A Thought On Ghosts

Ghosts are fragile things, evident in the Iron Lord grimiore. The way that Felwinter destroys the ghost of the Warlord Citan is easy. Just a single shotgun blast. Now let me bring something up. In playlists that allow revival between teammates, such as Salvage or Trials of Osiris, your ghost is protected by force field like shields. Have you noticed them? They're blue. In the Perun grimiore, they continuously stand in front of each other's ghosts to avoid being killed. With those force fields, you don't need that. But, look at Mayhem playlists, or clash, or even control. When you die, your ghost has no force field around it. Why is that? If it is true "chaos" like shaxx says, then why does your ghost have no protection? I would like you guys to think about this. Maybe there are unspoken rules in the crucible. We don't know. It's our job as the community to theorize the lore. Think about it some. Thank you.
Made with the support of The Ashen Conflux.
• For the fragility of ghosts, I wouldn't consider them anywhere near fragile. The shotgun Lord Felwinter used was likely akin to the one that now bears his name, and any guardians who stepped into the crucible before Oryx's arrival can attest to it's power. At point blank, no one, guardian or otherwise, could survive that unscathed. For why ghosts aren't destroyed in the crucible, I don't think they'd accompany their guardians into the crucible at all. I believe that the ghosts are in a designated zone outside the play area and you're revived there, then whatever systems the crucible employ to secure a zone for play transmat you back to where you're supposed to be, and the "ghost" that is left where you physically died is just an artificial death marker with certain mechanics built into the crucible system. Because even with the rule of never shooting another guardian's ghost, what about if a rocket goes off on top of it? The Ghost would likely be destroyed and then you'd have an actually dead guardian

      • Not a shield, just the glow of your Ghost's energy They don't hav shields, in Crucible it's assumed that a Guardian would not shoot a Ghost, and they are very small targets so it's apparently considered fine for them to mark their Guardian's body for their teammates

        • The revive ability gives your ghost a visual action while waiting to be revived-like its waiting for someone to get you because it cannot do it itself, in mayhem, clash, rift, supremacy, control-no one revives you so your ghost has no action

        • Because of the respawn capability of the source value and it's applied capability to extend to further host values selected it seems likely shooting a ghost makes a temporary problem. Also I think we have more powerful ghosts than in lore due to shards returned to the Traveler.

        • I'm not so sure it's a force field. Pretty sure it's just its light showing in preparation for the revive.

          • In raids there is a white forcefield around your ghost as well and when you wipe they dissappear

          • I believe that Ghost is just projected to show where you can be revived. The blue sphere indicates you can be revived

            • It's an indication that the Crucible is pretty much insane. Given how much destructive power a Guardian can channel, it'd be the easiest thing in the world for a "little light" to get accidentally blown out. It wastes time and ammo that could be used to fight the Darkness. It's like fighting the Cabal on the Dreadnought... a game mechanic to give players a larger variety of activities/adversaries, but that doesn't make sense when you really think about it.

            • Perhaps when in the Crucible, ghosts know that there is no true imminent danger; as Guardians are killed and will be revived again; in the sport of combating friendlies. Therefore, no shield is needed, as the ghost does not perceive fighting in Crucible as a true danger. However, when combating our enemies across the stars, the ghosts have the realization of throwing a shield up to protect themselves, knowing full well a revive might not be possible. Not to mention, these enemies are really out to kill us; for good. That's my take on it at least.

              • Killing another Guardian's Ghost is more of an actual rule for Guardians than an 'unspoken' one. Other rules would be things like no summoning sparrows on maps with the exception of the three or four large maps and using ammo synthesizers. Ghosts have thier own rules to abide by in the Crucible as well, especially in the more intimate game modes. Don't worry about trying to explain mundane game mechanics through lore, otherwise you'll find yourself trying to explain why Guardians need a visual notification for when they can use a super instead of..you know just feeling that it's ready.

If you pay attention to the grimoire ghosts slowly learned better tricks to protect themselves phasing in and out of reality etc. also that isn't a force field that's the way they revive The ghost didn't expect felwinter to attack it

                  • I never thought of that as a force field, just as a light or kinetic bond keeping the parts of the Ghost from falling apart.

                  • Mayhem Clash DOES say in the team display (Alpha/Bravo Team) "The Crucible is not viable for any injuries sustained herein." Could that mean anything?

                    • Maybe it's because the ghosts are using all of their power to boost the guardians skills recovery. They are juicing them up and having to take it away from their shield.

Because lord Shaxx is actually dredgen yor in disguise and wants gaurdians to die accidentally. Especially hunters

                      • Guardians do not perma-kill other guardians. Citan was a warlord. Imbued with power by the traveler, but they had not taken a mantle of "guardian" or protector. The Iron Lords gathered together and decided after taking down the warlords that they should become protectors, Guardians of the city. They all agreed and that's when the true spirit of what we are today was born.

                        • The blue field is the light energy of the Ghost meaning that the Guardian is able to be revived/respawn, like we see in the opening cutscene of the game. If the shell is closed, the Guardian is unable to be revived at all.
