Verizon Wireless Users Claim Company is Throttling Netflix
Verizon Wireless users over at Reddit have been complaining this week that the company has started throttling their connections to Netflix without informing them of the change. To be clear the throttling is less than you'll see in many instances, with users saying their speeds on Verizon Wireless are capped at around 10 Mbps when both streaming Netflix content -- or running Netflix's simple Fast.com speedtest. When these same users use the same connection to stream or access Netflix's speedtest with a VPN (or simply access another speedtest like ours), the limitations magically disappear. "We are definitely not capping data on our end and don’t cap data for any mobile networks," Netflix said in a statement to The Verge, though Verizon has yet to respond to a request for comment. "Running fast.com produces 9-12mbps, settles down to 10mbps," states one Reddit user. "Running speedof.me, Speedtest, and coverage, produces speeds upwards of 60mbps." Another Reddit thread has additional detail, with Verizon Wireless users saying they're seeing the same thing with YouTube traffic. There are similar complaints also now popping up at Howard Forums suggesting this is a new phenomenon. Of course when carriers like Verizon began offering unlimited data again, many quickly proceeded to throttle video -- and in some instances have inposed an extra charge if subscribers want to stream in HD (or 4K). But to be clear, 10 Mbps is more than enough to stream 1080p60 and 1440p30, though users say they're running into buffering at 1440p60 or 4K (not that many users care about 4K on their mobile device anyway). Again, we've asked Verizon for comment, and until they clarify what's happening here it's hard to point any fingers. The Verizon website does explain some of the ways the company manages video on its network, and "deprioritizing" video is also now standard practice at competitors like T-Mobile and AT&T. When Verizon responds with more detail, we'll update this post. If you're on Verizon Wireless, let us know what you're seeing in the comment section below.
This is exactly what Net Neutrality's job is to stop. Nobody should be in favor of this practice.

My Netflix is running fine, no problems, unless I am in a low coverage area. Yes, I am a Verizon customer. No, I do not want to lose Net Neutrality.

This is a mobile network. They don't have the capacity to let everyone stream Netflix at fast speeds like a regular provider does. Better to throttle speeds so everyone can watch, than to let half the people watch while the rest sit staring at a revolving circle for hours. All ISPs have the power to throttle speeds if they deem it necessary, and you agree to that when signing up. Nobody is losing out on content. "Oh no, I can't stream Netflix in 4K on my iPad without experiencing buffering! Woe is me!"

      • They're allowed to throttle speeds, especially during peak hours, if they deem that it's affecting others' usage. I'm sure they have some system that monitors available bandwidth and throttles users at a certain level, but since that isn't publicly available, it seems unjustified to customers -- and it may be. On the other hand, I can't really see a reason they would throttle a connection if it didn't negatively impact others' usage.

      • Good thing my ISP doesn't do that. I get constant speeds no matter if I'm streaming or gaming or whatever.

Terms of Conditions people. It's easy to understand why that is. Streaming videos (such as done in Netflix) uses a disproportionate bandwidth and affects other users on the network. This is different than net neutrality as mobile networks have considerably less capacity. ---- Edit: Just going to leave this here: Again- look at the terms and conditions, it's literally in the first line of the topic:
What are Verizon’s rights to limit or end Service or end this Agreement? We can, without notice, limit, suspend or end your Service or any agreement with you for any good cause, including, but not limited to: (1) if you: (a) breach this agreement; (b) resell your Service; (c) use your Service for any illegal purpose, including use that violates trade and economic sanctions and prohibitions promulgated by any US governmental agency; (d) install, deploy or use any regeneration equipment or similar mechanism (for example, a repeater) to originate, amplify, enhance, retransmit or regenerate an RF signal without our permission; (e) steal from or lie to us; or, if you're a Postpay customer; (f) do not pay your bill on time; (g) incur charges larger than a required deposit or billing limit, or materially in excess of your monthly access charges (even if we haven't yet billed the charges); (h) provide credit information we can't verify; or (i) are unable to pay us or go bankrupt; or (2) if you, any user of your device or any line of service on your account, or any account manager on your account: (a) threaten, harass, or use vulgar and/or inappropriate language toward our representatives; (b) interfere with our operations; (c) "spam," or engage in other abusive messaging or calling; (d) modify your device from its manufacturer's specifications; or (e) use your Service in a way that negatively affects our network or other customers. We can also temporarily limit your Service for any operational or governmental reason.
This is why you read these things, people.

        • For those of you saying net neutrality regulations are bad, then why aren't they getting rid of all of them instead of just the ones that allow them to throttle/limit data? Why not get rid of the regulations that make it impossible to lay cable?🤔🤔🤔 You know....so small time ISPS can actually grow?

          • I messaged my ISP about net neutrality and throttling and here's what they said in return
WOW! supports an open Internet, and follows the principles of no blocking, no throttling, and no paid prioritization. As such, we do not have any data caps in place on any of our Internet plans.
Do I take them at their word? Or are they just saying stuff?

            • Mobile network providers throttle game sites for 3g/4g data. I can see it on my phone when on a decent signal sites like google work but Bungie or XBOX fails to load completely sometimes. I know how easy it is to throttle domains. Unfortunately, every contract you sign with any service provider gives the provider exclusive throttling rights to preserve quality os service and this makes it legally challenging.

            • -blam!- net neutrality. You people seriously don't understand why 300,000,000 people won't be able to simultaneously stream Netflix without a problem huh? Bandwidth is infinite in your minds? Give me a break man. Bandwith is finite. It has to be allocated somehow. You can either let politicians allocate it or you can choose to allocate it yourselves via the free market where we will, in time, get more at a lower price. Or leave it up to politicians and have yourself another mismanaged government monopoly. FCC commissioner Ajit Pai said that the proposed Net Neutrality plan the FCC is considering is 332 pages long. It will not be released to the public until after the FCC has voted. Pai claims this regulation will give “the FCC the power to micromanage virtually every aspect of how the Internet works.” Doesn't that sound great?

                  •
Verizon Wireless users over at Reddit
And that's where I stopped reading. There is no proof, it's an article written about random people on the internet making a claim. A claim they can't really back up, because I'm a Verizon customer, and my Netflix has been fine.

                    • *checks time* It's currently 11:53, and I need to eat lunch.
Here in my garage, just bought this new Lamborghini here. It’s fun to drive up here in the Hollywood hills. But you know what I like more than materialistic things? Knowledge. In fact, I’m a lot more proud of these seven new bookshelves that I had to get installed to hold two thousand new books that I bought. It’s like the billionaire Warren Buffett says, “the more you learn, the more you earn.” Now maybe you’ve seen my TEDx talk where I talk about how I read a book a day. You know, I read a book a day not to show off it’s again about the knowledge. In fact, the real reason I keep this Lamborghini here is that it’s a reminder. A reminder that dreams are still possible, because it wasn’t that long ago that I was in a little town across the country sleeping on a couch in a mobile home with only forty seven dollars in my bank account. I didn’t have a college degree, I had no opportunities. But you know what? Something happened that changed my life. I bumped into a mentor. And another mentor. And a few more mentors. I found five mentors. And they showed me what they did to become multimillionaires. Again, it’s not just about money, it’s about the good life; health, wealth, love and happiness. And so I record a little video, it’s actually on my website, you can click here on this video and it’ll take you to my website where I share three things that they taught me. Three things that you can implement today no matter where you are. Now, this isn’t a “get rich quick” scheme. You know, like they say if things sound too good to be true they are too good to be true. I’m not promising you that tomorrow you’re gonna be able to go out and buy a Lamborghini. But what I am telling you is that it can happen faster than you think if you know the proven steps. So, I record a little two minute video on my website. Like I said, now it’s not the most professional I just shot it here with my iPhone, but it’s real. Nobody can argue, this is my true story. And I’m going to give you the three most important things you can do today. So click the link, go there it’s completely free to watch it it’s just a couple minutes. Invest in yourself. Always be curious. Don’t be a cynic. Okay, people see videos like this and they say “Ah that’s not real that’s for somebody else.” Don’t listen, don’t listen. Be an optimist. Like, Conrad Hilton, the man who started Hilton Hotel, he said that he was only fifteen years old when he read a book by Helen Keller, and that book changed his life. Books can change your life. And in that book, Helen Keller said “optimism” so if you’re a cynic, if you’re a pessimist you don’t need to click here. Don’t worry about it, I don’t need to talk to everybody. But if you’re somebody who knows that there’s something better, cause the dream is possible, you know, for some of you watching it’s not necessarily a Lamborghini, maybe it’s a new job, a new opportunity, starting your own company. Maybe it’s a new lifestyle without so much stress, traveling the world, doing those things you know you’re destined to do. You can do those unless you understand finances. Money, I don’t call it money anymore, I call it fuel units. You must have enough fuel units to live out your dream and to live out your destiny. So, I’ll see you on my website, it’s a quick video and you’ll see there absolutely free. So just click this video and you’ll be taken there in a second, and uh, I’m excited to share this amazing stuff. You’ll see, not because of anything of me but because I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from mentors many years ahead of me. Not just in books like these, although I love books but also real in-person mentors. So let me share with you these three tips that have made all the difference in my life. They’re practical, you can do them today, you can start on them today. All right? See you there on my site.
