Crucible Labs: Showdown Feedback

Yesterday, Crucible Labs became available with its first featured game mode. We’ve gotten quite a few questions on how the mode works, where to leave feedback, and what to expect moving forward. PvP Design Lead Derek Carroll has some answers: Derek: The gametype we're testing in this Lab is Showdown, a 4v4 team game that might feel a bit familiar to those of you who played Doubles. Double Doubles? Anyway, the rules are simple: Take out the enemy as many times as you can within the time limit to win each round, best 3 out of 5. If the game is tied 2-2 after 4 rounds, you will play a FINAL SHOWDOWN that's pure elimination, crowning the victor. Crucible Labs is a work-in-progress, and we're learning as we go! We expect this Lab to be available until the next Weekly Reset on June 5, but if something goes truly sideways, we might have to end the test earlier. We’re deliberately starting Labs off simple, not just to test Showdown, but the Labs process itself. You will notice that there are no ranks or rewards given for participating in the Labs playlist this time, but that’s something we will likely change in the future. This time around, we're going to ask you to sound off in the feedback forums on Bungie.net, though we'll be watching Reddit, Twitter, and all your usual haunts. In the future, we'd like to get more scientific about the whole thing, but for now, your gut reactions will be great. We're interested in any and all feedback you may have to offer, but the most obvious things we'd like to hear are:
• What did you think about this mode? • Was anything confusing? • Did anything seem missing? • Was there a map it played better/worse on? • Were there spawning issues? • Were the rounds too short/too long? • Was there a weapon or other sandbox combination that affected the game in a negative way?
Thanks in advance for checking this out, and I hope you have fun as you help us make the Crucible a better place for everyone! -derek

  • Game mode was boring. Don't include it in the crucible playlist.

Sorry they aren’t listening to the community as a whole. Escalation protocol is proof that only streamers and content creators have their ear. And until they stop kissing ass we’ll continue to get what wasn’t asked for.

    • To be honest it felt like another slap in the face. The "new game mode" is just the doubles mode with 4 on a team. Just increasing or decreasing the player count doesnt make it a new mode. That being said, here is my constructive criticism: Rounds are too long and I'm not a fan of the tiebreaker round being a zone capture. The game mode doesnt seem like anything special and promotes passive play once a team has the lead. Not sure what to do about that other than lowering ttk. Theres 2 things everyone wants to see with crucible labs. True objective game modes (capture the flag, domination, oddball, a tweaked version of rift, a new football type game mode using the new raid mechanics of passing the ball) and dont be afraid to push the boundaries on a new game mode since it seems like for the last 9 months nobody in bungie wanted to stray too far from their original plan for d2. Break that mold and go the totally opposite direction of the original plan. Dont be afraid to make drastic changes that have to be nerfed at some point. The second thing everyone can agree on for crucible labs is sandbox changes. Weve tried different game modes and player counts and it didnt change the stale experience. We don't want another "go faster but still not as fast as d1 update" or the next one I'm worried about, the "feel more powerful, but still not as powerful as d1 update". We want a "holy shit we're faster and more powerful than we ever were in the last 3-4 years update" Make crucible labs a separate download so it doesnt affect the rest of crucible. Hell, even charge some money for it I dont care, but just please give us more than what we want for once. Take what you know about what we want and crank it up a few notches. Why not give us the tools to tweak the game and play exactly how we want? It would allow for endless replayability. Charge $30 for a Forge dlc that is basically just separate custom games that let's us modify maps like in halo and add in sliders for a ttk multiplier, speed multiplier, ability recharge rate multiplier, etc. Allow us to save settings and upload to the community like in halo so other people and try out your exact settings and have an in game voting system. That way all of bungie can actually see exactly what we want. I guarantee the entirety of your core playerbase from d1 as well as the people who got hooked on d2 without playing d1 will throw money at the screen again. That will also relieve some pressure from the devs, because if we dont like the state of the game, we can make it how we want and play the crucible forge dlc until the game is fixed. Sorry for the novel, but I am very passionate about destiny and seeing it in this state is upsetting. I thought I would continue to play d2 daily like I did d1 up until its last day... but i cant bring myself to play it much anymore until drastic changes happen. I doubt it will but I wish I could talk directly to a dev to just bounce ideas off of and actually feel like we're being heard. I know this is an astronomical request, but I have a million other ideas that can help make destiny thrive again. Thanks for your time!

    • I liked the mode. I think the time per round is too long. I want matches to last 8 minutes, never longer. That's my only feedback. Shorter rounds. Otherwise it could be a decent addition.

    • I think this gamemode was boring. Theres nothing different about it and it just feels like doubles. Would like to see the gamemode rift come to d2

    • Everything seemed pretty good about Showdown, it works really well in doubles. Rounds are way too long for 4 people though. Rounds need to be halved to promote actual pushing and fun plays. Current Sandbox works as well as it could, but we all know you need to make more weapons strong like graviton and vigilance wing.... Due to how the game mode plays I don't see any map this could play bad on, as it's basically a round based clash... All in all its a good improvement for the Crucible 😎

      • I really liked it and so have alot of my friends on xbox one. I'd say the one thing it needs is shorter time limits for rounds. It drags on for too long. When those last 30 seconds rolls around, however, it's really fun and intense. You're either rushing to get kills when you're behind or hiding when you're ahead. I think the game mode was the most fun on banner fall, i dont know there was a good amount of space to work with on that map as apposed to a smaller map like burnout. I'd say put it in to Casual woth shorter rounds.

      • This mode is pretty bland. Maybe add a capture point in the middle (maybe it moves randomly) that give you x2/3 per kill. It needs something else.

      • The rounds in Showdown lasted too long. There seemed to be too much power ammo, which made it easy to steamroll with little effort. And it faced the same issue as survival; meaning when teams got a lead they could just camp in the back

      • • What did you think about this mode? It's a refreshing mix-up of different playstyles. I felt like it was a clash variant at first, but after a few matches, I realised it had a nice flow between rounds and it had that competitive feel. • Was anything confusing? I would have loved a different audio prompt from Shaxx / announcer making clear there's rounds but obviously the knowledge kicks in later. I find the audio prompts super important to remind me of my priorities. • Did anything seem missing? I would have loved to see the heavy spawn closer to the side that lost the last round. I know that's completely out of the current game design but that kind of give and take, push and pull, call and response - that's the good stuff. • Was there a map it played better/worse on? Wormhaven was amazing. Really thrilling. Old sightlines became really over the top exciting again in a sudden death round. • Were there spawning issues? None. • Were the rounds too short/too long? I felt that the rounds could be a minute shorter. I'm in the minority but speedy rounds is great. I could even do 90 seconds. • Was there a weapon or other sandbox combination that affected the game in a negative way? Again, I'm in the minority, but invisible hunter swordspeople are given a lot of tools to move around and sneak up on people while they're ADSing that really became a huge threat. Once again, my preferred response would be a unique audio response - 'Watch out, they have a sword" and nothing else for the other power weapons. This could be just for power ammo taken from the wall, and not from pickups - giving a layer of secrecy and strategy to the swordusers in response.

        • it's clash with more than one round but it takes to long that by the end i hated it so shorten it to first to 2 round wins and the third round is showdown round.

        • I like the idea of overall kills defines the results however I wouldn’t ever play this game mode solo unless it was in a solo queue as matchmaking into fireteams was not enjoyable

        • Well, considering it put me and one other guy against a team of 4 and never gave us any other team mates we got slaughtered. It was fun, but matchmaking is kind of a joke right now. I appreciate a grind but when it's not fun, is there a point?

        • I enjoyed Showdown. It’s a competitive type game mode but can also be played in quickplay. My only suggestion would be to add some incentive. Maybe a bit of reputation towards Valor, an emblem that keeps track of the number of times Crucible Labs has been played or maybe a few blues to dismantle for glimmer or infuse. Thanks guys. Still loving the game.

        • Its a decent mode ,but it feels too much like survival. Also matchmaking for competitive right now is horrible. I think it would be better if we can match up against people with the same rank. Or stop taking points away for losses. Trials matchmaking also needs to be fixed. It should get harder as you get closer to a flawless card. The d1 trials matchmaking was perfect.

        • • What did you think about this mode? For me it wasn't that fun. WIthout a team your teammates would drop, and with a team you could just turtle if you gained a decent advantage. The excitements quickly turned into a game of protect the lead you acquired. • Was anything confusing? 4 rounds was hard to explain. I'd keep it to 3. • Did anything seem missing? It didn't feel really unique to me. Just more people in a game of doubles. • Was there a map it played better/worse on? Altar of flame left a lot of hiding spots making it a worse option. I loved Endless Vale, but not Emperor's Respite. I really really dislike Radiant Cliffs also. That's just in general though. • Were there spawning issues? A few times I would spawn on an opponent in solos. That's never fun. • Were the rounds too short/too long? Rounds felt very long adding that turtle feeling. • Was there a weapon or other sandbox combination that affected the game in a negative way? The new exotic sword Worldline Zero destroyed my soul. That's more of a general note though. I legit thought the player was glitching the first time I saw it used.

        • I felt showdown felt too much like doubles and went on for too long, I think it wouldn't be as bad if the timer was reduced each round to maybe 2-2:30 minutes instead of 3, also 6v6 needs to be in this mode if it's going to work. That just my opinion

        •
• What did you think about this mode?
I like the idea/concept, but in execution it lacks excitement and drags on for far too long.
• Was anything confusing?
Not really, but the round kills/scores seem a little too secondary or not obvious enough the way the UI looks.
• Did anything seem missing?
6v6 would be more enjoyable, as with all Crucible modes besides Trials.
• Was there a map it played better/worse on?
Not that I recall.
• Were there spawning issues?
Not that I recall.
• Were the rounds too short/too long?
This is the biggest problem with the mode: too long. Too many rounds and the rounds are too long.
• Was there a weapon or other sandbox combination that affected the game in a negative way?
Not beyond all other Crucible modes; that is to say, hand cannons, scout rifles, and even ARs need buffs to be comparable or competitive with Vigilance Wing and Graviton Lance (on PC).

        • Easy: 1. TTK, TTK, TTK! 2. LET ME CHOOSE MY OWN FREAKING MATCH TYPE!!!! 3. STOP GIVING US WHAT WE DIDN'T ASK FOR AND GIVE US WHAT WE ASK FOR!!! I know dev is hard and you guys are only human, but it's like asking a store if they have bread and they say "Yes, here are the tires you ordered."

          • Crucible Labs exited so many people when it was first announced but of course they left out: "As a rule, Crucible Labs will not touch sandbox balance". Not being able to try different things like TTK, weapon balance & slots, and shorter radar reach pretty much makes this entire idea a wasted opportunity.

            • 6 vs 6 would be much better in all game modes. 4 vs 4 is boring and only team shooting. Lower the TTK at least double. Get dedicated servers or at least a better matchmaking. Now too many players and often full fireteams have a connection advantage.

Calus "come guardian enter the arena and entertain me further. Bring your finest revelry and bask in adulation at the destruction of your foes" MAKE THIS HAPPEN that is all 😀
