I think the failure in Bungie’s projection wasn’t so much how the math adds up but that the Claymore would increase the active players because “everyone” would chase for it.
That didn’t happen. The bulk players, the passive non-sweaty, who would have swung the points in favor of continual play either didn’t show up or are sick of Crucible connection shenanigans. So Competitive was left to Trials players and that left those on the edge of to play or not to play to just not bother; the community didn’t need Trials 2. It needed an injection of players.
At this point about the only way Bungie might get players out of Quick Play into Competitive is to lose the point reduction all together and leave losses at 0 point gain.

So they tried to artificially bolster their PvP numbers, but it backfired in hilarious fashion.

I think that 0 point gain is unrealistic, but I do think that there are other avenues to explore. Take away loss streaks, earn more Glory points per win, additional Glory points for kills, general Crucible balancing, etc. I like the idea of losing points, but with the current state of the Crucible I'm rather afraid to play most game modes, god forbid Trials or Competitive, because I recognize that I'm mediocre at best and generally dislike the meta.

It doesn’t help that the claymore is just an okay gun in everybody’s hands. Another point that Bungie made that it was suppose to be the overpowered monster of a weapon, but in reality, it’s just a pretty good pulse rifle that can be used in very specific situations. The biggest problem is it’s mag size. When desperado activates, you fire off nine shots faster than you can blink, basically missing the mark on most because the sudden change in ROF. Not to mention when it procs, it doesn’t last very long before it’s gone, meaning you have to rush to get kills, making the first problem more likely, then adding sloppiness to the mix because of the limited time. The only people that can really make use of it are the 1% of people who have revived it, and even that may be a stretch.

The Claymore’s effectiveness is really an amusing side note in all of this discussion of how streaks and pointless work inside of Glory ranks. It was, I would assume, to be a gun that gave bragging rights about your skill level but since those who have it don’t use it it defeats that purpose. Those that might not ever reach the gun but it fits their play style where it would be lethal in their hands will never know. Either Bungie has to break the gun but then break all of Crucible or the reward needed to be cosmetic so one could more easily brag.

This is a good point.

Defeats the purpose of competitive if you don't lose any points for a loss, so I gotta disagree with that decision. But if they had a solo queue and a team queue I think that would make huge differences.

As a solo player, I would play comp if we didn't lose points for a loss...l would grind it non-stop if that was the case
