It's only f2p because the money from me and other players have covered all the cost for it already, so it makes more sense for them to try to lure in the players that aren't willing to buy the game just to try it with the content that's already paid for. The only time the f2p argument works is if the company has to recover the development costs, however in D2 all the development costs were paid for by the paying players, and most new content is locked behind expansion and season pass which cost just as much now as they did back before D2 went "f2p".
