest to play them.

                • The MtG analogy never worked. As far as the shit that Luke spews on the regular, the "Weapon Sunsetting = MtG Core Cycles" was an absolutely egregious false equivalency fallacy. It's important to note that MtG cards themselves are recycled for the scummiest reason from the get go: To drive purchases for competitive players. It doesn't matter if you have a card that's still a legal play (Lets just say, for example a Land card). If that card is from an edition X editions older than the current one, it's illegal. The only justification I've seen for this that isn't absolute BS is the arguement that it makes cheating more apparent as snuck in cards that are of age are easily spotted, but that's shakey from the get go considering just how strictly monitored paying tournaments are. Anyway, the thing that lets MtG, and indeed other TCGs, get away with this scummy tactic is that the games are physical products that have value and thus, older cards that can't be played to still have some merit in being collected as they will inevitably be worth something to re-sell (I need not remind anyone of the price of a 1st edition Black Lotus, however one sold for $166k last year.) and thus aren't an entire waste of money post-relevance. However, Destiny's Guns are not physical and have no value beyond what a player assigns them internally. Without a trading system implemented, a gun is only valuable if it is (1: Usable in gameplay. (2: Viable in the game's META. Outside of those two points, all guns are worthless in Destiny, unless you personally assign them sentimental value. When Wizards of The Coast de-legalize (Work with me here.) cards, those cards do still have an inherent value as collectors items, casual play items and, eventually, valuable assests for resale. Because of this, the owner of the cards still has something of inherent value for the money spent on the cards. When BUNGiE Sunsets a piece of equipment that item is entirely devalued in any sense that isn't applied on an individual basis. You now have an active detriment in your inventory taking up space with data that no longer has any use beyond nostalgia. The player has nothing to show for their time and effort aside from an inventory/Vault slot that is being filled by something is now entirely irrelevant to their gameplay. And now that Luke is doing the exact thing everyone knew would happen: Forcing players to grind for nigh exact replicas of old guns, even the value of nostalgia is gone, as the new item is identical to the old one save a symbol on it's inventory icon and maybe a slight variation on it's in-game performance. It's been a debunked argument since the snake spoke the words.

WotC made a promise to their players to uphold the non reprint list 25 years ago and has never gone back on it. Weather it’s good or bad for the game they made a promise to their player base and have held it for a quarter of a decade. Bungie made a promise to respect our time that lasted 3 years. If anything I bet WotC hates this stupid analogy more than anyone. Both being Seattle based companies. I bet you my alternate 4th Volcanic Island that as soon as they heard about the analogy they wanted Bungie to stfu. Aka Deej =\= Maro

                  • The fact that some reissued weapons are the exact same rolls is certainly the most infuriating part for me. If it came with new/different perks then yes, I could see a reason to grind for new rolls. But the exact same rolls? -blam!- off, just let me infuse my older weapon up to the new light cap if that's the case.

I'm not here to add anything. I don't know anything about Magic Cards. All I know is I've been playing this game since the beginning. 6 year Destiny vet since beta. I'm not here to complain. I am one of the guys who doesn't agree with Sunsetting. Again, not here to complain. Just expressing my thoughts on the game. This is also kind of a farewell. That's right. I'm quitting the game. I did 2 weeks ago. Paid in full for this last season. Waiting for something big to happen. But nothing. Instead, I've experienced this thing called Sunsetting. Got some new guns from the Umbral engrams and some old recycled guns from everyehere. And I knew exactly right off the bat what sunsetting is all about. And I don't like it at all. Have an open mind and put emotions aside when you read this. Look at the bigger picture. This is the first time this type of Sunsetting occurred in this game. No, it didn't happen before in D1. Didn't happen before when D2 started. Never had this kind of sunsetting where we had a specific time for our guns to be viable in an end game activity before. This is the first time there is a power limit number located in our guns when it is viable to use for end game seasons. And this is the first time it has a 1 year life cycle, in short a shelf life. Here are some of the reasons why this is happening. Again, disperse emotions first and keep an open mind. Sunsetting is a "Red Herring." A red herring is a literary device that can be used at any instance by anyone for the purpose of something that misleads or distracts from a relevant or important argumentation. It may be a logical argument that leads readers or audiences toward a false conclusion. In short, they say this but they're actually doing this as well. They say they don't want to make a D3 yet and reset all your gear. But they are actually still resetting your gear. Only in a different way. They used the reason not to make D3 so they won't reset gear because they know there will be a backlash again at them bringing all Exotics back again, regrinding their gear again. So they said they won't do that. That's the "Red Herring" right there. They conditioned your mind that your gonna get something better. Lol. You're not. They're gonna give you something similar. A watered down version of a reset instead. I'm not finished with this, I'll continue at the end of this. Here's another "Red Herring" argument they throw at you. We are doing sunsetting because of powercreep. That's a red herring because it's both true and false. Sunsetting is not about powercreep. There is no powercreep problem. You know why?. . . Because there will always be powercreep "PRESENT" in the game! Powercreep is built into the system of the game. It always is present. It always has been since the game came out 6 years ago. It's called a Metagame. When you introduce a Meta in a game, that itself promotes powercreep. These 2 things go hand in hand together. That's the essence of this game. When you discover a gun is powerful in this game, you will use that gun all the time. Why?. . . Because it is efficient. When you see a much better roll, you will do everything to get it, promote it, and then use it all the time. Because it is "EFFICIENT!" That's what you call having a Meta and powercreep together at the same time. Sunsetting doesn't change that. If you really know Destiny and you've been playing this game really well. This is still going to happen. The only difference is that they control what the Meta is. They can do that because it only lasts for 1 year. Gears that becomes Meta and has a tendency for powercreep only lasts for 1 year now. They control that, so they control their artificial creativity. Which is giving you the same powerful guns that you feel are new creations but really aren't. That's their solution for their creative gun problem. They cannot give you exceedingly powerful guns over and over all the time. It will break the game. So they decided to control it and give it a life cycle. Just to reintroduce a variety of different guns that are just as equal as the ones you've had before. They may look different and have different archetypes. But they will just have the same effect as the ones you've had before. Different carrot, but they all tastes the same. Now that they control that, so they also control you. You are going to be in this perpetual hamster wheel over and over seasonally and yearly. But now they are dangling different looking carrots in front of you, but when you eat it, they all tastes the same, over and over. That's what the new Destiny is all about now. It's gonna happen and it will happen. Its the "NEW" Destiny! This is the Destiny that should have been when it started 6 years ago. If this was happening 6 years ago. This would have established what this game is all about. And I would have still left after the first year of it. Because by then, I would have understood what the game was all about and would easily take it as the game that's not for me. But it took 6 years to get it here. And we are now in this situation. This is the NEW Destiny. And its gonna run for the next 3 years. I'm saying goodbye now to this game because of that reason. Destiny has always been a game about grind. I stuck with it not because I like grinding but because I love the excitement of the activities. Without the grind, Destiny is a really fun game. But with this sunsetting BS, they took grinding to another level and put a choke hold on you while they do you from behind while holding your neck and pulling your hair and as you look back behind you a slobbering bearded guy is yelling "Throw your effing money on the Screen!!!" Okay, maybe it's not just one guy. Yes, he may be in charge of the game but it's all of them that made and agreed on this decision. It's a company, and whatever happens to the game, they are all responsible for this change. Okay, now that's done. Some people asks me, So what's your solution then?. . . How the heck should I know. I don't have an effing solution! If I do, I wouldn't be here, I would be making my own games and playing it. That's the problem here, everyone thinks they have a solution and Devs would implement that and make them heroes. Look where it got the game when Devs listens to all of that BS?. . . If I'm a Chef, I won't let anybody touch my famous recipe, and I will make my own special sauce. I will do that over and over without anyone's influence until I become a Master of it and no one would interfere with it. It's my own creation! I thought that's how this works. I don't have a solution. I'm a gamer, and I love playing fun and exciting games. Don't ask me what to do with the game. Make me one! Impress me with your talent!!! Again, I apologize for the wall of text. This is not an argument. It's just an opinion. And a farewell. You don't need to argue, and I don't need to argue either. This is the NEW Destiny. I accept that. I opened my eyes and realized what this game is becoming to be. And I'm saying goodbye. No regrets. I am moving on. If you see me here in the interwebs, I'm just here to party! Cheers Everyone!!!

                    • I am a tournament level mtg player and his analogy made me cringe. We have multiple competitive types of mtg the one that only previous 2 seasons of cards are usable is called standard and is the "noob" mode. Sure tgere are high level pro players of this format but the effort to keep up switching decks every 3 months is expensive and stressfull. Once you build up your card collection you can move to the "etermal" formats where all cards bar a banned list are valid. Modern takes any card from 8 season to present day and legacy takes any card ever. Those are the funniest and with the most wide ammount of different decks and strategies and I was a player of both but not of the "noob" standard for those reasons. Now Luke wants destiny to emulate the least fun and most simple format and call it a good analogy. He is trying to justify this BS.

No. Some have already boarded the Europa hype train since I've seen the preorder emote in the tower. I am sorry to say but unless"The Community, as a whole" bands together and acts accordingly, with their wallets, nothing will ever change and the game will be an endless recycle. That is why, I too have decided to move on after this season which I paid for. There are better games out there, that respect player investment

                                • Destiny does have many similarities to deck building games. creating a build, choosing your exotics, min-maxing your stat distribution, slotting your mods, and choosing the right weapons is just like building a deck of magic the gathering cards.

                                • Magic the gathering is guilty as hell for reprinting cards that either just rotated out or are about to. They’re typically found in the core set for a block. Not advocating for bungie here, just letting those that know nothing about magic understand. Also the reason why magic gets a pass on this is because every expansion adds NEW content where the new cards are front and center while the reprints are just considered minor deck staples.
