The beta failed to meet even my lowered expectations

I've got limited space here, so rather than dissect my entire experience with the beta, beating the dead horse on a NUMBER of known issues that I believe have been fully fleshed out, I'm going to just to discuss the things that I think are most important to hammer home: First, while I believe the beta is quite possibly the worst thing I have ever seen from modern gaming (the animations from Mass Effect: Andromeda were at least amusing before they were fixed), I do have a couple of positive comments. Bungie's environmental design team, once again, hit it out of the park! They are quite literally the ONLY thing I consider about this company to be AAA+ quality. No matter whether it was the story mission or the strike, the world environments were amazing. And the strike itself, if you removed all of the spongy enemies and the spongie bosses, wasn't half bad. A little long for my taste, but it had its fun moments. Now, the bad: 1. The weapons - globally, they felt terrible and REALLY weak. It took multiple shots to take down even average red-bar ads. The perks are watered down and unless it was a perk that effected your magazine size or DRASTICALLY effected shot rate, you didn't notice a big difference in performance. Even power weapon performance was comical. I shot Banner the Unbent about 14 times with my sniper, most of the shots being headshots, and it didn't move his health bar below half! Grenade launchers did little to no damage to the boss and were highly inaccurate. Fusion rifles didn't wow me, and shotgun wasn't even playable. I finally got my hands on a RL, but at that point, the beta had already shattered my resolve to try to go back into any activity to test it out. 2. The new loadout: Two primary weapon system SUCKS far more than even I could have imagined. I wasn't a fan of the system when they announced it at the reveal, and have railed on and on about it since that time, and often times I was criticized for judging something I hadn't tried yet. Well I have, and its even worse than I could have imagined. The new system is effectively a WORSE newb combo from Halo - use energy weapon to crack shields, switch to kinetic to finish him off. Except the newb combo was easy and quick to execute and was mostly an insta-kill, whereas in Destiny, you have to plink at the shielded enemy with multiple shots, then switch to your kinetic to whittle away at them some more. Even as a huge Halo fan, I gotta say - this is a poorly executed attempt at replicating that system. 3. Ammo economy: Was terrible. I may have seen more power weapon ammo than most people on here report, but it wasn't MUCH more. Often times, I'd never see a brick drop. And several times I ran out of either energy/kinetic, and was in serious danger to run out of ammo completely. 4. Ability/Super recharge: Again, slow. Bungie's already aware of this, but I doubt a good fix is possible. Armor perks reducing recharge time can only go so far because, due to the unified sandbox, it ALL has to be balanced for PVP - and we now see that PVP will be Bungie's ONLY priority. 5. New supers: They weren't even worth having IMO. They were better used to clear minions than they were to try to do DPS, and you got it so rarely that you might as well have been playing Battlefield 1. Having multiple abilities mapped to the same button is a bad idea in what can often be an action packed shooter. Often I did not use the ability I wanted to, and also wasted my party ability by sliding into cover and then unintentionally deploying it at the end of my slide. 6. Movement: does not feel smooth or natural. Feels very awkward, and ALL characters walk/run really slow. The jumps don't feel natural and often times, you feel like you are fighting your own character to get him to do what you want him to do. If your counting on exploration keeping people intrigued, this system is simply going to hinder their experience. I can't even get close to making jumps I KNOW I could make easily in D1. 7. Enemy health/armor: They're all bullet sponges, even the red-bar ads! Majors have become mini-bosses, and it is so painful to just chip away at the boss slowly with a primary/energy weapon. Some suggestions and comments: It is clear to me that Destiny 2 was entirely remade for PVP, and mainly to try to get around having to fully separate PVE from PVP. And it's failed miserably. Bungie, do you realize that there are a lot o shooters out there that feature generic/standardized combat with no super powers and no incredible, high-tech weaponry? Battlefield, CoD, Halo, Gears, etc. If we wanted that kind of play, we would have been playing THOSE games. Instead, we wanted all the power weapons we had, we wanted the space magic in droves! That is the magic that made Destiny so fun and addicting in the first place. Now I'm aware that your under pressure from Sweaty-McDickface to start remove all those things from the game to make the game "more balanced and competitive" but you have effectively removed all of those things from a game PREDICATED on awesome weaponry and space magic. What do you think is going to keep players coming back? Pretty environments only take you so far. You can have space magic in PVE and PVP for those who love it and a bland PVP experience for Sweaty-McDickface if you want. All you need to do is make ONE, maybe TWO PVP modes where you MUST use standardized gear, trickle is on permanently, and you have "MLG" versions of those maps so that heavy and special ammo doesn't spawn. THERE! Those who want a boring, primary-based PVP experience can have it. Everyone else can enjoy their space magic and power weapons and everyone's happy. NO remake of the entire game necessary. You can call the new mode "Hardcore" mode and the weapon/armor pool for that/those modes can be balanced separately from everything else so what players like TripleWreck want will not have any impact on what the rest of the community wants. Secondly, even with a "hardcore" mode, it is clear you need to separate PVE from PVP. We came to this game for the PVE, not the PVP. I ditched Halo 4 to play Destiny 1 after all! So stop treating us like second or third-priority gamers. We pay the same money that PVP players do, and arguably, we bring in more revenue. PVE players are more likely to recruit new players to this game because PVE content is easier to teach/learn, so it is more accessible to new players. Sweaty-McDickface isn't going to recruit new players to this game - it will take a LONG time for new players to become competent players and assets in PVP. Finally, streamlining skills for the sake of PVP just doesn't work in this game. The advantage of keeping the old style perk tree would be to simply the control scheme, as the Captain America Shield for the sentinal could replace an under-utilized option, like the standard Ward of Dawn you first unlock (no armor/blessings of light). IMO, the "team ability" is just awkward and wasn't all that useful outside the titan's cover deployment - which was more effective in PVP than in PVE. I have so much more to say regarding this topic, but only so much space here, so I'll end with this: Bungie just needs to go back to the D1 system for both Skills and loadouts and separate PVE from PVP. Forget the idiots who say "but then its not a new game!" But even the Halo series has enough commonality between the games to feel familiar and at home, whether you pick up Halo CE or you pick up Halo 5. D2 isn't even the same game - its clearly just your average generic shooter with aliens.

This game is in trouble. RPG Skill tree and weapon perk system is a big downgrade from D1

  • Bungie is lucky that Anthem is not coming out this year. That is 1 game that will kill Destiny off.

i'm gonna let this breathe for a while and do my own review in a few days.... but i agree with almost all the things that you are saying... but that shouldn't be a surprise to you, as we've been calling a spade a spade for over a month now, in almost lock step tandem.

          • I agree with everything except you forgot one important thing. Destiny 2 will also not have dedicated servers which means all the teleporting people in pvp will still be happening. And the glitches in Raids due to the player hosting having connection issues will also still exist whether you experienced it in this beta or not it WILL happen as Destiny 1 has already proven in spades.

          • I was bored with the beta after playing each character through the mission and strike once, and a couple of crucible games. There is no want to play destiny 2 again right now. I think the only thing that could drive me to purchase this game will be guilt from other friends that already preordered.

            • As noted in the weekly update if people actually were willing to inform themselves. "The PVE game tuning has changed pretty significantly since the Beta build was deployed. The nature of a Beta of this scale requires that it’s based off a build of the game that is now months old. So, in many cases, your feedback is helping us validate changes that were previously made based on internal feedback and playtesting. For example, we too felt that ammo (especially power ammo) was too scarce in PvE. In addition to retuning the drop rates, we built a system that guarantees power ammo drops for you and your Fireteam from certain enemies, giving power weapons a more reliable and predictable role in your arsenal. Other areas where we’ve made significant tuning changes include grenade effectiveness in PvE, Boss vitality, and weapon damage against non-player combatants."

              • There is a bright side to the beta. It's a build that's month old they already addressed and are aware of some issues their testers pointed out before we got it. They already made changes and our feedback lets them know they were right in those changes. P.S. not blind to the situation just an optimistic player who is hoping for the best.

                        • Thank you, i 1000% agree with everything you said and ive been saying the same thing since the reveal and the beta started. I wanted to try out all the characters but i tried the titan first and it was just soo damn boring and everything is just soo slow it made me not even want to play the beta anymore and try out the other classes. But ya you got it like exactly right with all the things that are wrong with this. They really need to get their shit together and stop focusing so much on PvP. I dont think they understand that as much as they push it, its not going to become an esport and vast majority of players dont really care to much about the pvp and if they played pvp is was only because there was no pve content or anything else to do in the game. So bungie for the love of god stop focusing so much on pvp and make the pve experience fun. The gun system with 2 primaries is the probably the worst thing i have played with in a shooter, and not only is it stupid to lump in 8 weapon types within heavy but they dont even feel powerful. I had the same experience and had to like shoot a guy like more than 10 times with the sniper to even do a sliver of dmg thats just freaking unacceptable to me, and you pair that with barely getting any ammo at all. Increasing the ammo drops is not gonna fix a terrible gun system. it was perfectly fine and lots of fun the way it was before there was no need to go and ruin it. And on top of that you might as well not even have any abilities or super anymore. I got to maybe use the super twice the whole strike, and it barely did any damn damage to the boss and it was just infuriating to wait like 5minutes for my grenades to come back for it to not even kill a random low lvl red ad, thats just insane too. And what the hell is up with the arcstrider? the other classes get cool new subclasses and abilities and you basically just take the blade dancer and give it a staff?? like are you freaking kidding me? not only that but the hunters are extremely underpowered now and melee combat isnt really effect at all especially against bosses, so their new super really feels like hunters are getting screwed big time. And don't even get me started on the pvp and all the modes being 4v4 thats another one of the stupidest changes i have seen. Why would you think that having only that would be fun? Bungie had such a great pedigree with halo and making large maps and vehicles and having it be really fun. That's what i was hoping for like 10v10 or 12v12 or something on larger maps with some new vehicles added to the game or like big weapons like the scorch cannon or something too, i feel would have been amazing and lots of fun and that's what i was hoping for that and to have a level like in reach where you can pilot your ship and have space combat. I didn't have such high expectation going into the beta with things that i had heard at the reveal like the new gun system but it was far worse than even i expected. I have been playing bungie games for over 20yrs going back to marathon and one of my favorites and such a great sleeper hit oni, and of course Halo, being probably my favorite video game franchise. So i always had such high hopes and respect for your games and development and that was one of the reasons why i got destiny and then as i played destiny 1 it slowly slowly got worse and the lack of content and just completely ignoring fans and doing your own thing, and toward the end with rise of iron even tho that didnt have as much content as i would have liked it started to get much better and so i had high hopes that D2 would learn from that and go even beyond. But wow was i wrong, this is much worse than even vanilla destiny i would say. And to be honest after playing the beta for about an hour it really almost made me want to cancel my preorder and im still on the fence about that as well. So ya i hope you really listen to the mass of people calling you out on your bullshit trying to force it to be an esport to capitalize on it and solely focus on the pvp and you listen to what people want and make these changes. I want to be like a magical space wizard constantly using my powers and feeling powerful. If i wanted a straight gunplay shooting game i would go and play halo or battlefield or something thats not why i like and want to play destiny. The powers set it apart and you effectively removed that and removed all the fun using that in D2 i want to feel overpowered and have cool abilities and use it, thats what's fun. Standing there shooting a boss with an autorifle for 10minutes watching the health barely move isn't fun in any kind of the definition. So ya i hope you really listen to people and fix this shit and keep the content coming in or people will leave your game faster than they did No Mans sky or for honor. But ya again i agree 1000% with everything that the OP said, and im glad to see other people share the same opinions. I just hope more people would be vocal about it so maybe they will realize truly how much they screwed up.

                          • I'm primarily PvP and I despise the new set up. Like you said, guns feel wonky (TTK tied with the Division, tons of flinch, crap AA, weak ass weapons, slow movement, etc.) and I love primaries (gimme back my Eyasluna/Palindrome and MIDA). Skill gap has been reduced tremendously due to nearly doubling TTK (team shot was rewarded in D1 without making 1 v 2+ nearly impossible. Everything feels so less crisp than D1. The irony of your post, though, with naming someone like Triplewreck is that he and many streamers like him loved y1 Destiny or the Taken King--the same thing you and many PvE players loved. They (myself included) were simply frustrated with the skill gap closing when sticky nades (with armor and perks allowing people to have 2 with fast recharge or regain on respawn), ice breaker, uni-remote and sidearms overshadowed everything else. I think a lot of the PvP base were actually asking for things to return to earlier destiny balances but with tweaks that prevented abusing something like grenade spam or some sort of exploit that required less skill vis a vis gun skill. So, I want you to know, all the PvE players should know that there are a great many of us PvP players who feel like this beta was trash and an utter betrayal of the spirit of destiny.

                                • My thoughts pretty much line up with yours. I've got alot of money in preorder stuff (Limited Edition plus the entire Funko Pop collection) but I might just cancel. The parts of the beginning story mission we're cool but too much of it was a let down. Add the fact I have many great games still to finish (Horizon, Metal Gear, Doom, and even Mass Effect if I'm bored) makes alot less time for subpar games.

The You hit it on the nail. Also this is going to be my one and only post I make. I went thru the beta fiasco, for d1 and bungee never really came back from it. The positive the game is pretty has a much better story etc. the bad what the op said, the guns are weaker and oh my god the bullet sponges. I can tell. They just care about pvp if I buy this game twice, because my wife plays also this needs to be fixed, we play this game for pve, speaking of pve wtf is the patrol missions? Does that feature return? Why not show it off in beta? I see allot of focus on pvp destiny pvp has always been meh, destiny 1 was fun for patrol, strikes and raids not the laggy pvp. No pre order here, game in this state will not be a full retail purchase here. Also if I know activision I will get more for my money buying this game a year from now if it survives, I say that because I am hearing way more bad than good from the player base. Not to mention i can't really tell the difference from the d1 vs d2 new graphic shaders to support 4k a lil change to the ui, and that is it... feels like a polished dlc. Nothing personal, but I am not excited to rush out and buy they game no matter how much they spend in marketing. I need to see something new and I need to see something done about the pve concerns. I have a funny feeling there is going to be another content issue..... That is my one and only post I will be watching.
