What do people think about this argument?
I personally will never accept obesity and think it's asinine to believe you can be healthy at any weight. All research shows that being obese puts you at increased risk for many life threatening diseases not to mention you can't go up a flight of stairs without dying.
I thought this was a pretty general consensus but then recently I had someone make the argument that we have different heights and skin colors so why not different weights? Now at first I thought they were screwing with me but it turns out they were dead serious.
So am I insane or do other people think the same way I do? Just for the record I think fat shaming is stupid. You should be encouraging to people. Most people don't handle being put down very well.

1 ReplyBtw, fat shaming does not exist. It's just "shaming." If I ridicule you for saying something stupid, it's not "intelligence shaming." People kill me with these made up words.

6 RepliesAs someone who is new to being obese, I was injured and gain a lot of weight quickly. 130lbs to be exact... Yea I know that is a lot of weight. But that is what a year of being bed ridden will do to you with my wife's cooking. I can say beyond a doubt that being obese is the most unhealthiest existence I have ever endured. Having been an athlete for 20 years of my life from 4 years of age, until I was injured at 24. To now experience 4 years of obesity has been enlightening. The one thing I have learned is the mental effect obesity has. It is daunting to look at the numbers you need to lose. It is also depressing. Not to mention you literally feel like shit 24/7. The sad thing is most obese people don't realize they feel like crap. They are used to feeling like crap.

3 RepliesWhile I don't think it's ok to ridicule someone based on their weight, I do think that there should be societal encouragement/pressure to be at a healthy weight. You just can't be healthy at every weight, it's asinine to think so.

2 RepliesEdited by HurtfulTurkey: 3/13/2017 3:24:54 AMYou can be sufficiently healthy at somewhat higher BMIs but I think for the most part, people that say those things really just want to not be ridiculed by strangers on the internet. Like, comments such as "Fat people aren't healthy. They aren't attractive. They aren't as useful as a half fit person. They are just plain worse than normal people" Bro, you're probably an overweight 15 year old yourself. Chill.

I agree

Tldr but fat acceptance = death acceptance. Might as well be promoting cancer & heart disease.

1 ReplyWell I mean you don't have to roast them but I shouldn't be forced to have sex with them because they want to -blam!- me. If hot women can turn me down I should be able to do the same.
-
11 RepliesI don't fat shame but me and the woman definite laugh quietly when we see a real big fatty. Bearded ladies are always a funny sight. Only time I shame people are when they open their mouth about my smoking.
-
2 RepliesYou shouldn't maliciously ridicule people for being overweight, but it certainly should not be accepted and encouraged.

5 RepliesFat people aren't healthy. They aren't attractive. They aren't as useful as a half fit person. They are just plain worse than normal people and I don't have a problem with fat shaming or harassment of them. Whatever they can change it for their own good but they don't so they get what they get

1 ReplyEdited by Hellbent02: 3/12/2017 11:36:07 AMPeople should just mine each other's business. If someone wants to destroy their body in a legal way then that's their choice and their problem. Just because a person is something you don't accept doesn't give anyone the right to put them down and bully them. All that does is make the bully look like an ass and an idiot. If you have to shame other for their choice then you apparently got some issues of your own. That being said, I'm a big guy myself and I know the health risk and I've got some myself related to my weight and some non-related to weight. I'll be the first to say that no one should want to be overweight but I'm not going to tell someone how they should live either. You live and you learn.
none of this is intended for a specific person.
7 RepliesBeing fat obviously isn't healthy, just like smoking. In both cases that doesn't give you the right to harass someone

5 RepliesEdited by Cultmeister: 3/11/2017 5:32:52 PMThere's a difference between 'pretending being fat is healthy' and 'not trying to force people to lose weight'. People have a right to bodily autonomy, and that includes being really fat, but past a certain point you should have to pay for your own medical treatment because too many obese people puts unnecessary pressure on the health system (I'm thinking of the uk here where universal healthcare is a thing).

6 RepliesObviously being obese is unhealthy. That doesn't mean you should ridicule someone because of their weight.
-
If being a fat -blam!- is healthy, then cigarettes are also healthy and I'm going to live forever.
-
1 ReplyExtreme height isn't healthy either. Those people in record books who are like 7 ft 6 and up don't live nearly as long as a normally tall person.

recently I had someone make the argument that we have different heights and skin colors so why not different weights?
The human skeleton is the same for everyone and is not designed to handle obesity.

2 RepliesIf you can accept a person at any shape or size, that's great.... but there comes a point where you need to accept the fact that you are overweight and you are at a serious health risk. There is nothing wrong with accepting yourself, there IS something wrong with thinking it's okay to be fat enough that you die below thirty from a heart attack.
-
3 RepliesI'm considered morbidly obese. I absolutely HATE the fat acceptance movement. Obesity is a disease. Diseases should never be accepted, they should be cured.
-
2 RepliesCheck out penn and tellers show "bullshit" they did one on obesity. Interesting shit!
-
2 RepliesYeah because being 600 pounds and having heart attacks at 22 is perfectly fine

4 RepliesThe main factor is realizing that fat =/= unhealthy. For example, I went to karate with a guy who was probably 6'5, probably 275ish. He also could run circles around a couple of people half his size.
