(From when I first heard it)
A man is walking on a highway
It’s cold
Something smells warm
He’s tired and needs rest, when up ahead he spots a light
He meets a girl, she leads him to a hotel
The hotel is haunted
He tries to ignore it by using alcohol
He finds the girl in a room with mirrors on the ceiling
She states that “We are all just prisoners here of our own device”
The hotel is still haunted
The other residents of the hotel along with the man, “gather for a feast” in which they “stab it with their steely knives, but they just can’t kill the beast” with the beast being a grotesque hideous monster. (Thinking along the lines of resident evil type)
The man wants to escape after seeing this
Guards stop him, apparently robotic, judging by the line, “Programmed to receive”
And someone appears on the top of a staircase like a movie villain. My assumption was a mad scientist, who says these words.
“You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave”
Thus this man is never heard from again.
Or he could just be tripping on colitas (drug)
The Hotel California represents either a seedy motel with -blam!-, Drugs and all around hedonism, or a brothel. The words are not meant to be taken literally, or maybe they are... "Relax said the Nightman, we are programmed to receive" The Nightman/Master may be a reference to drug dealers or pimps that are only out to make money at the expense, health and life of users. The line "you can check out any time you like but you can never leave" may refer to the way heroin addicts "check out" and get trapped in a cycle of addiction they "can never leave". "They stab it with their steely knives" (may refer to needles) "but they just can't kill the beast" (may refer to trying to keep the pain of withdrawal away; something that- when you are addicted to an opiate- is commonly referred to as "chasing the dragon" or the "beast" "mirrors on the ceiling" was a style of design in some ritzier motels, and if they appear in a place like the Hotel California, it may symbolize the glamourous veneer that covers rock star status, hiding the dark heart beneath, further obscured by the amenities provided "pink campagne on ice". "On a dark desert highway... Warm smell of Colita's"- colitas is a slang term for marijuana (or buttocks- but the former is more pleasant and makes more sense)- this may be a reference to the endless nights on tour, smoking weed and trying to stay sane over weeks driving through the desert- "Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light" - may refer to the introduction of the protagonist in the story to hard drugs, like coke and heroin, "a shimmering light" in an otherwise hard time. "My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I'd have to stop for the night" -could refer to the moment, they made the decision to give it a try. The song is highly allegorical or at least symbolic, in my opinion, of the Rockstars who lost their lives and livelihoods to vices while living on the road. EDIT "Then she lit up a candle, and she showed me the way" may refer to the method for preparing a hypodermic dose of Heroin, heating a mixture of the drug and other components in a spoon with a candle, to "cook" a dose. "Such a lovely place, such a lovely face" - might refer to the sex drugs and rock and roll lifestyle as just a lovely face, implying its rotten unerneath. "Any time of year, you can find it here" "Her mind is Tiffany twisted" Tiffany and Co, has a ritzy line of jewelry called Tiffany twist, implying this h00ker or addict is a casualty of the envy she had for the high-life and she's now a mentally unstable mess. "she's got a lot of pretty pretty boys that she calls 'friends'" coz she's a h00ker and/or a cokewh0re, and she's attractive, so she can get her fix whenever she wants.
