1 ReplyNo. Activision basically bankrolled the franchise in exchange for exclusive publishing rights AND a percentage of either the revenue or profits for 10 years. IOW, Activision didn't "own" Bungie....but was effectively the "senior" partner in an partnership to create the game. What basically happened last week, is Activision either agreed to let Bungie walk away from the last 2 years of the contract or (more likely) Bungie bought OUT that contract for the last two years at an agreed upon price. Bungie is FIVE TIMES the size it was when it agreed to the deal back in 2010, and is a big enough company to develop and self-publish a game like Destiny at this point. Also---being a company that isn't publicly traded----they are free to pursue QUALITY over quarterly growth. So, all in all, this means more responsibilities....and risk....for Bungie. But a golden opportunity to create the kind of quality experience that they clearly want to make, without having to adhere to the slavish, annualized schedule that these publicly-owned publishers like EA, Activision and Ubisoft whip these studios to maintain.
