With all the news coming out lately about Bungie, their layoffs and whatnot, the information about Payback has been some of the most disappointing. Not that it was cancelled, far from that. The fact that they were going in such an absurd direction away from the core of what makes Destiny, Destiny.
I mean, I know there's plenty of people who like MMOs mainly, or grinder loot games like Warframe, but I know I'm not alone in finishing Destiny so special simply because of it being a great feeling, FPS first, with additional MMO, loot grind elements added on to it. You can see it in some of the streamers asking their communities where they plan on going next, a lot of comments support the other game types, but there's as many people saying they are giving up because right now there's no direct competition, there's no other FPS that even begins to follow similar elements like Destiny.
It's disheartening to see that they were focusing so much on everything BUT what Destiny is, whether that be Marathon (lol) or Payback, or whatever that gummybear nonsense is supposed to be. Bungie has been making FPS games for so long, it's almost like that's what their fans prefer! Sure finding new markets, or creative burnout are a thing but, come on... I'm really sad to see the direction we're headed towards, but don't want to jump the gun before we actually hear more from Bungie themselves, if we ever really do hear more... But at least the third person, hero shooter, is dead.
Anyone else feel the same?

For me, I actually enjoy 3rd person POV games more the First person. Like you said, I have stuck with D2, since there hasn’t been anything like it. I will play it a lot, until I find a really good 3rd person game to play. The 3rd person hero game, by one article I read, sounded to be going in the direction, D2 is currently in. More puzzles and a lot more co-op. I hate puzzles and timers in games. It’s something that makes them not fun for me. Since about Witch Queen onwards, D2 has been adding in more, puzzles, timers, and mechanics, even into base store gameplay. TFS seeing a lot more of all of that. Overall it’s not something I want to do. If a new 3rd person shooter came out, fromBungie/Sony, but included a lot of those elements, I would likely pass.

3 RepliesEdited by Skill Privilege: 8/3/2024 2:38:17 PMI think it might have taken off if done extremely well, just for a different type of player. There's a market for 3rd-person action, just look at Div 2, Warframe, First Descendant, Spiderman, God of War, Elden Ring. It wasn't intended to replace D2.

4 RepliesI think marathon, this new pvp game will not be as good as they think. I certainly won't be playing it

As soon as I saw they were gonna take inspiration from Genshin while "shaking up the formula" I knew we weren't missing anything when it got cancelled. I don't think there's been a single game that has tried to "shake up the genshin formula" that hasn't managed to avoid being worse in basically every single way. And Genshin has the worst Gacha system I've ever had the displeasure of briefly dealing. I'm sure bungie would've made a worse one though

Edited by Apollo_XIX: 8/5/2024 6:53:51 PMI dunno, I could be down for Warframe adjacent gameplay in the Destiny universe Like, more action more spectacle, let the Space Magic really flow Established characters, unique movesets I think there was fun to be had there, not that it'll ever see the light of day now lol

Payback could have been interesting, and maybe a pve exclusive game. But I'd be a bit dubious about jumping on board another live service game. In any case there's little point discussing what that could have been. However, no one is really mentioning this, but the line in the post said bungie are shelving the idea in favour of Destiny (and marathon).... but note that doesn't say Destiny 2!! It's also been said that payback is not Destiny 3, but the next Destiny. In my mind that says it would have been a brand new game, in much the same way that Destiny may have been described as the next halo. Focusing on Destiny but stopping larger content drops does sound contradictory... you can't argue that the game will be left to rot, so what are the options? I actually hope efforts can be taken to bug fix, and to unvault previous content. If there is a means to bring in d1 (as a lot is already here), then that would be a bonus.

I dunno. What I read mentioned something about taking elements from Warframe and Genshin Impact ? The latter is massively profitable.

10 RepliesThe only thing this game ever really had going for it was the Halo gunplay and the name behind it. The quality of the work being put into this game barely existed. After Forsaken is when the game took a huge turn for the worst because this business was preparing for Activision to leave and the only thing this business has done with this game since then was sell gimmicks and lies to get most of you to throw money at the screen and it worked. The funny thing is money you guys threw at them was barely being put into this game so they could spend it it on more broken projects. The only effort put into "The Final Desaster" was the campaign, just enough to sell this DLC and say "See" We put some effort into it, but we won't tell you we left the rest of the game as screwed as it has been for many years.

Sounded like a gacha game

If I was in charge, I’d have poured resources into giving this incredible community of dedicated Guardians what they most wanted. On sticky issues, I’d have held a community referendum…and followed through based on the outcome. I would have promoted a ‘Fast Track’ option - just like the ski resorts and theme parks…and WarFrame do…so players can play the way they want to, ie, grinder to whaler - and steps in between. I would upgrade the steam engine to a warp drive - and future-proofed it re upgrade options down the line. I would introduce regional dedicated servers - even 1x region at a time, funds permitting. I would ditch potato-2-potato asap, if not sooner. I would create a proper PvP League and make it available as a standalone Subscription Service option - for those that want it and would support it. Furthermore, I would invite top tier PvP gamers to advise on creating tournaments and events which would be streamed, if different types, where these top players and top teams would duke it out - for epic awards and loot. I would also let them have fun…and hold ‘open class’ events, eg, for 0.5% and under events, for 0.5% to 1% events, etc… I would build a Wall of Fame - where the winning teams / individual players have their names indelibly inscribed. I would ruthlessly weed out cheaters. I would ban paid carries in a heartbeat. I would, however, license certain proven teams / players, eg, those with their names on The Wall of Fame, to offer carries - for a fixed fee, which would be divided into 4x pieces: 1) 30% to the service provider…2) 30% to a Charity of Choice…3) 30% to BHQ to be used to reinvest into the game…4) 10% admin fee (to BHQ). I would create a Community Council via zoom, of a goodly mix of Guardians from across the Destiny universe, as an in house advisory panel. I would ensure my Devs played the game privately as any other Guardian would; and I’d encourage a selection of Devs to form teams for both PvP and PvE stuff - to engage as players with the community at large - especially Sherpa crews who would help New Lights and Older Lights with endgame content. I would seek collaborations with other gaming studios and creators, to explore the potential for joint projects that benefit all parties concerned. I would treasure my customers and look after them…because, I know they will look after Destiny and therefore, me! And most importantly of all - I would listen to my customers, and respond, accordingly! Ease Springs! 🫡

1 Reply3rd person? The only reason they decided to put that ill conceived idea on a white board was selling skins. I play D2 for the FPS aspect. Gun play is the very best in gaming.

1 ReplyTPS and FPS offer different enough benefits to the point where I feel it's not right to say one or the other would flop because of past game design. Third person is better overall for puzzle design because it is easier for players to look at the larger picture. It is also better in terms of animation design and combat as the player can actually use noticably different fighting styles. First person is better for certain narrative elements such as horror games or to make the player feel like the main character. It also provides benefits with shooting as aiming can be more accurate (though some TPS go to first person when aiming, mostly with snipers). It also makes the game more picturesque.

Absolutely payback simply shows how lost they are

1 ReplyI think that what makes Destiny so special is that it’s a “successful” combination of genres like FPS, MMO, and Looter Shooter. Very few games have done similar things, with the only one coming to mind being Borderlands, which is a Looter Shooter first. Mind you, it also combines PvP and PvE successfully too, bringing the speed, snappy feeling of an FPS combined with the variety of builds, abilities and powers of an MMO, creating one of the most unique PvP experiences ever. A Thirdperson game would remove much of that uniqueness, despite how interesting it sounds.
-
3 RepliesI'm not the biggest fan of third person games, and the fact that it was going to be a puzzle based game makes me immediately uninterested in Payback. I love blowing up aliens, not getting annoyed from solving. 3 trillion puzzles
-
12 RepliesIt would've had s tier shooting mechanics, and addictive rng loop 🤔

Haha, "Payback" doesn't sound that accommodating. I appreciate it, if one wants to be more broad standing. But before you do something new, you first make that true what you started.

I think it's great that there are game devs out there that want to branch out from what the typical norm is. It's just too bad that it had to be Bungie. The Limp Bizkit of the gaming industry.

Edited by A_mo: 8/3/2024 6:48:30 PMI think its a good thing they were trying to branch out into having several games so some of us might not have to be saddled with a less than ideal experience so that other people could have fun because of that reason. And then everyone is supposed to ignore it and keep their heads in the clouds. Or give increasingly moronic reasons for why it should have to happen or equally dumb reasons for why the company should think its sustainable to have people steeeeeeealing other peoples' gameplay. Just in the last 6 months, and despite the fact that my stats are trash, me not wanting my gameplay stolen has resulted in me being called a narcissist, schizophrenic, autistic, a bully, a hoarder, condescending and many more things. So please excuse me if I do take a bit of satisfaction from watching you people cry more. You ignored what you shouldn't have and now you're whining like a bunch of spoiled brats that were spoiled because you were spoiled. Eff the spoiled brats, I seriously do not care. If I was Pete I'd buy 5 cars.

Edited by A_mo: 8/3/2024 3:35:38 PMI think its kind of strange that certain people that play Destiny expected for the way they act to be endlessly catered to by the game. And I don't particularly care if the people that were constantly pretending that they could diagnose people with mental health issues because they play a lot, or that thought their irl jobs were a good enough reason for other people to end up with constant trashgarbage gameplay end up leaving. I seriously don't care. I have something like 6700 hours in the game and its surprising how much I don't feel like my happiness is tied to having the game feel like nanny as much as some of these other people do. Oh darn, your nanny is taking some time off and looking for another job.
