How quick are you to start looking things up?

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from the computer room! A certain crocodile kept hounding us to come here, so I guess here we are.. Papika: “Aifos! Can I use your computer!?” For what? Papika: “I gotta find 20 Joy Pendants for the teacher!” No, you don’t need a guide for that, all you have to do is- Papika: “Waaaaaaaah!” Oh brother.. *ahem* Video games are filled with quests, collectibes, collectible quests, and everything in between! We call this stuff “content”, and generally speaking, we play games to experience this “content”! But, sometimes, completing said content isn’t exactly a walk in the park, and we may need help every now and then. Enter the interwebs, where people handily post guides, tips, and all sorts of things to help you along! And that’s great! But man, there is nothing worse than relying on a guide, eh? Surely, I can’t be the only one who despises it? I am? Oh bother.. Well, whatever, we’ve all probably looked up a guide at one point or another! But, to varying degrees, I’m sure. I’m curious; how often do you look up a guide, and how far do you have to be pushed before doing so? Tl:dr? Here’s my point! How often do you look up a guide online, and to what extent? My answer;
I absolutely hate using guides. There’s just a sense of unfulfillment completing that hard puzzle, or finding that hidden collectible when someone just tells you where it is/how to do it. For that reason I very rarely look up guides, most often only for finding the last few of a large amount of collectibles, or after a day or two of failing the challenge before me.
That’s all for now folks! Jambuhbye!

      • I give it a solid twenty minutes of me doing something. I don't want to spend all day looking for one tiny unlockable, and usually there's much more entertaining things that I could be doing with my time.

        • I don't usually use guides, unless I really cannot figure something out, or I feel accomplished enough. What I mean by the 'feeling accomplished enough' is doing a lot of stuff by myself, but I can't find the rest of what I need. An example of this would be in Zelda: BOTW. I found about 90-100 of the shrines and maybe half of the side quests before I started looking locations up. I like doing the puzzles myself though.

          Only on blind collection achievements/quest like those bloody barenziah or however the hell it’s spelt quest in Skyrim. I don’t have the patience for large collection things if they aren’t marked or don’t give hints

          • Usually only for collectables included for completion/achievement hunting and only then if I'm hopelessly stuck. The first playthrough of anything is always without any guidance and often as blind as possible.

          • Agree. I prefer learning things on my own - as is usually intended. Even conversing with a friend about strategies or secrets is more rewarding than following some guide on the internet. From running raids in D1 to working with Minecraft redstone, minimalistic prior knowledge is the way to go

            • I gotta struggle for quite some time before I give in. Usually. Occasionally I'll look it up early if it's for an item I really want

              • I use to never use guides for games, sometimes I'd spend days stuck in the same spot of a certain game unable to figure out the puzzle or have no clue where to go. Nowadays though I will get YouTube up and running if I can't figure it out

                • Online game - likely look it up Single player - won't look it up unless it's something very small and tedious to find alone such as the stones of barenziah in skyrim

                • For large sets of collectibles, I look it up as soon as I want to complete the quest. The only reason for this being that it's hard to track which collectibles you've already got, so I try and collect as little as possible by myself.

                      It entirely depends on my mood these days honestly. If I reaaaaaaally like a game though.. no Google. Collected every single item in AC3 without a guide. I'm doing the same with Hollow Knight and refuse to use a guide for Octopath Traveler. edit - seeing good points about games that are MMOs or similar shit. Looking up guides for stuff like crafting tips and making sure certain skills do exactly what they say (respeccing sucks and is often barred by game progress or costs currency) is doable at all times IMO Edit 2 - I also looked up shrine locations for Zelda BotW after I hit like 55 of em. Some of them were hidden good.

                        Depends on the game. MMO's or multiplayer titles I'm going after instantly. Single player stuff I'll try and get a playthrough in first.

                          • Dark souls is the only game series I've really ever had to have a guide for. I was so dazed and confused when I first started that I just opened the wiki and started reading things to try to understand. But after the first game I only used the wiki after my first play through when I knew I missed something.
Also Bloodborne.

And reading the wiki did not help me understand D;
• I never pull up guides before completing a game. If I pull up a guide it’s for optimization (farming, or in-depths on mechanics) or for completionism (collectibles). I’d rather keep my first playthrough pure, and figure things out; afterwards, I want to know the know the ins and out and that’s what the guides are for.

                                • If I care about the game then I will do my best to avoid looking things up, but if it’s not something I’m heavily invested in I will look everything up. I started playing Warframe because a friend practically begged me to and I literally googled how to build my volt/where to find the mods after the first mission.

                                  • I generally don't like using guides, more satisfying to find things out for myself, but to be fair, there was next to no chance of me finding the mermaid's pendant in stardew valley on my own, I'd probably have spent a weekend (real time) wandering around without finding it.

                                    • When I feel like I'm not making any progress I'll look up a guide. Most of the time it's for collectables or unclear dialogue pathways.

                                      • The only time I look stuff up in games is if I have absolutely no clue where to even start solving the problem or where to look. I enjoy the challenge.
