I deliver pizza part-time to make extra money, and here are a few things customers should know:
1) Prank calls will get you blacklisted.
2) The pizza guy is not a change machine. Break your $100 bills at the gas station.
3) The delivery charge is not the driver's tip.
4) If you live in a gated community, give us the gate code for -blam!-'s sake.
5) One dollar was a tip in 1985. In 2017, it is a stiff. The same applies to the coin change.
6) If your pizza is 10-15 minutes late, it's because you ordered during the dinner rush.
7) Extra toppings cost extra money. Don't order a fully-loaded pizza and then complain to me about the price.
8) Turn some lights on. If your house and porch are dark, I won't even get out of the car. Setups and robberies happen all the time, and yes, I do carry a gun.
9) Most drivers keep a list of addresses that stiffed them. Don't forget, we know where you live. Good tippers get their food first. Stiffers get their food last.
10) If you are a stiffer and you order a soda, it will be shaken up the entire way over to your house.
For the "why should I have to tip" crowd:
Pizza drivers make below minimum wage because they are expected to get tips. Our wages are taxed on the assumption that we are getting tips, and we have to claim a certain amount every night regardless of whether we actually made that amount. "Well they should pay a living wage," you say? We would love that, but you would not love the $25 pizzas, now would you? Tips keep prices low. "Get a better job," you say? I already have one, as I said before, I deliver part-time for extra money.
That's all I have for right now. Feel free to share your stories/advice.
Edit: Love how these threads always bring out a few terrible people who feel like they need to defend their stiffing ways. To those people, I say: Take your business elsewhere, we don't give a shit. We get plenty of business without you, from people who aren't assholes.
Edit 2: I'm glad to see the majority of people who have commented here are good people who understand the way things are. Sad that there appears to be at least one obtuse moron who thinks stiffing the driver sends a message to greedy owners, but hey, there will always be stupid people in the world right?

Pizza Hut paid me 8.50 an hour and 25cents for every delivery. That was back in 2007 I think or maybe 08? The problem with being a driver is the wear and tare on your car. Tires, brakes, oil changes etc. The jobs pay doesn't ever seem to factor that in. Only worked for them for 5-6 months before I did the math that working for them was almost costing me money due to my car not being new. Mind you I was only 18 at the time, but all in all I can say it was a fun and easy job compared to what I do now.

Now this is an OP that delivers
Get it?
Bought a pizza for 7, gave the delivery guy 20 bucks and told him to keep the change, because I was drunk as heck... At least I now understand why he smiled from cheek to cheek :)

Edited by GG ALLIN RIP: 3/4/2017 8:59:56 PMReally wasn't expecting to enjoy anything in Offtopic quite like this today. I always tip well. My delivery drivers, waiters, and bartenders are cool as f-ck because of it. And they remember it too. I'll even shovel the driveway all the way down to the street when I make an order when it's snowing like f-ck outside.

Edited by PuRe Messoric: 3/3/2017 7:06:40 PMusually for tips I do the "keep the change" method for whatever amount I use, unless the total is something like $18< and I use a $20, in cases like that I drop an extra Lincoln or at the very least couple of Washingtons (Lincoln= $5 and Washington= $1 for people who don't keep up to date on what president is on what bill) here's my theory, even though tips are not required in the slightest, I think that you should tip either way just to be kind, I also don't think that you should be expected to be tipped when it comes to your wage or at least taxes, a tip is a gratitude given to the worker as a job well done gift to show appreciation, the customer should not be expected to help pay the workers pay check or taxes. That being said if you show someone who stiffs good service, you prove them wrong and make them look like a jerk, if you show them bad service, you make them look validated in their actions. if you actively hurt them, you're both in the wrong, but if you make them hurt themselves, then you're in the right (I'm not saying to prioritize them, just don't actively make your service worse like shaking the soda, you should deliver to them last.)

1 ReplyMy gf worked at an Italian restaurant when she was in highschool, and sometimes if the driver was out and it was slow she would drive an order out. And she told me stories of bad tippers, like this one time the bill was $19.75 and the guy gives her a $20 and and closes the door. She got mad and takes a quorter out of her pocket and knocked on the door, then gives the guy the quorter and goes "here, obviously need this more than me" and walked away. A guy called Tino (the owner) and complained, and Tino obviously was apologetic but after words goes to my gf an says "yeahh -blam!- him" lol

4 RepliesEdited by SpamTheDamage: 3/3/2017 8:46:53 PMI'm assuming you work in the states based on how adamant you are about tips. Living in Canada working as a physio aide, I don't get tips regardless of how well I do my job. Why should I pay people extra for doing their job which they already get paid for? I only tip for exceptional service. For the record I also never order pizza, so I don't need to worry about tipping delivery drivers.

Aaaah the days of pizza delivery. Back when I did it gas was only a 1.20 ( which we bitched was high lol) and shit was cheaper. I can't imagine doing it now with all the cheapskates out there. Still one if my favorite jobs. P.S I don't even order delivery unless I have at least 6 bucks for the driver.

Thanks you for delivering my pizza a mere 15 minutes after I ordered it one night. A family night of chores, hockey and chorizo pizza was saved

Always do 15-20% on $50+. If its like a $20 order would go with $5. A question though - some like Papa John's let you tip when ordering online, do you guys prefer that to getting cash tip at the door? From my perspective it feels better as in they know they've been tipped well already and less likely to pee on the topping. Not literally but you know what I mean.

You're still getting 16% from me

This just reminds me of the time someone from home depot got fired for accepting a 2 dollar tip after loading up 100s of pavestones into a truck. So shitty that they can't accept a tip. I mean damn, loading up people's vehicles with bags of concrete, lumber etc...thats way more work than delivering a pizza. Home depot is all about smiles and customer service as well, but they pay shit and certain departments have heavy workloads. I worked their in my younger years. Seen tons of people fired for dumb shit, and absolutely used, abused, and discarded. Despite that, I had awesome co workers and friends at that time. I live right by a pizza hut. I usually just pick it up myself though. If it's a event or occasion at my place though, and we order a lot of shit, we all pitch in and tip good, offer the person a drink. Otherwise, I just get it myself. A 10 dollar pizza ends up being near 20 if you order it, pay the fee, and give a decent tip. At that rate, you could have ate something much better for 20. I mean...I hear you...the pay sucks. It is what it is though. You gotta take the bad days in with the good, or get a different job. It's a job everyone should realize what they're signing up for. A gamble at making good money off tips, or being stiffed repeatedly since it isn't mandatory to get a tip. That, along with the various risks of delivering items to strangers.

2 RepliesI remember when I was a kid we ordered almost 50 pizzas for a party, they sent them all with 1 deliverer. So we helped him get them all out of the car and tipped him 100%. Which was like $220. Looking back on it, it was a nice thing to do, but probably not my best decision. ~ Making America Great Again ~

3 RepliesI don't tip lower than $4 for anything. Unless I receive real bad service. One time I ordered a pizza, had to run to the bank right down the street in between the time. Of course there were only two people behind the counter and the 2 customers were having problems. Waited about 25 minutes and the delivery girl called my phone saying she got to my house. Left the line saying "Fvck it" drove home and felt bad for making her wait. Tipped her $15 when I got home when the pizza only cost around $11. Then her car wouldn't start and I gave her a jump. She gave me $5 back for the jump (shit I just wanted to eat my pizza at that point). Moral of the story: Fvck old people in lines.
