Someone in Destiny 2 somehow has the power to Take (maybe?).

Now, before you go all ''HURR DURR YOU IDIOT ONLY ORYX CAN TAKE'' on me, lemme explain. Observe the image above. It's a screenshot from Destiny 2, and it shows a Cabal Phalanx that's been taken. Obviously. Except, something doesn't quite add up here. Specifically, as you'll see from the armour design and the diamond-ish shield it carries, it's a Phalanx from the Red Legion. So then, wtf 'took' this guy? As far as we know, Destiny 2 is the first time the Red Legion enters our system, and it happens long after Oryx has already been killed. So, what on Earth out there managed to take this Red Legionnaire while they're in our solar system while Oryx (the only individual in the known universe we know of who can take other beings) is dead as all hell? I have a couple of wild theories, but I'd like to hear what the lore community has to say on this perplexing matter.

  • When we killed Oryx, we left a power vacuum(similar to overthrowing a government and not replacing a better leader in place). The Hive theology is that the strongest being is the god, and since we missed our opportunity, I'm assuming it's just a random Hive that grew powerful enough to take control, similar to how Malok did. Their is also always the chance that one of his sisters took control. The only problem with these theories is that only Oryx had the power to take, however when Oryx showed Savathun the Book of Sorrows, she said that the whole thing was lies. All that we know about Taken and Hive could all be wrong. We will just have to wait and see

  • I just want to see a boss battle against a fallen or cabal that is half corrupted by siva and half taken

  • Here's another puzzler: what's up with the armor? When Oryx took things, all their gear was also taken. He did not deal in half-measures. This Phalanx's armor has kept it's red hue, meaning either the armor resisted being taken or it was equipped post-Close-Encounter. Are the Cabal redomesticating their Taken companions? Have they learned to take for themselves? The hood may never know.

    • There have been many questions about that situation. "Who is now in control of the Taken?" We already know that Oryx is dead for good, several Taken princes have been killed as well to eliminate the Taken threat, but there's one thing to look at closer. Eris grabs a relic from the sword that Oryx wielded. She then mentions "my queen." This "queen" could be the key as to knowing who controls the Taken. It could be the Cabal Queen or another queen that was never mentioned before, except that the only known queen is the Queen from The Reef. Other than that, it's still a mystery to be solved.

        A. It IS a phalanx that was in our system. Maybe an experimental gear set or some rogue phalanx. A major we never saw before because it was never deployed/seen by guardians. The taken probably still have some majors in reserve. B. Oryx fought the red legion before and never used his phalanx on us. C. The Taken can take without Oryx, which is the most likely explanation.

        • The Cabal were fighting the Taken long before we got into the fight. It's not unreasonable for Red Legion troops to have been taken. However it does raise the question as to why we never saw them until D2 was released. Maybe they'll explain it. Or maybe they don't have time to explain it and that storyline will be sufficiently exited.

            • None of your ideas are correct, because it's me I can take things. I've taken your Doritos already. You didn't notice did you? Now they're all black and gross and teleport all over the place. Good luck eating them now.

              • might be a bit soon to call it but i feel that the cabal and taken have fought before. which makes for an interesting plot how did they manage to survive oryx live to fight another day. it seems like the cabal were more then aware of oryx as a threat in ttk.

                • As u see, the phalanx's chest piece is red instead of the taken color. So maybe the phalanx must of been able to take and equip loot! (Mind blown)

                • If you look at the phalanx's chest armour, you'll see that it is a normal red legion armour piece. All the taken we've fought so far have had their entire bodies and armour taken. I think when the red legion arrives, they bring a few of the taken into their ranks. We've killed their leaders, so it makes sense they'd be looking for strong leadership elsewhere.

                      • I think it was mentioned somewhere in the lore that "taking" is something oryx discovered, not a unique power to him, maybe he set up a message to his siblings/children containing the technique in case someone invaded his throne world and offed him.

                            • Given Luke Smith's recent admission that Bungie didn't actually know what The Darkness is and that they are perfectly willing throw out any story element that they no longer feel like pursuing, are you honestly expecting there to be a logical, story-based answer to this?

                              • Sure looks Taken, but the non-taken armor doesn't quite fit. Perhaps Ghaul found a way to reclaim some of his previously taken troops?

                                • It's plausible that this phalanx may be one of the many taken remaining from the Taken War in D1. We know that after killing Oryx, many taken still remained in our Solar system, So it's not unlikely the taken we encounter in D2 are remnants of Oryx's horde, instead of new taken from another power. My crackpot hypothesis is that the shoulder pads this phalanx is wearing act as some sort of control harness, allowing the Red Legion to control its movements.

                                  • Perhaps a hive or someone with close relations with the darkness found a way to commune with the deep like Oryx, either that or the taken have a new leader which is unlikely as it would be a taken during oryx's regin since being the leader doesn't automatically give you the power to take so I think something has found a way to commune with the deep, and then learn't the way to take.

                                    • I believe Oryx is alive and well in D2. Why? How the..? Well if i remember correctly, the hive god can be resurrected if a big war with lots of deaths occurs... and im pretty sure Ghaul will be providing that once he invades.. resurrecting Oryx. Thats my take.. maybe there will be a strike to bring like an Oryx echo down, PlayStation exclusive strike maybe? Anyways yeah.. thoughts? Comments? Smart remarks? Trolls?
