The winter mission is not part of the black garden story line.

I know but was it not part of the overall story mission or did that change with the house of wolves DLC pack, I remember completing it first time round before the DLC come out.

Using the spark of light made running through the original story line redundant. So Bungie repackaged the old story line into bite sized pieces. The quests for HoW, A strangers call etc were made for new guardians to run through the 'old' story with a purpose. It also refreshed older content for gun quests. That's why the old going from the Earth to the moon then on to Venus and finally Mars, feels so different. Now How and Ttk are in the mix.
