Just wondering why Destiny is an "online only" game?...
I mean I understand PvP and Raids... but what about the rest?
The Tower - Already full of NPC characters... do I really need online only to dance with others? You can't even chat or trade. I rarely see any interaction anyway.
Explore - I understand being able to see other guardians... but why? to dance again? Public events happen but they could easily be done solo as well. Also, can't talk or trade either...
Story - I did the entire story solo... soooo why do I have to be online?
I understand being "kicked" out of a PvP match... it happens... but being kicked from a story mission or strike while playing solo is ridiculous and unnecessary. Playing online is a great "option"... but why is it necessary in Destiny?
Seriously looking for a logical answer to this... other than dancing.
EDIT: I ask this for two reasons.
#1 - My friend is in the military overseas and cannot play due to online restrictions... when he asked why he couldn't play the story, I had no flipping clue.
#2 - When the servers go down, why not play the campaign like we did in halo 3, reach, halo 4?... I don't even wanna think about when they shut the servers down for good, I can still play the halo 3 campaign right now... 10 years from now, all Destiny 1 will be is a box... why?

5 RepliesI'm not a Bungie Employee, but if I were to theorize as to why Destiny requires an internet connection I'd first point in the direction of Halo Reach. Remember how if you played offline your progression with regards to credits and such was effectively lost the next time you connected online in an attempt to prevent modding / cheating? I imagine the same would apply for Destiny, it prevents people from going "Oh yeah, I totally found 100 Legendary Engrams while patrolling on Earth in the last five minutes offline and now I want to cash them in and roll up into PvP online and wreck some face." The same "You lose your progress when you log in" mechanism that was featured in Reach really wouldn't work nearly as well in Destiny, and since Destiny relies on patches, other players, and all that jazz to create a persistent world it's no surprise that it's online only. I only wish the networking was more consistent, that's got to be one of the bigger thorns in the side of this game =\

I agree.....its stupid to be online only....Bungie would have more sells if it wasn't.....and they should allow you too have a online only character save and a offline only character save
-
I TOTALLY AGREE! Games that are online only should be boycotted!!!!!!
-
I mean, why couldn't they just do like GTA, and make online an option, and not push one person down to one option. People like options. It's America.

1 ReplyYour progression and character data is being saved and updated on Bungie's servers continuously. Seriously, look at your kill count for Dregs for example in your grimoire stats. Then go out and shoot one and refresh the grimoire page. That kill registers almost instantly. Everything you do is continuously updated and saved in the background, you never have to manually save or even see a "Saving" icon. That's probably one of the bigger reasons it's always online, besides the complicated back-end matchmaking that goes on behind the scenes whenever you move to different areas and see other players come and go.

3 RepliesEdited by Level1 on Hard: 10/14/2014 4:21:37 PMThere are other games that tried to enforce the always online and it has always been primarily for DRM. You see it much more with some PC games but more and more console games will start doing it, especially since Microsoft backed out of the system's always online requirement. DRM is the only reason solo modes are forced into always online. The shared world experience doesn't explain the force to be always online. DRM is the only reason it has ever been done that way.

4 RepliesI suspect that your friend is mythical and it's just availed attempt to troll a bit, if your friend is real then I suggest they look up what an MMO is and if you had even spent time playing the game you would know that you need others to join in from time to time, so in short, troll

3 RepliesDancing is everything. It needs to be online so you have someone to dance with. "I wanna dance with somebodyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

25 RepliesI was stationed in the army overseas until just recently and your friend is full of shit. All of us are given internet in the barracks
-
2 RepliesI know right?? I'm gonna miss this game on deployment... I'd really at least an offline form of crucible where you build a match and do whatever with whoever has a controller!
-
Because Bungie wanted to be able to track every player and what and when they play. They also wanted control over the game, as in PvP people complaing some weapon is to powerful. Now Bungie can answer their need by nerfing weapons.

1 ReplyBecause duping, simple as that.
-
a lot of your information is saved server side not client side. only reason.
-
So you can't cheat, it's that simple.

3 RepliesEdited by Myndbl0wn_OG: 10/14/2014 3:22:02 PMHave you seen me dance?! My hips don't lie sir. People must see me dance! ... Yeah it's part of the MMO thing. It's like piss or get off the pot. Give us more options to interact if we're going to be forced to share a game space. And give me the option to put ammo synth pact to my D pad when not in the tower. Please.

A lot of games are online only now days because many of them require an account and it'd also to verify your content. I'm assuming that means the integrity of your game files is okay and to make sure the items you have in game weren't hacked or modded to be OP.
in b4 but -insert gun name is already op
1 ReplySo here is the answer everyone has been waiting for. Why is Destiny online only? Well thats largely due to fact it is what allows the creators programmers and developers a chance to observe what is going on such as bugs glitches so on and so forth. Sure there was a beta with not even half as many players as there are now in the life version. So now data streamed is different the environment reacts differently and the list is a mile long. Actually I am just goofing but it is mostly true. Why is online? Creators choice. Why do motorcycles have two wheels because the original builder decided thats how it will be. Some times in life things happen for no other reason than just because. If you want a mix version why not email bungie and make a recommendation or suggestion and maybe destiny 2 will have an offline version that requires a ps plus membership to download extras and kee certain items out of offline content such as. If you make a pvp character offline you can only use it offline. If you find a thousand ascendant shards they are only good for offline. So if you want to play online you have to make a character for online use only have it locked for offline play.

2 RepliesThey know how much you like playing that same Septiks Prime Strike 100 times to complete the same bounty every day, but with "Always Online," they can boot you as you're nearing the boss, so you can enjoy it even more! Bungie does it for you~
-
Its original gameplay would have made the pve aspect perfect for online play, but bungie choked on activisions desires and utterly failed theirfans. Now all this game is is a COD/MW ripoff for activision's personal deepening of pockets. Now, the raid, weekly, nightfall, and pve are only needed for online. Let's face it, all pvp is a bunch of whiny cod babies wanting it their way so pve gets ruined just for pvp.

I am guessing some of the data for environments and stuff is pretty much only accessible online, so they could fit more stuff on the disc and not be restricted with content.

10 RepliesBecause it was a design choice they picked and it is a good design so why kill it?
