Spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk, obviously.
Now, we've all seen the massive amounts of Star Wars talk across the Internet. Most prevalent amongst the litany of discussion-topics are:
-Just how -blam!-ing sick Storm Trooper of Sick Spins' sick spins were.
-How Rey was a super cool character but maaaaay have edged into Mary Sue territory a bit.
-And lastly, and most relevant to the topic, how much of a jobber poor Darth Tantrum was.
But does Kylo really suck anywhere nearly as much as people think he does? Or even at all? Yes, he was immature and more than a bit of a slavering Vader fanboy. Yes, he, y'know, murdered his dad like a little -blam!-boy.
But one of the things he is criticized most for, his loss in the film's climactic lightsaber-duel, really isn't a fair jab. Why? Because Kylo had been shot in the side five minutes earlier with a gun that knocked fully grown men in armor ten feet on their ass. And like a champ, Kylo got back up and marched back out into the cold, dripping blood out of his chest-cavity, so that he could take on two armed opponents.
Kylo's fighting ability was rather severely impeded by his heavy injury, and I don't see any other past villains doing too much better than he did in his situation. Observe the way he walks-- he's stiff, confined to a slightly hunched, twisted posture. He cannot sidestep, backstep, or even advance terribly quickly in that position.
Had he not been slowed and hampered by wounds, the fight would have gone much differently.

2 RepliesGive it two more movies. Then we can fully analyze him as a character. Let's hope he doesn't talk about sand at any point either.

2 RepliesI liked the little fit he threw. It's how the dark side which centers on giving into your emotion should have always been portrayed. That being said I didn't like how inconsistent his character was. In the 1st scene shows him hold a blaster bolt mid air with very little effort and later shows him mind -blam!- secrets out of a rebel. 2 powers even darth vader sideous maul and dooku never display. Now I get that different force users have different talents but to have the same character later get his ass kicked by a storm trooper and a girl with no training is a little too in consistent for me... even if he was bleeding out kicking rey and fins collective asses shouldn't have taken too much effort.

1 ReplyHis lightsaber is still the weapon of a fuqboi knight.

8 RepliesEdited by Jphn_33: 1/1/2016 10:15:44 AMSeveral points to help defend Kylo: In addition to being heavily injured, he is also an apprentice still. He is a novice, and we can safely assume that this was his first real fight against someone else with a lightsaber. We can see that his technique has some finesse and power, but he still makes mistakes (such as when Finn was able to land a hit). Furthermore, his fighting style is purely offensive. When he is on the offense, he is winning. If you notice, his fighting is much better when his enemy is on the defensive. The fight very much turned against Kylo when Rey went on the offensive. Kylo had no defensive techniques to work with, and even then Rey had a tough time getting to him. It is good that they introduced him in this way in the first movie of the trilogy. They establish a sort of rivalry between Rey and Kylo, and there is heavy symbolism telling us that the two will meet again (The earth separating the two after the duel, as if to say it would finish another day). It is good knowing there is a human being behind the mask, a troubled young man, full of emotion. That is what the Dark Side is, but he is still lost. He's torn, between light and dark, and he wants to be dark, which is interesting to see in a character. He has not found how to control his emotions, or how to harness them. His lightsaber blade reflects his personality perfectly; full of power, but incredibly unstable, and not refined and focused. He's a very well-designed character all around, and I have high hopes for how they will advance his story.

He also took his helmet off. I lost respect for him after that. Not cool.

1 ReplyYeah guys give me a break. I've been messed up every since my dad knocked over my model death star and destroyed my vader shrine.

8 RepliesDudes a whiny bitch just like Anakin was

I think they did it on purpose. I believe they want the fans to see his maturation in the next installment. He showed moments of being more than a novice. Even injured, he should of easily handled Rey and Finn seeing as they had no idea about the force or a lightsaber.

Saw the movie again today, the first time I disliked him because I felt he was a bad sith character. To emotional. And pretty weak. Second time I noticed him getting shot which kinda made since why he lost to Rey. Still dislike like him because of the emotions but hopefully he will mature in the next one.

Idk I like the fact he's not really a full dark Jedi/sith murder machine, he's still in training and obviously conflicted. I really like the character, and I -blam!-ing adore him compared to that carrot top general -blam!-boi.
-
4 RepliesI think people hate him purely because he killed Han Solo. If that didn't happen, he wouldn't receive nearly as much hate. At least they made the most hated character of all time.
-
just once i wish my dad would respond to "I love you" with "I love you too" mom too for that matter

4 RepliesKylo is 2 tequila shots away from playing his guitar and starting an ultimate frisbee league on the new death star. I bet he wears rainbow sandals and cargo shorts under that cloak
-
13 Repliesmy primary complaint about kylo ren was that he took his mask off
-
With the lightsaber duel and the end: A) We see on Jakku Rey is good with melee weapons. It's using your knowledge to switch from staff to sword. B) With Finn, at that point he was full of blind rage. All Finn was doing was holding off Kylo, you notice he wasn't attacking. Kylo was in full rage/crazy mode, and probably wasn't remembering any training. Think of it as a sword fight, because it pretty much was.

Kylo too strong

1 ReplyDude. It was more than that. He shouldve -blam!-ing died, flown off the bridge. But no. He takes a knee and then -blam!-ing WALKS IT OFF THE SAME GUN THAT KILLED 2 GUYS IN ONE SHOT WITH A HUGE ASS EXPLOSION AND HE JUST WALKS IT TF OFF
-
2 RepliesLooks like he will be getting some of his own armor too soon
-
I got the sense he was initially toying with them, and by the point he started to take the fight seriously he was too injured to keep up.
-
2 RepliesI don't get how he managed to stop a laser with the force and held it there for a while then never did anything that amazing later on
-
3 RepliesI don't know where people got the Mary Sue shit. Yes, she's somehow as good as a pilot as Han Solo, and somehow she resisted Ren's powers, but didn't get that Sue feeling from her.
-
5 RepliesStorm trooper of sick spins>darth vader
-
6 RepliesActually the lasers are so hot they instantly cauterize the wound, so while he is at a disadvantage interns of bodily health it is not as severe as you believe.
-
11 RepliesI just don't like the actor they picked for the part
-
Tr8r you got no sick spins

2 RepliesThank you, finally someone else sees it.
