Lemme explain the streamer thing

Some forum users don't appear too get it. Bungie held a "community summit". In reality this could have more accurately been called a streamer summit. The whole point of this was to try to inject hype back into the game. Bungie senior management theory is that if streamers are showing your game, then kids and anyone else on the internet who are influenced by what they see other people doing, will pick up/start playing Destiny again. That's the theory. The problem is that streamers had stopped streaming Destiny, so with no streamers, no players (again, Bungie theory). Fast forward to the streamer summit. The offer is simple. Agree to stream Destiny again, and Bungie will make sure that those streamers get unique content to stream that will attract viewers. What this includes I can only speculate, but it could be anything from early access to content, to a head start or even hints on puzzle solutions so that a streamer is more likely to be the first to crack it and thus get more views, rather than some random Joe who'd make a forum post go viral but do nothing for stream viewers. It must have driven Bungie nuts when an unheard of team got the Riven raid first. Anyway, that's why you have the forge the way it is. All part of that streamer summit deal.

  • I've been on this forum for about 4 years now. And something I've noticed is this community loves to hate and find scapegoats. You guys blame why you lost a crucible match on something else, you blame the state of the game on the streamers etc etc And I've never come across a community that so vehemently hates its streamers without any real reason. It's pathetic.

      • I understand why Bungie do this. I don't particularly like streamers as, I agree, Bungie cater far too much for them. The escalation protocol was made much harder on release cos they said it was too easy for them. Well, the game wasn't created solely for them. But Bungie increased the difficulty and everyone complained. The niobe labs quest was solely built for them to decipher. This is s fact. Bungie devs were giving cryptic messages hinting at a solution to the part they were at. No one else, them. However..... I watched some of xGladd stream and he wasn't a dick. Datto..... yeah, he seemed like an elitist tool. On xGladd stream he had in excess of 30k people watching. When I tried it I had my usual zero people. So of course Bungie are going to cater more for him than me. That's just common sense. The problems arise when Bungie literally does things like they did for niobe labs and block out content that people paid for and make a quest that all the games top players along with the 30k people watching spend over 30 hours trying to decipher a quest that has virtually no in game clues.

        • I don't think the streamers needed hints or a special reward. The even was made specifically for streamers to get views and Bungie even gave shout outs to streamers and encouraged people to watch the streams. That alone is incentive enough for streamers to get involved.

        • So is there any proof of these streamers getting hints for raids/puzzles or contracts to stream Destiny? If so, give me a link to it. What I though the summit was for is to suggest changes to the game. Streamers are some of the most prevalent players in the community so it would just make sense for them to go. They wouldn't just let some random person.

          • That is a very dumb move by Bungie if that is how it happened. Streamers are more competitive and also need fresh topics\content to stream. So by default they are more likely to abuse things, find faults when they lose and find topics of interest to keep views up. That means they do influence those that watch. They will find more issues than they solve and they will look for easier ways to complete content or win. That's not knocking them. It's their job so I get it. But if Bungie just makes a good game streamers will come anyway to get viewers. This sounds like the huge nerf parades of D1. Once you start down the road of doing things to please others you end up making no one happy.

          • They are paid by bungie and they are allowed to glitch the game and lags every pvp match? Oh they also are allowed to cheat to get raid ready.

            • The problem isnt with the streamers, its with the community and their over reliance on streamers. You dont need someone telling you which roll on a Dust Rock Blues is the best. You don't need someone reviwing the Ace of Spades. Now, streamers do have a place in the community. Passing down their knowledge of Raids is pretty acceptable. If someone wants to log in and watch streamers wreck some poor saps in Crucible, thats also accepted. Not something I consider entertainment, but to each their own.

            • I knew I should have stopped reading after “...appear too get it...” Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Streamers aren’t going to be your “scapegoats” forever whenever you’ve got a complaint. You didn’t need to be a streamer to see that Y1 D2 catered to casuals way too hard and killed incentive to play. You don’t have to stream D2 to enjoy it’s content now, it makes literally no difference. The content for D2 Y2 is in response to the large part of the community that asked for more to do. What I don’t like is black armory making us play old content to access new content, that’s not something a streamer would say “Yes please!” To. Streamers aren’t only giving feedback for themselves. The only one I really watch, Datto, makes content for casuals to get into bigger stuff in the game with guides. Most streamers have some way of explaining or simplifying pieces of content so casuals can understand and experience them. You can’t just go around victimizing yourself saying that because you have to grind more to get something now it’s a streamers fault.
This isn’t me saying D2 is flawless, I’m just saying streamers aren’t the ones to point fingers at. A streamer coulda told you the exotic duplicates wasn’t right at launch. A streamer can tell you enhancement cores in infusion are annoying af (especially with how rare they were back then).
• Unheard of team? Your lil conspiracy theory is stupid, and the team who did it was already well-known in the community. Streamers are annoying as hell, but this theory doesn’t hold.

                  • Streamers stream their stream because they are streamers. Even streaming a stream is streaming, when not necessarily a streamer that is streaming their stream while streaming. Summits for streamers that stream can also be for non streamers that stream, even when streaming their stream. I don't always stream, but when I stream it's my stream that's being streamed. The stream being streamed by the streamer is for everyone to see, because it's the stream of the streamers stream.
streamers
Didn't Redeem get worlds first on Riven? Pretty sure they are not "unheard" of The summit did good things for destiny people just like to point out flaws in the game and be like "LUL it's the streamers fault those evil people ruined ma game" It is true that if your game is popular, people will stream it and conversely if your game isn't popular not many will stream it or play it. Kind of common sense. Not necessarily a direct correlation, but having influencers on the internet is never a bad thing. At the end of the day bungie wants to make sales and produce a successful product. If you see lots of people online playing it you may want to check it out. Making a good game to stream is great for marketing. The niobe labs thing had 2 main issues -It was way to freaking hard to crack -The only way to even attempt it was to have a strong fireteam and legions of people behind you doing research If the activity didn't essentially require a fireteam a large part of the community could have at least played around in the space. It could have had a puzzle, sure, but there should have been some sort of community goal like we have to complete 100,000 forge runs collectively or something like that (not sure if that number would be realistic but you get the idea).

                    • There were no hints shared... Anyone could have guessed that in round 5 of the forge puzzle, you need to jump up into the air with a heavy machine gun(with THE WORST bloom in video game history by the way), and shoot three letters on two screens spelling out “fly”... because who would not know how to do that yet move forward in that puzzle without ever trying anything that odd before it or after it. Duh
