Please clarify the armor situation for Shadowkeep

Mr. Tassi once again brings up some interesting points and is unfortunately presenting the first worry I have about Shadowkeep and year 3 gear; https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2019/06/26/destiny-2-needs-to-be-clear-about-the-deal-with-year-1-and-2-armor-in-year-3/#f06fd7479497 Year 2 essentially obsoleted year 1 armor in the game. This was a bummer for me and a lot of people because one of the best looking and last armor sets one could earn in year 1 was the summer of solstice armor and accompanying ornaments, but that armor became useless just a couple months later when Forssaken came out and changed up armor. We know there's a change coming in year 3, but I think the announcement of a sort of transmog system of some type has lead many people to believe we will essentially be able to skin any armor set there has been on to a set of perks. Mr. Tassi notes that reading between the lines of what we've seen so far it is looking like this may really only apply to armor sets that were sold through Eververse. This would potentially mean year 3 gear is going to obsolete most year 2 gear. If that's true I am super bummed because I'm just about able to start work on the Menagerie set and will be none too pleased to find it's useless a month or two after I get it. What has always had me suspicious of this that Mr. Tassi also touches on is how some year 1 stuff reappears as updated versions. The Exodus Down set, Mida-mini, Drang. Better Devils, etc. I've always wondered why Bungie didn't simply update the gear to the current system rather than bring a year 2 version of the gear. Is it because they basically can't for some technical reason? Lastly while Bungie should clarify this, if it's true there's a good chance they won't. Because to confirm these suspicions is to basically tell people it's not worth grinding for that raid gear or that menagerie gear because it's going to be obsolete come September. Never the less..... BUNGIE, PLEASE CLARIFY!

So does this basically answer my question? Now it does indeed appear all year 1 and 2 armor is going to be junk and will not be updated to utilize armor 2.0. https://www.bungie.net/en/Explore/Detail/News/48006

Year 1 gear can take mods, but has no support for random rolls Year 2 gear takes mods, has random rolls, but can't accept Transmog or new systems That's how it'll go likely. What we don't know is if Year 3 gear will have perks Year 2 gear can't roll.

  • LordD2 You make some valid points and i agree that eververse must be removed from this game but, Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather, he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank just outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold

  • Let me address these points: Year 2 making year 1 gear obsolete is a stretch. They are perfectly usable. You can infuse them to max light and add mods. There is nothing stopping me from using my Flawless trials armor in end-game content when I want to, and I reguarlarly do so. Obsolete is far from the truth and would apply to Destiny 1 but not Destiny 2. D1 had weapons and armor you physically COULD NOT infuse into max light so they were eseentially unsable. This is not the case in D2... now if you want to say that year 2 gear can no longer be "min maxed" to its full potential, you would have a point, but there are valid reasons for this. The reason old gear often gets left behind is because there needs to be an incentive for new gear. If old gear has the exact same system and perks as new gear, why would anyone bother using new gear? They already have perfectly rolled gear they spent time on. So there needs to be some other incentive, right? For example new perks or somthing of that nature, somthing you can get on new armor which you cant on old armor. But this perk doesnt just need to be different, it needs to be better , else why would you use it? So now youve just invented what is known as power creep. Gear gets more power due to the need for incentives and thus content becomes easier. We've already seen this happen, I mean just look at raid bosses. Once the epitome of end-game, they now get 1-phased in seconds even on day 1. This is due to powercreep. Now there are some ways to deal with powercreep but they arent all good ways. For example you could raise the boss health. People are killing bosses too fast, all youd need to do is raise health right? Well no; due to powercreep, only certain gear is getting stronger, not all gear. All youre doing by raising both health is furthering the gap between old and new gear, making it more useless than it already was. The other option is to buff older gear, which does happen, but then raises the original problem of why have new gear in the first place then? Which leaves us with the decision to leave old gear behind and not support it, this is what happened in D1 which subsequently made new gear very sought after and content that little more challenging and engaging. People always say "d1 has the best raids, the loot was great" and theyd be right in many ways, the loot was worth getting because previous gear was not usable and thus they could design each gun to be more powerful than regular gear, but not more powerful than say last raids gear because that gear cannot be used. This doesnt eliminate powercreep, but it controls it and is one of the reasons why d2's system hasnt really worked. I do think they should clarify which armor will be changed, how it will work and what the new system will really be like, but keep in mind why they might do certain things and how this could affect the game as a whole.

Based on the (albeit limited) information I've gathered from the vidoc, interviews, and my own educated speculation, I believe (and hope) armor will work as follows: Armor perks will now be "slotted" into armor very similar to how mods work. So if you pick up a helmet with the "Ashes to Assets" perk, you may dismantle it to gain an "Ashes to Assets" armor mod. Each armor piece will have a collection of mod slots, which you may freely slot in any of the mods you have available. When you pull an armor piece from collections, it arrives as a sort of "frame", with all its slots open for customization. This would be balanced, of course, by having certain perks only compatible with certain types of pieces. For instance, you can never slot a "Hand Cannon Loader" mod into your boots. This would be great because it means all armor will be able to be pulled from collections, as you'll only get a blank frame. We'll be able to wear anything we want, while still applying useful perks to it.

        • I’m sure it was pretty clear.... All Eververse armor will be turned into Ornaments for newly acquired Legendary gear. Meaning you will be able to change the look of any cruddy looking new Legendary gear you acquire come September 17th into the looks of whatever Eververse set you want it to look like as long as you have that armor in your purchases.

            • Bungie will only talk about this when their marketing team tells them that the hype window is open, otherwise they have zero interest in communication with customers. Whatever system they'll come up with you can rest assured that it will be yet another currency sink, probably also requiring enhancement cores for every single mod we apply to armor. Bungie always makes sure that any change that sounded good on paper ends up -blam!-ing players over, or it will be borderline useless, e.g. the "great" collections feature that got invalidated by random perks. It's crazy how excited ppl still get over little to no information on upcoming features, especially with Bungie's track record of overpromising and underdelivering.

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Im not buying Shadowkeep right off the bat and waiting. I still dont have faith in them. Dont get wrong the content updates have been pretty good. Buuuuuut Forsaken was an expansion that essentially made Destiny 2, Destiny 1 again. I just hope they keep pushing forward with stuff like menagerie and maybe at least add nightfall matchmaking.

              • In the vidoc they showed all 3 classes switching between a bunch of different armor sets, so I’m assuming that it won’t just be the eververse armor that you can transmog.

              • I think the no answer is all the answer we need. They've been very deliberate about side stepping it in communication. All we know is eververse is only compatible with new armour, so it's not a stretch to think it's the same for all of it.

              • Regrettably, I don’t see this happening because Bungo is worried half the community will leave until Shadowkeep and the other half will hoard materials, giving them an “advantage” going into Shadowkeep.

                  • Bungie will find a way to make us start over with blues and work our way up. And they could easily do this by making mods on year 2 legendary gears worthless. I don't think it's just going to be armor that becomes obsolete. It will be year two weapons on the chopping block too.

                  • If the armor piece is in my collection, I should be able to use it for transmog. Period. I absolutely loved the Solstice armor from last year. I was equally dismayed when it became utterly useless a few weeks later. If this is going to repeat for this year, what is the point of grinding out the gear? If Bungie plans on re-releasing old armor sets with Y3 perks just to get us to grind out the whole set again, they are fools, and here is why: Let's say you get a god roll on a Crucible helm. Then later you get a god roll on a pair of boots in a strike. And at some point down the line, you get that super lucky god roll on patrol. That's great that you can mix and match armor pieces from different activities, based upon the luck of RNG, but to then have to look like a freakin' clown because nothing you wear matches? No Thanks. And of course I realize you can use EV ornaments (and there are some really great sets out there) but why have such narrow limits? The EV armor is a great first step, and I'm thrilled that Bungie is finally moving in the direction of customizable looks, but they need to take it all the way.

                    • If history tells us anything then the only reason to grind a darn thing right now is in order to feel like you got your money's worth from the Annual Pass. The truly smart play would be to not spend another dime on Bungie content until September 2020. Between now and then play Borderlands. I've got more money than brains so I'll buy ShadowKeep hoping that this time Bungie will finally prove me wrong.

                    • I do enjoy some of the cosmetics of the older armor, but not enough to slot them and bring them up to light over something with perks. All they really need to do is turn old armor into ornaments. It'd be something extra to grind for and more incentive to do it. I know people have been asking for updated planetary npc items but I don't see that happening ever.

                      • Does everyone not relize that the eververse change is only for bungie to sell more items? Items in eververse come at 10 light. You have to infuse them to get them higher. With Bungie saying that you need to make smart infusion decisions, and you're not supposed to infuse as you go, this makes selling a $11 outfit not a good investment until you're max light. Most people impulse buy and want to use something right away. The current infussion sysetm does not help them achieve this. Who want's to buy an outfit to sit in their locker until you hit the current light level or waste all your cores infusing as you level up 1-3 light ? I thought the Titan armor looked pretty cool and might have bought it the day ot came out, but I'm not spending $11 to wait to get to 750 light. Now that it's been a few weeks, I've hit 750, but my Menagerie gear looks pretty cool, so my impulse to buy the eververse gear is gone. So now, bungie acts like their doing us all this huge favor by making eververse gear ornaments to put on any Legendary. It's so they can sell us more outfits! Now, it doesn't matter what Legandary you get as you level up, you can just move the ornament around and alway's have your eververse gear without spending cores, shards, glimmer, and planetary materials. This way, we have no excuse to not spend our money! *** Note, they found a way to not remove cores, wich pretty much everyone wants, and found a way to benefit them and make money... pretty smart I guess

                        • It would be very nice for them to clarify this, my Titan is currently dressed in year 1 crucible gear because I feel that this is the best looking Titan gear we have ever had in D2. Plus I would really like to use the New Monarchy gear on my Hunter but again I would have to sacrifice random rolls in order to wear it! It is a shame that I have to put up with only the standard perks that this gear comes with, I have used some amour mods in order to bring it a little more up to date but would still love it if I could get some random rolls on it! The only thing I have equipped that does have a random role on it is the Helm of Saint 14. As the OP stated please clairfy this Bungie, would be a massive shame if we grinded for all this gear and as usual it becomes useless once Shadowfall hits!
