Trials of Osiris - Player Population Decline and what has to change to bring you back in.

Here is the facts about the relaunched Trials and it’s weekly player population. Keep in mind that Trials is available for 4 out of 7 days a week so more days than it is not. Week 1 - 380k players. Week 2 - 340k players (-10% from launch). Week 3 - 300k players (-20% from launch). Edit: Week 4 - 278k players (-27% from launch). I don’t think that’s insignificant. I also don’t think it’s the end times. It’s clear that players aren’t returning to it in a way I would hope for to see it breathing new life into the game. What I wonder is: What would have to change in the playlist to get players to want to play? Personally I went flawless in D1/Trials of the Nine, and I’m sure I will again with the relaunched, but with a low player population and teams resetting passage of wealth to win 1 over and over I found the playlist to be not fun. I played some the first couple weeks but never even tried this week.

  • Bungie's response: We have found false evidence of player population in activities so we will be sending seace and desist orders for all population and weapon usage trackers to be taken off websites. Anyone remember when they did that before, bet they will do it again or focus on another celebrity/streamer to waste the time and energy of a TWAB.

    • So the trails were no fun at all. That was the worst of the whole year. Every start round against unbroken or flawless players I don't want to play and two rounds later you have the three types with over 20 flawless titles. That can't be why not introduce freelance like survival ??????

      • Pinnacle weapons for the guys that can go flawless. Bounties and tokens for the rest of us that we can cash in for weapons and armour.

        • I know something that would work but they would never do it. Once you go flawless on that character it is locked out of trials. Change it so loot comes from bounties.

Population next week is going to be horrible. Unless the map is amazing and the 3 win reward is the class item or sniper. Either way the top 1% has basically cannibalized the reminding 99% and killed trials of Osiris.

                • I played the first week. Got to 4 wins and was able to turn in my tokens. I started the second week and with 4 different LFG teams, I couldn’t get to 3 wins. Couldn’t turn in my tokens and gave up. I doubt I play again. It just isn’t worth the time. Especially if there is no changes to the way we turn in tokens.

                  • Flawless: adept gear. Get to choose your reward from the chest. Guaranteed enhancement prisms. Armour ornaments. Tokens: Can be cashed in without a win requirement. You earn more the more wins on your card, so much so that losing at game 4-7 gives you more at winning at games 1-3. Bounties: Weekly bounties award gear as well as tokens for those players who may not be experienced enough in the game mode to win very much or at all. Other benefits: Trials always offers double Valor XP.

                      • The way I see i the three main issues are 1) Cheating, 2) Players resetting wealth tickets for token farming 3) Flawless players being paired with non Flawless. What I would recommend to help in these issues are: Cheating- Now in some cases it's pretty obvious when cheating is going on. This past weekend my team dealt with one such cheater. Checking his power level, this player was only 965, while our team was all past 995. Despite the power difference however, this player took no damage from any of our weapons. We would get the hit markers, but he would still retain full health. He would also take us down in only one hit from his bow no matter the status of our health. After not a single won round, we lost the match and used up our mercy. This was an obvious case of cheating, but other games we just dealt with bad connection that eventually kicked the enemy team. I use those examples because I recognize some cases of cheating may only seem like it to one side, but it's a simple case of bad luck. Yet you may never know because there's never any follow up. If I report someone on PSN, I get a ticket number to track the status of said report. I know when they receive it, when they review it, and when they settle it. I never know what exactly has happened, but I know my concerns were noted. With Bungies report system, for all I know its just a button to be pressed. I'm not saying I need to know the outcome of the investigation, but messages such as "gameplay being reviewed" would help. Of course, if such a system were implemented, messages could also include "previous gameplay still not reviewed, disregard for current issue" could be implemented so as not to backlog Bungie, and a "limit" could be implemented for how many reports you can give in x amount of times before you get flagged for "crying wolf". Eventually you could lose reporting privilege if you keep reporting, just to dissuade reporting someone because you missed your shot. That being said, I recognize that's probably not a feasible option, and would be welcome to more communication to how the reporting process is handled. Token Farming- Now on the surface this is an understandable thing. If you're not interested in the rocket, only a good Summoner, why risk expanding your loot pool? The only issue is that there are some other players NOT very skilled in PvP just trying for three wins to build their loot pool. Now before anyone goes "git gud", I understand that Trials is endgame PvP, but the whole idea is that you keep building up wins for Flawless, so the better players slowly climb up while the less skilled stay in their own pool. But being able to reset a ticket goes against that idea, like a professional NFL players deciding they want to return to a Youth league. I think there are a number of ways to fix this. One is of course more desirable loot as things get farther down the line (Imagine a Summoner but you can choose between different perks to play with like ritual weapons) Another, simpler option, is to give more tokens per wins (After 3 wins you go from 2 to 5 tokens, after 5 Wins 5 to 10) Give an incentive to keep going. Finally, lock out being able to reset a card until your first loss. This is a less than ideal because it would only help 1 out of 6 teams (when the better team threw a match) Flawless- This final one is simple enough. Create a "bracket" where once you go Flawless THAT WEEKEND, you are placed into a "Flawless Only" league. There players can farm for tokens, or really go against the best teams. It would also make a Flawless Passage of Confidence much more impressive, thus heightening the prestige of the Flawless seal. My two cents

                        • Are you estimating? Where's your source data from? Just curious cause it seems odd to throw numbers around claiming a -10% weekly player loss without a player data source.
