Destiny and sexism (and what us guys can do about it)
I've been gaming for a very long time. Over the years, I've noticed two very important things.
1) More and more women are playing video games
2) Gaming is still very much male-centric, and the attitude and actions of male players reinforce this.
Listen, I'm not gonna accuse all of you male Destiny players of being "sexist, misogynistic pigs". I don't believe people are intentionally like that. But you have to realize that you may unconsciously hold some, dare I say, sexist attitudes that turn away many females from playing games.
Do you only play as male Guardian? If you don't, great! You're making Destiny, and gaming in general, a welcome, safe, and inclusive space for women. However, if you do only play as male Guardians, then that can be indicative of some very negative attitudes, attitudes from when gaming was (and still is, to an extent) a boy's club. That needs to change.
So, I encourage every man out there to make a female Guardian, to show solidarity with all of the gals playing Destiny. If you don't have an empty character slot, delete one of your male characters and start anew!

4 RepliesI'm sexist because my Guardians are guys? No, my guardians are dudes because, for me at least, I like to immerse myself in the game as much as possible. Sense I identify as male it makes more sense for me to create a male character. If you create characters of the opposite gender that's cool. I'm not by any means against girl gamers either, I game with my sister in-law all the time. You sir/mam/half wit are reading deeply into something in which there is nothing to be read. Thank you for your suggestion, laced with an underlying implication/guilt trip that if a man chooses not to have a female character on destiny he might be sexist. I sense some sexism issues of your own, since you feel it necessary to point these things out. You have every right to have said what you did, but I won't allow anyone to even slightly make me feel like I did something wrong when I made my two male characters. Anyone who would be so downright silly to take offense over something like this, especially to the point of not playing the game, has their own issues to deal with. Honestly, I very well could have made my next character female. You have completely destroyed whatever desire I may have had to do so. Well done.

I was playing 2 days ago when I joined a friends Xbox live party, she had a full group of people in there and they were all female. Shortly after I spoke, 2 of them simultaneously roared out, we don't want any "dudes", followed by a "YEAH!" from another, then I was booted. I am not a squeaker, nor am I offensive to talk too. First time being in a full party of girls(minus myself) and I was booted for being male within 10 seconds of speaking. All I said was "Hey 'friends gamertag', how's your day going?" My opinion of female gamers being singled out by males for sexism(and saying they aren't sexist themselves) has changed as females do the exact same thing. Group mentality takes control regardless of gender.

Why does the female armamentarium look like a bikini with grenades where the breasts should be? Why do the female characters cock their hip when standing in the options screen? Why do human females dance suggestively when dancing next to other characters? Why are female characters just skins on the male character? BUNGIE should treat women with respect too.

Instead, FEMALES need to stop advertising themselves as "Girl Gamer looking for a clan" or "Female gamer wanting to lose her (raid) virginity". It just makes females look even more desperate, and brings down their name. Instead, just join a group like any other gamer, and the people who are in your group will know you are a female when they know, no need for special attention. I personally couldnt care less about gender, and trust me not everyone is thirsty 50 yr olds wanting pussy, some of us can actually game with girls and nothing more.. (Unless its a 12 yr old then its different and they get booted lol)
