Currently it sits at a 40-60% chance reduction of getting the flu with a vaccine. Not great, but not terrible.

I don’t get it at all. I’m mortally terrified of needles so my parents just let me get the flu. I do pull through ok but last year I got both the A strand and the B strand, so I think I’m safe this year.

I’m fine. When I get frail I will

I don't generally get those cause they have a pretty low effectiveness rate. But I'm def on board with other vaccines
-
I almost never take the flu shot. Mostly because I got sick when I took it first.

5 RepliesFear is a powerful motivator. I really do not understand why there is more fear mongering over flu vaccinations than staying up to date on boosters. I suppose a factor is that the flu vaccine, a best guess cocktail, is needed every year while boosters are needed every several years, even though things like tetanus and hepatitis-C are much scarier diseases than the flu. My parents never had us get the flu vaccine. My grandmother had my mother and uncles vaccinated one year. They never had issues with the flu until that year. They were all terribly sick. They were never again vaccinated. My father never recieved the flu vaccine. He had no issues with the flu. I don't think his family's doctor had it available anyway. I've never had any issues. Rest is very key to keeping a good immune system. That's all I ever need to recover from nasty colds and the flu, a day or two to do nothing but sleep. Even for food poisoning, sleep is necessary. I spent a week doing nothing but sleeping to get over a case of food poisoning. Surgery too, sleep is necessary. I did nothing but sleep for three days after my abdominal surgery. I started weening off the pain pills after the second day. I was able to go back to work a several days early and the surgeon constantly remarked on my fast recovery. I still complained that I was not recovering fast enough. Just from my own experience, rest is more beneficial than medicine alone. I'm glad my parents made me stay in bed if I was "too sick" to go to school. I've also noticed that I'm more prone to illness when I'm sleep deprived. There are people that believe HIV is a hoax and the HIV related deaths are due to the medicine treatment rather than the disease it treats. Supposedly, the symptoms of those suffering HIV can be cured by lifestyle changes, in which implementing a regular sleep schedule is key. I really don't know whether or not it's true. I will admit that I do not like the idea of HIV being a hoax (interestingly, I feel a bit offended by the accusation), though it is something I need to eventually explore because it does agree with my own experience with sleep deprivation and illness.
